The 2021 NFL season kicked off the Brand New Lions era in Detroit thanks to a new direction front office, a gm and head coach shared philosophy, and drafting the right players to fit into the new culture. Amon-Ra St. Brown has been groomed for greatness but for one reason or another overlooked and underappreciated...until now!
This video will review the history on the Sun God, discuss the impact he has had with the Lions so far, and provide an outlook on 2024 and beyond.

The Detroit Lions were in desperate need of a change coming off of 3 more failed seasons during the Quinntricia era. In 2021 the organization put a group together that brought in both GM Brad Holmes and the man on the thumbnail. Today's video will give my Top 10 Dan Campbell Quotes since joining the Detroit Lions. While doing so, we will discuss the impact he has had on the organization so far ...

The Detroit Lions opted to go for it twice in the second half rather than kick field goals in the 2023 NFC Championship Game. That could be Dan Campbell's aggressive style...but I argue that it also has to do with the Lions not having their guy at kicker. In this video I will break down the Lions current kicking situation, spotlight the two players competing for the job, give my outlook on 2024...

I just want to double up on this compliment.... nice work Johnny.
Really appreciate it. Means a lot. Go Lions!
Imagine if Ra' started his entire rookie year... would've surpassed Puka's #'s and hold the rookie record for catches and yards!
Great point!
@@johnnygazsports Also, if I recall correctly, the main reason Ra' didn't start right away was because of OC Anthony Lynn. Ra' took off after he was fired and MCDC took over playcalling.
That right. The WR depth that year was so awful I’m surprised it took that long.
Amon-Ra First Down
So True!
This video got me so fired up! Nice job
Wow thanks! Yes sir gonna be a fun year!
Gritty > griddy
Nice! I may steal this lol
WOW! THANK YOU. GO LIONS.. DCL
Brad Holmes considered trading up back into the bottom of the first round to draft Levi O. He decided to wait, and sure enough Levi fell to them in the second. Brad was soooo excited to get him. Levi, Jamo, and James Mitchell were all drafted with an injury and all have been underwhelming up to this point based on draft equity and time on task. Was this just a failed strategy of Brad Holmes to try to find value in injured players, or does it just add more time to development than one might assume?
When you play the injury risk vs reward game you are bound to miss on a few. But you're right in a sense of if they hit on enough players where some others can take their time and develop into something. In the case of Mitchell I think he may have lost some of the athleticism and explosion he showed in college. For Levi it might just be more time, this year he may take a jump.
If you watch the 2021 Lions draft video, you see Dave Dorsey being hired as someone who was mentoring Brad Holmes during the draft and always told him to "be patient" and your player will fall to you......one of the most important lessons Brad learned early on as a GM.
4:46 key word mantality ( spelling wrong) the talking heads actually thought they were going to bite knee caps.
Nitty Gritty Lions 💥💙
They really judged him and the situation based off his physical presence and energy. So glad this has all worked out. Now they can eat crow lol
@@johnnygazsports for sure. Dan lives it. That’s why it’s working.
If the rams took him instead of tutu, he would’ve been just as good there imo.
I agree that ARSB could have flourished pretty much anywhere. HIs work ethic and drive would take him places.
Great player in the right place at the right time with the right players and right coaches
Can't argue this one. Things really fell the right way for ARSB and the Lions!
The only way players stopped hutch was by holding him on every play
Outlook for Jamo this year assuming he, ARSB, and Laporta play all 17 games? (Targets, Receptions, Yards, and TD's) The Lions saw a lot of single high safeties last year.
He has to come close if not supersede what JRey gave last year...40 rec's for 608 yards and 5 TD's. I think he has soooooo much more sped and big play ability that if they can find get him the touches the yards and scores will come naturally. My guess would be that he exceeds this number of catches and yards and finishes around the same (5) rec TD's. But he may add a few rushing TD's as well!
Why did the Lions lose in the NFC Championship game? Was it going for it on 4th down? Josh Reynolds dropping passes? Gibbs fumble? Goff off-target when he was under pressure? Playcalling? Coaching overall? Player execution overall? 49ers out played them in the second half? Something else? I know it's a combination of things, but what do you think?
As always great questions. It really is a combination of a few things. 49's are just a good team and their talent caught up. But I thought the Lions were aggressive when they could have been safe and safe when they could have been aggressive (didn't go for it on 4th down just before the half...could have gone up 28-7 instead of 24-7). The failed 4th down conversions hurt but we also gave up a freak long play off Vildor's head and Jamo dropped a TD pass late (also you referenced the Gibbs fumble). Any of those plays flip and the Lions could have held off the 49's to go to their first Super Bowl.
@@johnnygazsports I can't help but think about the scouting combine interview with Gibbs. Scotty Montgomery asks him the best way to secure the ball and Gibbs puts his "clasp" on it. Scotty compliments Gibbs on it and says that he wouldn't want an expensive chain with a cheap clasp. Cut to the NFC Championship game and Gibbs runs the wrong way to receive the handoff. He doesn't tuck it in his elbow. Certainly no clasp on it and it easily gets stripped away. I know Gibbs is awesome. I know it's not reasonable to expect perfect execution on every play. Still, that was some rookie stuff at the worst moment that stands out to me above the rest. We were in the shadow of our own goal post when he fumbled and they immediately punched it in for 6 points.
You're absolutely right. A mistake like that cannot happen. I hope that is a true learning moment. Not only for Gibbs but the team. It hurt and still hurts but in the end this team seems to have way to overcome (don't lose back to backs) and I think that will apply over the bigger picture as well. We will need some luck but I feel good about what's to come.
@@johnnygazsports I feel GREAT about what's to come. I think it all comes down to health and how much improvement is there in the pass defense. I was thinking. Even if the new corners underperform on my expectations. This is still the best Lions secondary since I've been watching? Probably. Slay, Quinn, and Delmas may have been the best DB combo we've had in the last 30+ years and Delmas was on the way out when Slay came in. It's been yuck forever.
100% huge upgrades in talent and depth
ARSB reminds me of Jerry Rice. Obviously Rice was bigger and faster than Amon-Ra and his career numbers are unreachable, but they both push far beyond their limitations by outworking everyone else. Many people consider Rice to be the best WR in NFL history but few would consider him the most talented. ASRB is just like that. We got so lucky that he turned out to be who he turned out to be. Brad's the best, but I think he may have made a deal with the devil for Amon-ra to develop the way he has.
That's a good comparison! To put him in the category with the best ever is bold but they have similar work ethic and drive. Bread must have a magic eight ball or a rabbit foot back there lol.
Rice actually wasn’t faster.
Agreed ARSB is faster and more twitchy. Maybe a better route runner in general but the comparison for work ethic and drive is spot on!
Not to change the subject but Johnny did you hear something about a lawsuit against the NFL and the Lions could pay 448 million dollars. All 32 teams have to pay.
Yes the NFL ticket lawsuit doesn’t appear good for the NFL and the owners but this will be a looooooong drawn out process and nothing will truly happen for several years. The fear is that some ownsership groups will have to take drastic measures to pay and the Lions could be one. As this gets closer to true resolution I will update on the channel. For now we should enjoy football!
@@johnnygazsports thanks so much Johnny. I just heard about it. Thanks for clearing it up.
@@Brent6437it could mean some major changes but honestly the court process will be dragged out for so long and this will take some turns so I’m going to purposely be patient with the info I give on the topic. Appreciate you!

That was a classic line in that press conference!
This has been your best work it certainly helps that you're covering a complete player in human been here early and can't wait to watch your shows grow great work my friend
Wow, thanks! Really appreciate your kind words. Thank you for jumping on board!
Your moving up my ladder right behind miromike & dose of Deion! Very impressive !
Really appreciate it! Love those guys as well! Inspiration.
Awesome player profile!
Thank you very much! Go Lions!!!
I was spoiled for years with 2 kickers. Eddie Murray and Jason Hanson, then we had few good years with Prater but since….if this kid can get his leg under control maybe just maybe
🙏
“If you are hunting for us, you won’t have to look far. We’ll be on your front porch when you open the door”….thats one of them.
That's a good one!
Your video is great. So many of his quotes could be #1. If I can make a suggestion. The opening and closing music could be a little lower. It actually overpowers your voice. Or start low and as you're winding your thoughts down start to increase the volume
Appreciate the feedback. Will def adjust. Thank you!
During that opening presser he said to give him 3 years.....he said that...they made the NFC championship game in year 3...dude gets shit done. Super Bowl bound
Gotta love it!
Down vote for mentioning the Fat F&@$ Tricia. Great list. Campbell is the Coach Detroit needed. He will have a statue at Ford Field before it's all done.
Love the videos man! Keep it up!
I really appreciate it!
Good video 😂great energy
Thank you very much!
My fav video so far! Genuine coaching talent. A true connection to this game and more importantly, to his players. He brought everything this city, this Team has needed to succeed. Get that man a pet Lion! 🦁🏈💙🏈🦁
🦁 ❤
I thought J Jefferson the 7th round running back was off the team but is back on the roster now... and that everyone else is still here. I could be wrong. I agree that it's Levi's last chance and I really want him to show us why no table was safe once Holmes realized he fell to them in the 2nd round. The fact he came back from the back injury and looks good in drills after his first healthy offseason. He could lead the Lions in TFL's this year or he might not make the 53, neither would surprise me. He's the number one Lion I'm rooting for this season. I really want to see him be a reliable penetrator like he was drafted to be. I don't think Broderick Martin is in danger of losing his spot though. He's like Manu, in that he's a raw Red Shirt project that was picked because of what he might be after a couple of years. I think this is Martin's and Hooker's rookie year from the coaches point of view. Speaking of DT's. I love DT's. I love that Holmes adds DT talent every year. For me, a pass rushing DT is the second most valuable position in the NFL. I really want to see our DT's Fing up the offenses plays before they even get off the ground. Pass rush up the middle is the best pash rush, especially against pocket passers.
Can Mekhi Wingo step in and contribute early on? If so we are in great shape at DT. Assuming DJ and Alim stay healthy!
Is TE James Mitchell the Lions biggest blight as a draft pick and developmental player since the Holmes/Campbell era started? He hasn't shown the athleticism that he did in college on the rare chances he's gotten playing time. I know he was drafted with an injury, but with this coaching staff I thought we'd see flashes of something that showed why they drafted him by now. I know he's a decent blocker, but that might not be enough to keep him on the 53 this year.
He is definitely one that has not panned out. He shows just flash athleticism but not enough consistently with NFL talent around him. Once we resigned Brock Wright to that deal I figured they had no faith in Mitchell. I am really hoping we see more from Broderick Martin this year as well as Onwuzurike. Otherwise those two could be in the conversation. There have also been a few 7 rounders that haven't stuck around but I wont penalize them for that!
Dan Campbell is the whole package if you ask me. He came in and defined what he believed in, in his initial press conference. He said that having good coaches is more important than having good players. He brought AG with him from New Orleans. He hired Anthony Lynn formerly of the Chargers. Brad Holmes and him strip the team of most of the talented players and sign a bunch of guys off the street. The roster is as bad as it's been in forever, but he gets them all to buy in and play hard till the time is off the clock. This is where I think people don't realize how smart Dan is at all levels, in all phases. He fires the OC and takes on playcalling... and the offense shows immediate improvement. He finds Ben Johnson, who was coincdentally the TE coach in Miami when the Interim Head Coach job fell on Dan Campbell. Johnson is already working on the Detroit Staff and Campbell sees his potential and now he's thought of as a top playcaller in the NFL. How about the fact that Dan's going for it on 4th down opens up the the ability to run it on 3rd and long. Dan is not afraid even in the biggest moments to air his massive testicles, despite the fact that the media loves to tear down someone who goes against the grain. He calls more fake punts than anyone in the NFL too. I wouldn't trade this guy for anyone past or present.
Well said… He really is the catalyst for this whole thing. You bring up a ton of great points and ways that he has influenced the organization positively.
Steven A is such a loser.
Stephanie A is punk and I'll go even farther he's a grifter and a racist. Just look how he talks about Caitlin? He's always been a bottom dweller.
i got the vikes at 11 and 6 or 10 and 7, darnold makes playoffs
Bold my friend!
The pet lion thing is hilarious. And yet I would not be surprised if they did it. Think about it. With the mess he and Holmes inherited, they had one bad season the first year. Second year was rough but super exciting finish that earned the Lions respect.
Lion on the sideline lol! Been a great ride so far...can't wait to see what's ahead!
My order would have been different, but a solid list 💪🦁
The funniest Campbell line was during a press conference. He was asked about a player I think it was Hutchinson. - "He's good at getting in there and punching balls... Footballs that is."
😂
I reckon Chris Spielman brought the grit to Allen Park, if not Sheila. Good video. Can you do one about Sheila?
That’s a great idea. Sometime soon for sure!
How about a Dan Campbell comment where not everyone can be a Detroit Lion. He wants players who have a genuine enthusiasm and love for the game. If you don’t have that, he doesn’t want you. Even if you’re elite, he doesn’t want you, get the fuck out of his building. A lot of fans seem to keep forgetting this, when they demand that the Lions sign this elite player or that elite player. It is a key part of who Dan Campbell is, and why these Lions are so quickly turning into the kind of incredible winners that you love to root for.
You’re absolutely right. Perfect example is 97.1 during last years free agency when the Lions didn’t pull the trigger on a high price FA. They want their guys!
I dig the intro music
Really enjoyed the video, let's hope that these are a thing of the past. Go Lions and Tigers!
Thank you! Appreciate it. And yes lets hope this is all just bad memories!
Who would you give the most credit for the Lions turnaround? Sheila Ford Hamp, Rod Wood, Chris Spielman, Brad Holmes, or Dan Campbell?
Great question...the argument can be made that the front office changes and relying on smart people to bring in Holmes and Campbell are the catalyst but it has to be the RIGHT people to really turn the wheel so IMO it is a direct combination of Holmes and Campbell. They seem to have a specific aligned vision on the type of players and culture they want and just as important they have the charisma and energy to interject that into the entire organization! I would give most of the credit to those two!
@@johnnygazsports I agree that the current Lions roster and culture is a direct result of Holmes and Campbell daily grind. I think that the day Spielman turned down the GM job and offered to help find the right candidates, he single handedly saved this thing. I'm probably wrong, but it seems that Sheila went to Rod, who went to Chris and Chris found Brad and Dan. By putting those guys forward he chose the "specific alligned vision" that produced the players and culture. Getting one of those guys wrong wouldn't have worked and we'd be looking at another rebuild right now IMO.
@@LiberalMedia1Spielmans role in this is so important. Well said. The chain you laid out seems correct.
A bit of all. Sheila hired Woodson and Spielman to make the football decisions and they hired Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell. Campbell and Holmes are the ones who overhauled the roster together and built a cohesive unit.
I can not give "Most" credit as it has been a team effort through and true. But the Spielman job offer, rejection, and hiring as executive consultant was THE moment that got the franchise pointed and going in the right direction. BTW, I still give credit to Pride of Detroit (when they still had a PoDcast) and Herman Moore. After the Thanksgiving firing of Quinntricia, Herman Moore just happened to come on the Pride of Detroit PoDcast for an interview during the November charity fundraising campaign. He was asked who he thought should be the next GM, and his response was Chris Spielman. Not 24-48 hrs later, news came out about the interview/job offer. I don't think it's a coincidence.
Even if you only have 1 ass cheek and 3 toes, I WILL KICK YOUR ASS! My favorite quotes are when they're nonsensical and don't come out right. He shoots from the hip that's for sure.
What is your favorite Dan Campbell quote or moment?
i loved the press conference from the start
also, somewhere in that “GRIT” speech that I love so much, he talks about GRIT means giving 100% when you’re only feeling about 80%. Hell, any words that come out of this guys mouth is my favorite quote
I love Hutch and he's the only player on the Lions who has a chance to win it, but it's a very long shot. Hutch doesn't have the bend to get around the corner fast enough to lead the league in sacks. For Hutch to lead the league, the QB will have to hold onto the ball longer than 2.5 seconds. He needs coverage sacks more than guys like Watt and Crosby who get to the QB faster.
I agree it would take A LOT for this to happen. The "help" they got him up front needs to stay healthy. Hopefully the backend can hold for just a weeeeeee bit longer to give Hutch and others more time to finish.
If Bates makes the team and demonstrates reliability it will be interesting to see what effect it has on Campbell's coaching decisions. I really hope works out.
Bears could take a big leap forward like the Texans last year, because like the Texans the Bears have been building this team for a few years and they add a dynamic playmaking QB. On the down side, they have to deal with Hard Knocks and Swift is not worth the contract they gave him as we well know. The Oline needs to step up to make sure they're not one dimensional . Vikes will be better with Sam Darnold than many people would think. Darnold started his career at 2 places that don't know how to support a young QB. This is a whole different ballgame and Darnolds last chance to prove he's a starter. I think they will finish 3rd in the division. GB is a scary team. For years now their defense has underperformed based on the talent that they put on the field. Jordan Love is legit and so is his receiving corp. If they're defense and special teams perform on the same level I expect the offense to, then this team could win it all. Detroit has never been anywhere near this close to winning a SB. They've assembled a great versatile group of players and have continuity on the coaching side. Sky's the limit and I'm expecting them to get it done this year. Sizzler is well within sight.
SIZZLER!
Missing the field goal vs. SF in the 1983 playoffs Picking Terry Fair over Randy Moss blowing a 24-7 lead at halftime of the nfc title game, though I think they'll win the super bowl this coming season
That '83 playoff won is tough for sure. Almost beat Joe Montana!
The Lions should setup plays and make Hooker looking amazing then trade him away. I don't see Goff going away and Hooker has not proved anything yet.
Could be a good strategy but you are right he has to prove himself and earn some time.
Jmo gotta proove it he aint done nothing yet
Very true! He has to step up this year.
