There is a version of diverging diamond that doesn't use traffic lights, "double crossover merging interchange" (DCMI). It solves this by adding more bridges, so Im amazed you didn't know of it.
was thinking about this the whole video. why crossroad with traffic lights? just put one road up and one road down. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
expensive
@@alchgaming2959 Have we ever care about the cost in the game?
I'm pretty sure he used it in another series, so he knows about it.
Just came down here to suggest exactly that.
This was a real architect move, right there. Eliminating a free flowing interchange in exchange for traffic lights while the shit runs downhill. 😂
Welcome to Intro to Corporate Enterprise Business Management Training 101; this won't be on the test... this is the test.
Oh, the Swindon's Lost Magic Roundabout at Bruce Street Bridges in 2014.
He even mentioned it’s not meant to be good though
@@Jim-Bagel exactly, it's just for looks... Architecture. 😂

if only, i know Biffa cant on their channel but if they did a collab here *chef kiss*
DDI is generally best for a slow moving road interchanging with a faster moving highway. The biggest advantage of it is that you can take a pre-existing diamond interchange and convert it into a DDI while barely having to change anything at all. On a slow moving surface road or even on an overpass, the crossovers can be plopped right down on the original roadway, and the guts of the traffic lights are already there, they just have to be shifted around a bit. You don't have to lay down any new road.
What often happens is they build a higher barrier between the two sides of the road where they're flipped, because it messes people up when they see themselves on the "wrong side", and they feel more comfortable if there's something that prevents them from seeing the opposing traffic.
Now I am starting to understand it. It looked like DDI has zero upsides if you already have cars on different levels. But as a cheap rebuild for “stupid” interchanges it makes sense.
@@deletedchanneI one of the big advantages is that it removes left turns across traffic lanes which reduces the chances for life threatening collisions.
@@MascottDeepfriar yep, I got it. It is useful only if previous implementation had this left turns on same level. I thought DDI is a replacement for multi-level intersections too

Me: Yeah, sounds like Britain, all right.
Road-nado is a piece of architecture. Just thought I’d toss that out there. However, “trumpet” intersections are a legit workhorse of an intersection. They are simple, take up less space, and they just work.
Clearly you need a fractal diamond interchange. A diverging diamond made of diverging diamonds. Send traffic into basically every direction possible, and maybe a few that aren't.
Need to park near the footpaths to the pedestrian zone? Take the fractal diamond.
How about shopping in downtown? Fractal diamond!
Need to dive to the depths of the new lake of poo? Fractal diamond!
Clip through reality to get your car up to the great draft table in the sky? Fractal diamond!
There is a diverging diamond near me. All it has managed to do is make traffic in the area worse, as the planners decided that, for some reason, they needed to combine it with a freeway entrance/exit at a point where a divided road loses its median and gains a left turn lane. The number of near misses that have occurred at it since it's completion in 2019 is insane.
Well, it's not the issu of the diverging diamond in this case. It's the idiot add, ill advised put on the middle of it, and who ruin it 😂
Sounds like one near me, I-70 runs under it, and there's a huge mall complex directly off that exit. Not sure if there's been increased traffic accidents, but it's extremely weird that it's there, and the traffic is awful if there's a high volume of people using that road to acccess the mall or as a road to travel off of the highway towards a destination.
I remember when they added a DDI in Anchorage, Alaska. A lot of people thought it would cause more accidents and traffic. The reality is that traffic collisions and traffic congestion dropped considerably.
Accidents happen where one path of traffic has to cross over another. The DDI cuts that number in half.
There's two types of people: Those that complain about DDI's, and those that have actually used it.
2:01 the fact that you were actually able to find a potato in the same shape
Phoenix, Az installed one of these not too long ago. absolutely hate them.
As a result of the angle of the x and the placement of the lights on the opposite side of the intersection from the line you stop at; when a driver is proceeding through the first light, they can, in their periphery see the red light stopping the oncoming traffic. The result is many people hesitating mid intersection, which intern causes a minor hiccup in traffic that gradually gets worse to the point of stopped traffic.
Happy Valley road and the I-17 for those interested in looking at it in maps. the placement of the lights is the real cause of the problem. city skylines puts lights on the corners right on the stop line so its less of an issue.
Additionally because the one in phoenix has frontage roads. So additional roads need to be connected into it which is messy, adds an additional set of lights, and exacerbates the problem.
one of the problems with the DDI is when the engineers decide to put it in with 90 degree turns on the on-ramps and expect people coming from the bridge to go full speed and the people who have to slow WAY DOWN to make a 90 degree turn, to merge seamlessly.
0:35-0:37 Plane was stalling and about to crash and at 2:24 it was very close to the ground. Great video!
As someone who has to drive through one daily, let me just say "Fuck the Diverging Diamond with a spiky metal pole."
Not only does it never cease to be vaguely unpleasant having to drive on the wrong side of the median, but multiple times a year some yahoo drives through the wrong side and there's a head-on collision.
I was gonna say, call it the "Tourist Terroriser", because anybody unfamiliar with all the various lanes and interchanges and transitions is going to be totally confused about where they need to go, lmao
We have one of these maybe near where I live and it is a nightmare since there is a NHS(Asian equivalent) near it and and an intersection not 500m from it. Cars that just got off the highway immediately had to slow down since people had parked on the side of the road (NHS parking overflow) and people struggle at the intersection where just no one would follow traffic rules
We have one of these in Michigan however its a tiny bit different... the helix portion of the road is "16 mile road" a major surface road and the straight through portion is the Highway "I-75". It helps woth congestion a TON especially because you no longer need to get off the highway and do a "Michigan Left" to go the direction you wanted to go, now instead if you want to go west its super easy to just go west instead of east then turning around west.
On the diverging diamond interchange could you not make a small bridge at each end and get rid of the traffic lights making it even more efficient. As the only reason for the lights is for lanes to cross. Make it a bridge instead
Looking how chaotic engitopia is, having a realistic intersection is really chaotic
New diverging diamond is being constructed in my little city IRL. I hope they actually do it correctly and don't try to reinvent things the way they usually do -.-
Looking at the grade separated junction reminded me of a construction of one of these near my home when I was growing up. It was part of a busy intersection and they had decided to "upgraded" it.
They had 3 severe accidents on it within the first week of opening due to a blind spot x)
My first thought when seeing you connect up the slip roads is that some of those stoplights can only fit like 3 cars before it backs up across the exit.
Also, unless shown ironclad empirical evidence to the contrary, there is no situation in which I will ever believe that a design with stop lights is better than one without, when highway speeds are involved (and there is basically unlimited space)
they just built a diverging Dimond near my city and the only reason i knew what to do on it was because of one of your other videos that you made one. thx
The university I went to put in one of those diverging diamonds near the apartment where I lived. It was great once they FINALLY finished construction! Especially when you're the one needing to turn!
Loving The Suspicious Shape Road Layouts You Build 😅
I live in Calgary Alberta. We have the first one of these DDI ever built in all of Canada. Drive through it on a regular basis. It works well and as far as traffic goes it does seem to help. I was there for the opening ceremony when it was officially finished and opened for all traffic. Remarkable engineering.
Nothing better than to come back from school with RCE
They did this recently in my area and the highway runs over the arterial, so the arterial has the stop lights going under the overpass
i love your cities skylines 2 videos, thank you for still making them
There’s a DDI near my apartment and I absolutely love it. Being able to turn left (in America, right in Britain) onto the highway without crossing traffic is beautiful. But my parents hate it whenever they come to town.
My town has the exact set up as the thumbnail photo. Everyone hates driving on that overpass. It has several stoplights that are at confusion angles and it is unclear where the line to stop is at.
i actually really enjoy seeing the different traffic paterns and enterchanges. I would love to see a city exploring ALL the different types of roadways and intersections.
There should be a hydro dam at both ends of the poo-canal, and of course, a ferry line for sight seeing architects. Additionally, you poo moat should completely surround the poo-cano.
Where I live we had a DDI installed at our most problematic freeway entrance about 5 years ago. Traffic in that area is a night and day difference. While the road is still always full of cars, there are rarely ever traffic jams, and accidents at that intersection almost never happen anymore.
I think the point of the DDI that may be lost on the audience is that it's a great interchange when the traffic going from one highway to another is higher than the traffic traveling through in the same direction. It allows for more merging traffic.
About a decade ago, the major US Interstate exit junction for my hometown switched to a diverging diamond. It definitely improved traffic exiting the Interstate.
Thanks for the new cities skylines videos, i always enjoy them
One of the small cities near me did the diverging diamond setup about 5 years ago as a test.
The exits now back up onto the highway almost daily and cause accidents at least once per week.
It use to never back up to the highway. Stupid idea.
In my town, we have a ddi planned at a major highway/interstate junction. It will be the first in a 500k metro. Part of the project is replacing the bridges and that’s underway. The ddi hasn’t been approved yet cus the county is worried drivers will get too confused. 😂
FINALLY A NEW CITY VID
This was my favourite episode of this game so far and I’ve watched most of the ones from about now to two years ago
"Oh, I'm liking the cable-stayed ones" Sounds a bit like...an architect 🤫
A bit down the road from where I (sadly) live, Glades Road and I95 in Boca Raton, FL... this diverging diamond exists... it's absurd and I'm not certain it is better than what it replaced.
The best thing about diverging diamonds is how much safer they are. Efficiency is cool, but safety is always number one.
That turbo roundabout using 2 lanes everywhere makes it so confusing, i mean, if you google turbo roundabout, they look much simplified as they dont use that much lanes, making it much less confusing and i guess more efficient, the one in 20:44 is just a creation of an Architect
day 28 of telling mat that 6+9=15 and 6x9=54 and 15+54=69 which means that (6+9)+(6x9)=69
Daaaaannnnnnggg! Thas like a triple nice! Or a nice!ception! Or something!
69ception
Noice!
But why have crossovers before and after the bridge, and why have them on the same level?
"Here is a design intended to speed up traffic by eliminating stoppages, so let's put in some unnecessary stoppages!"
16:41 as a brit you should know to never trust truss 🤣
You should upgrade the bridges to three lane motorways, because if the traffic is building up to much, it will block the cars which want to turn right causing a much quicker build up and block the other side of this junction. With three lanes this conflict should be reduced, because the sliplane is less likely being blocked.
I love diverging diamonds, but they cause a lot of headaches for people not familiar with them. It's so easy though, you literally just follow the lanes.
A DDI is a service interchange, where for connecting two freeways you should be looking at system interchanges
There’s one of these in a town near where I live. It is universally hated by all locals. It’s a pain to navigate
We have one of these near my old uni (just with the crossroads under the main highway) 😁 as an engineer myself, I got excited.
A DDI is far less efficient than the Turbine.
It also really only works when the thru traffic over the interchange is very small compared to those coming on and of the freeway.
Living in a state in the USA that built some of the first, they are also very inelastic and fail quickly at capacity.
Take a look at the I-96 and US-131 interchange. It's like a variant of the diverging diamond but with no traffic lights. It's in Grand Rapids, MI, USA
I always have the same burning question. It looks quite tight in some bits for big CE lorry's. Might be interesting as a video idea to make one more lorry friendly.
Before i started this video i was like “he should do the diverging diamond like the one built in my town” and boom, you do it lmao
I have been waiting so long I'm so glad for more Cities Skylines 2 not saying I did not enjoy the other games but this series is my fav
I drive on one of these every day on my way to work. It is surprisingly painless
We have one of these in Colorado Springs CO USA and it gets a lot of complaints. But it has cured a terrible backup/accident area.
The diverging diamond, an intersection where you have a chance to momentarily drive on the wrong side of the road
FINALLY SOME CITIES SKYLINES
Its time for you to do the 1 mil population challenge!
They added a few of these in Utah when I lived there, it was CHAOS! Definitely the worst drivers I've encountered anyway, and this just threw them for a loop.
i pass through a DDI every day i go to class, it never ceases to amuse me when i have to drive on the "wrong" side of the road lol
Yizez!! that's one a complicated motorway... well diaminds are though arent they LOL
We actually have this on where i live here in california, when you exit the freeway. I was so confused at first
Could you put a yield instead of traffic lights that makes the people on the bridge stop for the people coming off the freeway
Watching this video I had a realization that I know of a DDI in real life. Pretty cool. I can't believe I didn't connect the dots before considering this can't be the first time RCE has explained this intersection in a video.
We are getting one of these here in Tulsa! The DDI, not the poo river... The mythical River Stynx does not flow through our area. No architects here.
It’s funny we actually have a few of these here in south west Florida. They’re building another one in my current city of fort Myers
They put one in kinda nearby me in Missouri and it was terrifying the first time going through. Felt so wrong lol. Now it's fine and fun to go through
The turbo roundabout spot is screaming for SPUI.
Hello There! I have a fan request for you! Basically it’s making a City on a mountain, the inspiration for this request is Mount Olympus from Greek mythology, and you could search up Greek mythology, just in case you haven’t heard about Mount Olympus, plus (I’m not sure about this, But) I heard that there is a sandbox mode and has infinite money, sense I’ve seen that you had trouble with money, so if you don’t want it to happen again, sandbox mode maybe your best choice, sense I want you to make a large population of at least 500,000 - 1,000,000 people which could be you goal in this video, might take a while but it would be manageable hope you make it!
14:45 and here I thought the name of that engineering marvel was "Dysentery Bridge"...
Diversion means fun in Spanish. Never thought of that before. When we have fun, we're diverted from more important things. And I don't even think this wasn't on purpose.
I lived in a U.S. city that has a diverging diamond. it worked really well and from what I understand reduces the chance of traffic collisions drastically.
“Stop what you’re doing babe, a new Engitwopia video just dropped”
I had an epiphany while watching this and realized I use one of these quite often when going to visit my in laws
new editor loved the ding sound effect lol
We just had a Diverging Diamond Roadway implemented in my city in Oklahoma. Just seen a video on it functioning and its neat! Its on the underside of an interchange on the general roadway. so same concept but reversed
I would have a panic attack being navigated through this by Google Maps
DDI, also known as was Dance, Dance Intervention

✨Matt you have a problem ✨
We actually have one of these where I live, its interesting to watch it work!
Diverging Diamond sounds like some jjba stand
Finally he has some traffic on the correct side of the road.
Matt you gotta make a PINAVIA Interchange. Pls
17:21 Missed chance to give the bridge a duece in its review
I demand more skyscrapers forests as the Architect 😂
19:24 there is a mod for that where you can have key on one side and buildings on the other
We have this type of intersection in my town in Canada as an experiment and it’s honestly the dumbest looking but the most efficient intersection I’ve ever driven on but no one wants to admit that it works 😂
I always thought diverging diamonds had more bridges instead of traffic lights
18:00 looks like a great place for a dam
What we want from engitwopia is more episodes💀
Absolutely lost it at bridge re-poo 😂😂😂
For the diamond, change the crossover intersections, into over-unders. No lights needed.
Brilliant work Matt
They actually just replaced the on/off ramps in one of the exits for my city to a DDI!
We have on in the prairies, on Highway 1 in Saskatchewan near Regina!
