  • In one of the most iconic scenes in all of theatre, Juliet leans upon the railing of her balcony and asks:
“What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet…”
Of course, Juliet is referring to Romeo, the young man she just met (and kissed) at her family’s party.
To Juliet, Romeo seems perfect, but his name (i.e. that he’s a Montague and the son of her family’s hated enemy) makes their love star-crossed: fated to fail.
But isn’t Juliet's botanical claim correct? No matter what you call it, a rose still smells like a rose.
That might be true in reality, but this is poetry, and in poetry, names are everything.

Thank you sir for your wonderful cultural literary channel. Actually all of us know about tragic story of Romeo and Juliet two Italian youth from feuding families. As I read right now it’s fictional story based on guidelines, but another poet masaccio saleritano claims that story all but death scene happened in his own town of seina. Balcony scene is famous scene reveal their mutual love and Romeo leaves promising to arrange secret marriage. In this scene Juliet must to herself and unaware that Romeo in her garden, asks Romeo must be Romeo montague and therefore enemy to her family. She says that is he would refuse enemy to her family. She says that if he would refuse his montgue name , she would give herself to him or if he would simply swear that he loved her , she would refuse her capulet name .

That's an excellent summation of that scene. The origin of the play's plot is fascinating and could be its own video.
