  • Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” is an archetype for the horror genre. So, much has been said about Rodrick, his sister Madeline, and the house they both represent and dwell within. But the third character, Rodrick’s childhood friend, the nameless narrator of this dark and haunting tale, has been criminally overlooked.
In this video we'll summarize and analyze the characters, plot, and themes of Poe's more famous short story. We'll also talk about how we, and Poe, talk about madness. Finally, we'll bring look some of the most exciting young scholars in the field of madness and ghost literature.

Wow, I'll send my students this way. One of my courses looks at the correlation between bipolar disorder and creativity, and "The Fall of the House of Usher" is an optional reading. (Characterization of Roderick.) Students final paper is about someone whose work is canonical and *potentially* had bipolar disorder, and some students write about Poe. They will really enjoy your video, especially the idea of art as a sort of antagonist. (Earlier assignment "what is art?*) Thanks for this. I enjoyed it.

You should read 'the meaning of madness' by Neel Burton, i have almost finished the book myself and it is incredible. In his section on bipolar it focuses on the link between creativity and madness, especially in bipolar. If that correlation interests you i 100% recommend that book!
