Drifting Low Power + The Right Setup can still Shred!
Welcome to my drift build. The vehicle is a 323i BMW E46 with an M52 engine.
In this video I head back to #queenslandraceway to get my drift licence to be able to run on the main track.
The event is hosted by #skidcontrol who seem to run like a well oiled machine when it comes to events. The Bimmer ran flawlessly and I was able to dial it in only by adjusting tyre pressures.
Nothing major broke, and fun was had.

Can you share your alignment set up ? Toe , camber , caster ?
Front 3mm toe out, 6 deg caster, all the camber, 45psi Rear 3mm toe in, 0 camber, 25-35psi I think I cover it on episode 19 but toe and tyre pressures sometimes change depending on the track.
@BertusBuilds thanks man 💯 , I just installed the same angle kit so far so good just needed some alignment tips thanks alot man 😁👍
@@franciscodominguez4347 alignment results may vary ☺️ but they work as good base settings for me. Good luck. 🤙🏻
Nice vid! Perfect for researching this option. I see a few others have asked but how many events have you put on it? Been holding up? Any highway driving with it?
Thanks mate. I have done about 6 track days and no issues.
From watching other videos people said that inline setups tend to make the pedal brakes more unreliable. Have you ran into problems like that? The looks of a single caliper peases me more than having a double caliper. And the cost of install and parts increases a fair bit too.
Mine feels the same as it’s always been. I can’t vouch for other people’s setups. Hope you have some success. 👍🏻
@@BertusBuilds Thanks for your reply!
Hey mate how did you get the hein joint to the k frame to align straight rather then being maxed out on itself?
Bay wv
How has this kit held up? Long term
Good. I’ll do a review soon. I get asked this a lot.
(2002 325i)Mines cranking fast but but not starting I have a po455 code too idk if that’s related to why its not starting but ima try this and will update is it works
Does it have fuel and spark?
no swaybar?
no swaybar 👍🏻
Any particular reason why not, or just preference?
Nice one mate ill be watching this series and drop a follow 🙂
Hi mate, I've been wanting to get these for my 2000 e46 323i sedan but Maxspeedingrods keep telling me they dont have coilovers for 323i sedan, is that a mistake?
They should have yours available and in stock. Just looked them up, shows ready to order. Only some colors are not available or coming soon 👍🏻
You’re looking much better than your last event! I got a 323ci and started practicing but sadly the transmission blew out. I bought a new one from a junkyard but now I need help with the flywheel and clutch kit. I was looking at a kit from Luk and one from Valeo. For the flywheel I’ve read that dual mass is best for when you’re starting to learn. Thoughts/suggestions before I full send it on parts?
That sux. On a getrag I’m guessing. I’ve never liked dual mass. When I used to be in a shop they were costly and problematic. Seem unnecessary for track use. They are smoother for day to day use but I don’t know maybe they’re better options these days.
@@BertusBuilds Yes, getrag 5 speed. I decided to go with the dual mass option after all. Mainly because I still need to work on the cooling system and didn’t want to put more stress on the engine with a single mass conversion. Time will tell if it was the right choice. Appreciate the reply and keep it up!
Is this with the brake booster deleted?
had this problem with a bmw e36 six cylinder it was fuel pump
Love the vids
Yes!!! Stoked to see a new video from you. Love your content!
My tune sometime goes back to stock. Il turn the car off & turn back on & that resolves. My e46 had the m50 mod
I have no tune. It never does it when I’m up it. Only coasting. Faulty coil will usually fail under load so I have no idea. Quirks of owning a BMW ☺️
Few pointers from my perspective. setup wise 1. Front suspension too soft. 2. Lock kit combined with wheels rubbing, what makes the car unpredictable lottery, cause rubbing makes A LOT. Driver wise: 1. You have some short diff I think so on 2nd you are not underpowered anymore. You should start to work with the throttle, not just be pinned. 2. Lift the throttle AFTER or at least durning the transsison, not before. Lifting before makes a lot more snap, which going back to your too soft, rubbing and too less grip front disturb you to be conistent and smooth even more. Other then that - car looks good in drift 🙂 if you implement all above you will be ready for tandems
Mate that is the most constructive feedback I’ve had. Thank you. 🙏 The rubbing is definitely an issue I wanted to tackle before my next event. I have no Swaybar in the front. Do you think it’s too soft bodyroll or overall. I bought it with no Swaybar but did want to put one back on.
@@BertusBuilds I like a lot to analyse people setups and driving - this is how I learned a bit how to drive and change in my car what I feel I need 🙂 When you don't have front bar it is overall good and bad in two cases. good cause it will reduce the body roll and maybe will help enough without stiffening the spring rates. It will make the transissons lot smoother. Bad cause bar reduces grip. So I would for sure add some bar (not even purpously big, just some stock 6cyl) but at the same time you have to change your front to tires to some proper quality, more sticky ones. Make this changes + some overfenders to not rub. Then test 🙂If you want we can analyse next events further, drive and check. Maybe it will be enough. Hope that will help 🙂
@@FaworDrifts thanks again for the feedback. I will try out some of your suggestions. 👍🏻
I had similar misfires as yours on my 330. New plugs and rebuilding the DISA valve solved it for me. (O-Ring was cooked and valve was broken)
Love to see the progress! 🔥
Love the vids I have a 320ci e46 drift car it sure is underpowered but enough clutch kicks makes everything work 😂
Best way to learn 🙌🏻
good run! Seems like you could do alot better if you just had a few more laps there🤙 Nice to see you drift again🙂
It was a long day. Heaps of laps. My camera shit itself.
Thanks for the review, mate. Getting these for my 2003 ride. I've heard enough good comments about them if you're on a budget but want something street able as well.
I bought my maxspeedingrods for my e46, and they are the biggest pos in the world. Since installing them, I've had a constant knock and other suspension issues
yeah but how did you install them correctly? did you tighten everything before install? set correct pre-load? if you don't, you will have these issues especially the top nut comes loose on most coil overs.
did you buy the old model or the newer one shown in this video?
You’re the fuckn man! I love the video helped me with my e46. I tell you man those dang apprentices 😅🤣 much love!
Dude this makes me feel so much better about my first time
Nice! drive bare foot 😊
Hey mate I'm in the process of trying to buy a BMW E46 as a drift car and I was wondering what steel rims are you using
hey man, what type of grease r u using
Just plain old bearing grease.
@@BertusBuilds thx, probanly a dumb question but i just wanna get the right shit lol
@@corvo46 no not at all 🙂. Standard grease only bad on rubber components.
@@BertusBuilds 👍how’s this kit held up? thinking of getting it when i get my next paycheck lol
@@corvo46 zero dramas.
Thanks mate for sharing
You cant "hunt" down a paper gasket because BMW stopped making it for the E46. The correct procedure is to use RTV gasket maker. BMW says this.
Use a rubber mallet! It doesn't damage the diff and itll cut thr gasket easier
I always lightly oil my gaskets so they come apart next time and I dont have to scrape that much
Good tip, thanks!
Meh. Imma just throw some black RTV on er.
I have an F10 with the N55, just did rod bearings and oil pan. Used OEM oil pan gasket. Did everything following the manual. Both main seals as well. Still leaking. Nothing crazy, maybe 1 droplet of oil overnight, but it pisses me off that it's only gonna get worse. I wanted to put rtv but decided against it because since the tranny also bolts to the oil pan, without the metal gasket it would move the tranny bolt holes. But it couldn't have been more than like 2mm so maybe they would still have fit. Just saying rtv doesn't go bad like those god awful gaskets bmw engineers pull out from the depths of hell.
Even easier with a rounded hamer
or a rubber mallet
I watched a couple o vids from other creators and was just constantly skipping forward to find the real info. What a load of unnecessary waffle. Then i found you. Covered everything nicely and in good humor. Really great vid man. Thanks.
I'm having a crazy bounce non stop in the back. Any ideas why
😂brake fluid bong thingy
Keep it up brother
Any issues with the cooler or lines? Looking to do mine and wasnt sure on the quality of the ebay stuff. Cars looking mint!
I would probably go a bit higher quality if it’s for engine oil cooler. Steering cooler is on the low pressure side so not so bad. One of the fittings stripped on the cooler thread so not great. I would probably recommend spending a little more if you can afford it.
Jesus Christ mate. I think you picked just the right moment, one more even and she would have shat that subframe out! I’ve got a welded 3.15 in my coupe daily, only really do the odd wet skid but I will 100% be doing this before I start drifting in anger. There’s a chap here in UK that does it inc poly bushes for £800! Not worth me getting may hands dirty tbh.
Totally agree. a few more clutch kicks and it would have left the chat.
shit before the racing for wight reduction
How much did it weigh???
This looks like a knock knock hydrolock
I’m not drifting through creek crossings. She’ll be right mate 🤙🏻
Thanks for the vid. Watched the rest of the build series a while ago but couldnt remember if you said previously, but what wheels are those?
No worries. Dynamic wheels round hole 16x8. They are meant for Commodore which is slightly smaller hub, which means they have to be bored out a bit.
@@BertusBuildsThanks👍
Looks pretty difficult, but saving that chunk of money isn't bad... thats extra money for more tires!
It’s not that difficult, but it is if there’s a lot. 😁
Considering you droft and beat on these and they haven't broke is impressive
Yea, I simply bypassed all the headache and ordered myself a machine. You can do your mates tires and charge em a little bit to have the machine pay for itself.
Yes that definitely seems like a better option if it’s regular. 👍🏻
Always hyped when a new vid drops
you reckon you could dial this kit in for hill carving instead of drifting?
Short answer Yes, but it’s not really what it’s for, this is a cheaper kit that’s good for drifting and that’s about it there is a good chance after a lot of hard driving it may snap and you have to buy a completely new kit cause they don’t sell spare parts for these cheaper kits, you’d be better off buying nice adjustable coil overs and maybe some steering adjusters for more angle
