I always thought it made more sense to have all the sorting and processing at the top, where the soil isnt as valuable. Use the better real estate for drills. Also, it simplifies the plumbing, especially for water and has the added bonus of making retrieval of the final products easier.
There is kinda a limit on how much you can do before the game starts to chug so just filling a level with drills is kinda impossible.

You know the ice from the lower machines doesn't have to be piped to the melter, it can be processed for resources too. You can put shard bars into vertical boosters, it's just more of a pain.
He wanted to have more water i think..
He dont know that a single drill can run water alone i guess 😂
Not to mention he could put a melter at the bottom to keep the pressure from the water higher, rather than conveyoring it up to pump the water back down. That is assuming he can buy/make additional melters.
3:35 to be fair, instead of that whole conveyor escalator maybe you could have just added another ice melter on the bottom?
or possibly just droped the output of the top miner down to the bottom and sorted it all together.
or maybe just bring everything up and sort it there (also giving you easy acces to mined materials), but you know he's the engineer he probably knows better :P
He's an engineer. It's their job to maximize outputs with minimal resources and labor. I'm sure he chose the most efficient shape.

He needs the ice melter to be as efficient as possible. The drills lower down poop out more frost rocks, so putting the drill at the top (for more ice) is more efficient.
ngl, this game would be a million times better if you could buy a "license" to place certain pieces and then a fee for each one placed. It's like the game is designed to waste as much time as possible with having to travel back and forth into town because you forgot to buy a 90 degree bend.
heck, just a planning phase where you could place ghost versions of the equipment along with keeping track of how many of each would save so much time even with the stupidly clunky ui and unintuitive item carrying system.
Having played it myself this is basically right, everything is a grind and its designed at the base level to just make you spend as much time as possible getting anything done. No inventory so even moving objects is a grind since you have one hand apparently.
Basic first stage automation takes HOURS of resource grinding to even start to get enough materials to sell to buy the machines. Then they break basically every 20 minutes so you can't even just leave them running while you explore or do another task on another site.
I wouldn't blame him one bit for using the dupe wand to actually make the game playable or he would be spending weeks of just grinding resources to make a build half this big.

Oh man what to say about this episode lol.
~Drills that at or above ground level will only produce ice chunks, no frost rocks.
~Ice chunks still contain resources so you are actually wasting resources sending those ice chunks back up top.
~2 drills making only ice chunks are required to keep belt running non-stop.
One work too. It just stop something, but the production is base on drill. Not conveyor speed ;)

Man, I love watching the end results in this game but the actual building seems so tedious. I'd never have the patience to set everything up.
Yet people complain about me using the flying hat to help me build haha

@@RealCivilEngineerGamingI'm proud of you for embracing Creative Mode. Playing games to make content is tedious and takes time. Creative mode ain't cheating, we're not playing. We're WATCHING. You take all the tools at your disposal and use them if it means you get to make these great vids!
I mean besides, once you have a fully automated system, you have infinite money anyways. Fight? Less time wasted moving. Hard hat? Less time wasted gathering parts to place. It's viable for content creators!
The way he's doing it really isn't helping him however. I can, (as a non-player of the game, though its got my interest), spot a lot of obvious optimisations he could do that would have made this a lot less tedious to build, though maybe slightly more expensive.
I'll add my voice - thank you for playing this. I love watching it, but having bought and almost immediately refunded the game due to tedium I can't imaging playing as much as you have

Matt, If you put drill above basic lvl of dirt(like 1 block above basic level) drill will only produce ICE, u need 2 drills fir 100% uptime without any sorting. Later Big Harvester can produce water so if u have high number of drills u will not need any ice melter.
right? i mean he could just use a shovel and carry some dirt down the hole and put it under the drill so he can move everything down below and dont' need the other conveyors
@@takumi2023 That's not how dirt works, drills detect where they are placed and give you yield depends on their height
You’ll definitely need to sort the gem stones, they changed the compactor a while ago so it only does one type at a time.
I hadn't played in a year. Came back and loaded my old save. Almost killed my PC from the gemsplosion. I was so miffed. Spent the entire first session back in fixing that crap.
@@Sphendrana I was fuming when I found out, exact same happened to me. Fought through the lag and set up separate ones.
@@timehunter9467 I couldn't because all my gems were precut, so even removing ores wasn't working. I have to make seventeen piles to get my frames up enough to even do the work lol.

Another pro tip for ya Matt is that if you use the scroll wheel, you can bring the building hologram closer or move it farther away from you before placing it down

You got me playing this game too. Obsessively. for the last two days. I just made my first tier 2 drill. \ o /
Please remember to put a gem polisher attachment on your straight conveyor and then you need seperate oogic compressors for the 4 gem types. I'd also set up a logic saw so you can cut resources to size now that you are making mass amounts

I'm fairly certain frost rocks can be melted into water. and ice chunks contain resources. it is unnecessary to sort them out.
After watching lets game it out this video seems so peaceful
the machine that make conveyors move could be just dow in the pit u just need to put the first level dirt under it

I noticed the drill only produces ice if it's placed a few blocks above the surface.
You should send all the gems to the top level via that elevator to sort out in the top level. That was you aren’t forced to dig a ton more.

the ice does get stuck in the harvester which is stupid as we never had this with dirt just keep a magnet near by to clear it quickly.
If the drill is above ground level (by piling snow underneath it) it will only produce ice.
matt its only one way the ice rock cannot enter melters but ice can enter harvesters

I am surpriced Matt didnt place the watertank at the bottom with all the drills. It is simpler and less frustrating to dump the ice down to the tank than it is to bring it all the way back up.

Yeah it's a pipe hook, place closest to the items using pipe power (we can't call it just hydro power anymore) and you can see how low the pressure is before it goes inside for example a drill.
Practically worthless to put right next to a pressure booster pipe since it just resets to Max at that location again. Soooooo they're basically best used as a tool rather than a permanent fixture. Just bring one around and pop it in when and where you need info. I only leave in places that frequently have pressure changes.
@@Sphendrana Not completely useless right after a booster, they can let you know when a tank needs a fresh bar if you cannot see the window
Just needed a sorter up top with all the ore going down a tube of funnels to the ore sorters below, life in the melter. Then the ores from below get sorted at the top with the ice going off to the same melter.
Ice. Not life.
Funnels are literally garbage and a waste. Better results using roof tiles. I've never had a funnel not get clogged up nearly 30 seconds after placing it. They just don't work well at all.
Ice can be used for resources
You can put shard bars in vertical ones you just didnt try enough
The materials have different weights so the tests don’t say too much

Am i the only one considering to use the shovel to get down T1 Snow under the drill for the ice ?
It doesn't matter where the dirt comes from, only the height value of the drill itself. If it is placed above the natural surface by a block or two, then you shovel a bit of dirt under the gear looking spot on the bottom, it'll give you only ice, its so much more efficient for belt powering than his set up.
You dont get frost rocks if you dig on the surface type dirt because shoveling a dirt underground to above ground isnt surface dirt so it pretty much guaranteed for ice not frost rocks if you dig on surface snow

Some tips i feel like you dont know: 1.:you can put items in a cart before buying them to stack them infinitely and purchase the whole thing by parking the cart in the buy zone.
2.:there are structural items like stairs, floors and walls which make going back and forth in the mine easier just so you dont have to use the flight helmet and you could also build a bridge with the m if you wanted to.
3.: logistics is op, use it
4: watch a tutorial on how water and lava pressure works in the game cus its just too long to write here
5.: you could have easily got lots of tokens with npc quests, not just the dino skeleton guy
6.: (this isnt a tip really) when an item touches conveyor, cart or car storage they lose all collision so literally nothing can effect them until they are moved off

I didn't think they needed to be sorted, frost-rocks seem to work fine for water..... for me at least!

Less time spent waiting? From speeding up conveyor. Nah the speed the conveyor go is unimportant the speed that chunks are made is important but slow conveyor just means more chunks per conveyor
