Very good information!
Thanks so much for this video. Could you please tell me how many rhizomes should I plant together?
It depends on the look you are going for. If you want them in mass you will need several per square foot.
Is miracle grow garden soil consider OK to improve my clay like soil for my irises. If not. what should I use. I've been told that I never let nitrogen levels on fertilizers be more than 4. What do you believe. Thank you for any info
It should definitely help. Anything organic will help. Not USDA organic but decomposing material if that makes sense?
Do you remove the spent flower stalks as soon as the flowers are done, then cut back the leaves later (when they get half brown)?
You can do it either way. It is not going to hurt the plant to go ahead and dead head the flowers as long as you are not trying to collect seed.
The tips of the leaves are turning yellow. Its the first of July here in southern south dakota. Also is it too late to fertilize? This is my first time growing iris. They were given to me last fall and I looked up how to plant them but other than that I dont know very much about them. Also I noticed the ground around them breaking up and I was told its from moles in the yard. Will they destroy my iris? And if so how do I get rid of them? Can i get rid of the moles humanely?
There is such a thing as mole traps where I believe you can relocate them and it doesn't kill them. Moles eat worms, grubs, etc so they will not directly damage your irsh but will disturb the root zone. Being as far north as you are you can probably still fertilize and it be of benefit for the plant.
I was recently reading to fertilize again in august. I am in zone 6. Do you recommend. When is a good time to divide.

It's not a bad idea if you are not using a slow release prill
What do I do to keep my iris from falling over? They always make huge flowers, but then fall over when they fill with water the first time it rains.

How much water and when to water iris
I only water mine if we are in a drought. They are very drought tolerant.
