Since some commentators believe that the marimba is an African instrument, I would like to clear things up here. The marimba or xylophone originated in South East Asia. Through the Mohammedan slave trade, the Arabs enslaved the blacks for 1300 years and traded with black chiefs who sold their own people, as well as through the Islamisation of some black countries, the xylophone came to Africa. The marimba is therefore not an African invention but merely a copy of an Asian invention. Since the natives of Central and South America are the descendants of the people of Asian descent who came to America via the Bering Strait and the xylophone has its origins in Southeast Asia, the national instrument of the American countries is actually the instrument of the natives there and not an instrument of African origin as some claim.
