The Brilliance Behind the Names in Romeo and Juliet
In one of the most iconic scenes in all of theatre, Juliet leans upon the railing of her balcony and asks:
“What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet…”
Of course, Juliet is referring to Romeo, the young man she just met (and kissed) at her family’s party.
To Juliet, Romeo seems perfect, but his name (i.e. that he’s a Montague and the son of her family’s hated enemy) makes their love star-crossed: fated to fail.
But isn’t Juliet's botanical claim correct? No matter what you call it, a rose still smells like a rose.
That might be true in reality, but this is poetry, and in poetry, names are everything.

Why Are There So Many Adaptations of A Christmas Carol?

With close to 400 filmed adaptations and countless stage performances, A Christmas Carol is one of the most adapted works of all time. And so it should be no surprise that many of these versions draw harsh criticism from viewers and prospective viewers. But many of these adaptations miss key elements from the original novella. By examining the life and influence of Charles Dickens, we'll explor...

The Forgotten Character in Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher"

Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” is an archetype for the horror genre. So, much has been said about Rodrick, his sister Madeline, and the house they both represent and dwell within. But the third character, Rodrick’s childhood friend, the nameless narrator of this dark and haunting tale, has been criminally overlooked. In this video we'll summarize and analyze the characters, ...

The Modern Misreading of Romeo and Juliet
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 9 měsíci
The characters in Romeo and Juliet constantly talk about death. And modern readers usually pick up on how this talk of death is wielded as a threat, foreshadows the end of the play, and allows younger teenagers to be overdramatic. What modern readers usually don't pick up on is how, in Shakespeare's time, "death" and words like it were euphemisms for... dirty talk. Get digital resources, physic...

Hello from India. I'm thinking of doing a PhD on Kazuo Ishiguro, and all your videos have helped me a lot in preparing a research proposal. Really appreciate your videos. 👍🏽
I'm so glad they've been helpful! Best of luck with your studies!
You are wrong about the convent . Convents were catholic girls schools where the TEACHERS were nuns . My mother went to one and …… she was not a nun .
Thank you for the "video series". I found the videos very helpful and detailed.
Can you please tell me what book i can find this in? Maybe the original book? Thank you in advance.
Reading chapter by chapter and coming back to this after every one. Thank you for your help.
Thank you so much! Enjoy the novel!
Thanks
Interesting concluding thoughts. Thanks.
One of Breaking Band’s best episodes
You,are speaking very faaast😮😢
I'm sorry. This was before I learned how to edit, so everything had to be in one take. This was probably my 10th take that night. Thank you for checking out the video though!
@@OxfordCommaEducation tankyou so much🥰🍀
Great thank you so much. Hopefully, you can film another video where you can full deep.dive into the poem. ❤
All of these are extremely helpful. Thank you.
Thank you very much for the effort.
It's pronounced "lin e a tion" not "line ation" fyi
Thank you very much for analyzing these!
I also wonder if the 'passing of ships in the ocean of life' also may mean having boundaries, knowing when to connect and give each other space and reconnect again. I think this is the key to a healthy relationship when friends and families know the boundaries.
I think that's an excellent reading of the text.
Thank you
Did "appear" rhyme with "despair" and "bare" in Shelley's time?
its sad and beautiful at the same time
My favorite word in the whole poem is "things." So dismissive of the sculpture's past grandeur.
*those passions
thank you!!
My son sent this to me on father's day .... Not ... On my death days so I agree with the early challenge to live well and fight as a life style!
One of my favorites! 💝
I just came from your old series on "Heart of Darkness" and it's great to see how far your videos have come!
Thank you so much!
I just can't seem to understand the creative wit behind this one....🤔
Haha! It was my postmodern phase.
Thank you , I am a painter looking for something I am not quite sure what. This explains something , now once I add it to something else , I might see the forest if I can get all these trees out of my line of vision.
I hope you find what you're looking for. Thanks for taking a detour here!
Absoluetly love your voice and the way you explain everything. Please, make more videossss
Thank you so much! I plan on continuing the series in the fall.
I think The book refers to the Bible , the man refers to Jesus. Only Jesus loves a devout soul.
since 2006 'til now 2024,still can't forget this poem!...love it very much!...
It's been the best analysis I've seen, thanks for helping me for my IB diploma.
I'm so glad it was useful to you!
i am doing an English lit course without a tutor and there isn't much study material out there. Couldn't do it without you. Thank you so much. It's also interesting to hear an American's opinion on British life. x
Thank you so much for saying this, and best of luck on your studies!
This is my favorite chapter of the novel. It is so articulately and uniquely written and invokes such nostalgia for me.
I kind of understand romanticism a bit better now thanks to this video. Appreciated!
I'm 44 years old and live in China. I do envy the students in other countries that they are assigned to read this book in high school.I listened most of your clips 2 or 3 times and they really help me to get deeper into the whole novel. You did sth so worthful, thank you so much.
Thank you so much for this wonderful comment!
Also in the Movie, `Dangerous Minds`. the Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan compaison

Shakespeare advice, David Tennant and Dark souls this video is the best thing ever and made for me
Good video!
Thanks!
I’m taking the ap lit test tomorrow and I started this playlist to prepare for my prose essay. Not only did these videos help remind me of the important moments of this book, I also was reminded of some of the heartbreaking themes that made this my favorite book that my class read. Great job on these videos!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. Best of luck on your test!
I was told that poems aren't riddles. What gives? Sincere question
I think you were told right. There is a difference between the two. But, poems use concentrated language, so it's up to the reader to dilute that language through repeated readings, examination of imagery, and other discourse with the poem.
Thank you for your explanation
Getting better
Not for me just rubbish
There’s nothing wrong with imagining his own father. I can’t help but think of mine when I read this. It may have been easy to see what was coming and he was briefly living it.
Thank you sir for your wonderful cultural literary channel. Actually all of us know about tragic story of Romeo and Juliet two Italian youth from feuding families. As I read right now it’s fictional story based on guidelines, but another poet masaccio saleritano claims that story all but death scene happened in his own town of seina. Balcony scene is famous scene reveal their mutual love and Romeo leaves promising to arrange secret marriage. In this scene Juliet must to herself and unaware that Romeo in her garden, asks Romeo must be Romeo montague and therefore enemy to her family. She says that is he would refuse enemy to her family. She says that if he would refuse his montgue name , she would give herself to him or if he would simply swear that he loved her , she would refuse her capulet name .
That's an excellent summation of that scene. The origin of the play's plot is fascinating and could be its own video.
Is there any way to get captions for this video?
Other than the CZcams generated ones, I'm not sure. I used to go in and manually upload subtitles for all my videos, but they phased out that feature...
@@OxfordCommaEducation This video doesn't have the CZcams generated ones for some reason. Thank you though!
It should also be noted that in 1897, "Waited for the light" often meant just that, waiting for sunlight. Electricity was something not widely available to the public cheaply enough just yet, and even kerosene lamps cost some money.
That is an excellent point. Thanks!
Thanks for this
In the yahoo and Google group days I in a group of haiku enthusiasts and they did not care about syllable, and instead focussed on seasonality and brevity and surprise. To stop unnecessary debates they reverted to an older word hokku for the art form :).
Is it because it is so simple that no one has commented on the fact that the poem on the page looks like a wheelbarrow with 'upon, 'barrow 'water and 'chichens' being the wheel?
