I went through the selection process for NATS -failed at interview, bloody typical- But I had to do something similar! It hurt my brain!!!

I achieve my best traffic flow by elevating all highways and spacing them apart so I can lay a standard two way road in the middle. I give just a little more than 4 squares of space between the edges of each highway and the medium sized service road. This usually allows for upgrading to a large or downgrading to a small service road. Then I add on and off ramps at junctions, so I end up with an 8 way junction. Two roads cross in the middle with on and off ramps. it should look very symmetrical. That one node turns an angry red, but turn the traffic light off and it handles an extraordinary amount of traffic. You can ease traffic by adding on and off ramps on the outside of the highways so traffic doesn't have to go through that one busy junction. Overall, it works very well for its simplicity.

Where I live we had a DDI installed at our most problematic freeway entrance about 5 years ago. Traffic in that area is a night and day difference. While the road is still always full of cars, there are rarely ever traffic jams, and accidents at that intersection almost never happen anymore.

@6:27 - why not use a two way highway across the middle, then split it off at each end? Fewer nodes, easier on your hardware. I also use Move-It to straighten out the roads and angles until vehicles do not have to slow down to take an off ramp or on ramp. This contributes to smooth traffic flow immensely. I also use TMpe for lane control so idiot drivers don't cut across 2 or 3 lanes at once and jam everyone up. You can also adjust lane speeds to get through traffic to use the lanes away from the onramp. Effectively making it so only on and off ramp traffic use the on and off ramp lane. Just a 5 or 10 MPH speed change makes a big difference in lane/vehicle distribution.

My first thought when seeing you connect up the slip roads is that some of those stoplights can only fit like 3 cars before it backs up across the exit. Also, unless shown ironclad empirical evidence to the contrary, there is no situation in which I will ever believe that a design with stop lights is better than one without, when highway speeds are involved (and there is basically unlimited space)

My mom was an ATC for over 30 years working for the Bears (sector that directs traffic for O'Hare and midway.) She mostly worked O'Hare arrivals. She is now an ATC trainer for new incoming ATCs. I wonder how well she will do at this game.

I am surpriced Matt didnt place the watertank at the bottom with all the drills. It is simpler and less frustrating to dump the ice down to the tank than it is to bring it all the way back up. Did it backwards on purpose?
