  • With close to 400 filmed adaptations and countless stage performances, A Christmas Carol is one of the most adapted works of all time. And so it should be no surprise that many of these versions draw harsh criticism from viewers and prospective viewers.
But many of these adaptations miss key elements from the original novella. By examining the life and influence of Charles Dickens, we'll explore why this particular Christmas story is so frequently adapted, and why people clamoring against changes to the traditional approach are missing the point.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that I didn't make that clear. They once had a woman play Scrooge, and this year, they had neurodivergent actors in some of the roles.

@@OxfordCommaEducation I wonder if it makes a difference if it's not casting changes to Dickens' Christmas Carol but a retelling ala Bill Murray's Scrooged. I could swear there was a movie/TV special about a rich businesswoman who undergoes a similar experience; it didn't get a whole lot of attention either positive or negative, but this was back before social media. But I don't recall George Will or Cal Thomas or other conservative pundits hollering in the newspapers about how showing a miserly person becoming more charitable is an attack on fundamental Western values because it was a woman rather than a man. As long as the depiction keeps it individualistic and doesn't try to point out systemic flaws, at least.
And WTF was the objection to neurodivergent actors? Do the objectors think that ND folks shouldn't be allowed certain professions? Let them boycott David Byrne if they want but let the rest of us enjoy the fruits of each other's different perceptions.

I am actually quite frustrated knowing there exist people who don't know A Christmas Carol isn't based on a book. You'd think it'd be one of those stories where most people are AWARE it was a novella first!

I don't judge anyone for what they haven't read... unless they start yelling their opinions on what the story should be.
