Sizing Water System Based on UPC 2018 Chapter 6
This is an instructional video on water sizing based on the 2018 Uniform Plumbing Code. This is the second sizing exercise I've done here on the channel. Water sizing for a residential plumbing structure is not as difficult as it may seem, and hopefully this helps. Please watch the video and if you any questions whatsoever feel free to ask! I will always answer questions.

      At the time of this video, the intention was to teach according to the state journeyman exam where I taught the class. These videos were a result of having to put the classes online during covid. You are correct in your comment that more could be presented. Based on the classroom setting this was intended for, throwing more into the mix would have been counterproductive. I appreciate the comments, and I may add a specific presentation on sumps in the near future.

    BG - I'm not a plumber. I'm a lay tenant. I have two questions: A. Moen claims their discontinued 1960 Moen 2215 Single Handle 1225 Cartridge Non-Pressuring-Balance Valve will discharge 10-GPM maximum of hot and cold water @ 120-PSI from the Moen tub-spout and 8-GPM maximum (12.35% less) of hot and cold water @ 120-PSI from the shower-arm (only 2.5-GPM hot and cold from a showerhead rated such). B. Per the 2022 UPC (Section 610.3, Table 610.3, and Appendix A), I made the below Hunter's Curve calculations for our 8-Unit 1906-built but 1960s-1970 upgraded fixtures Apartment: 1. 87.50-WSFUs for 36 Fixtures (8 of which are bathtubs/showers) 2. 87.50-WSFUs converts to 40 GPM (rough estimate) 3. 300-GPH Hot Water Tank C. Is the 10-GPM flow rate correct based on a 40-GPM water supply -- but only for the cold water supply, for up to 4 of the 8 tub-spouts at the same time (10 x 4 - 40-GPM)? D. Is the 8-GPM flow rate incorrect based on the 300-GPH Hot Water Tank -- only 5 of the tub-spouts, only 5 of the shower-arms, or any 5-combination out of 8 (8 X 5 - 40-GPM)? I assumed I can't convert the 4-WSFU assigned to each bathtub/shower into a 4-GPM hot and cold flow rate for each -- correct? Thanks! I hope you can answer my lay (non-plumber) questions.

      In many cases, an "eyeball estimation" is acceptible. When running offsets of longer than 4' in an exposed area, using a less forgiving material such as cast iron, a minute of time on a scratch piece of paper or a construction calc app on the phone will save material, time, and inaccurate installation.

    Great illustration, thank you! One question for you. How does footnote 3 from Table 610.3 come into play? It is in the CA Plumbing Code which is based on the UPC. I believe this footnote should also be in the UPC. "3 The listed fixture unit values represent their load on the cold-water building supply. The separate cold water and hot water fixture unit value for fixtures having both hot and cold-water connections shall be permitted to be each taken as three-quarter of the listed total value of the fixture."

    This video is good but a little misleading...the code states that we are to use the full fixure values listed in the UPC code book to size the cold water supply to the house as well as to size the meter, however, what the video is not telling you is that when sizing individual hot OR cold interior sections of water piping, you indeed can reduce the listed fixture value by 25% for any fixture that has both hot water and cold water going to it. In other words you can multiply the fixture unit by 75%. This can drastically reduce the sizes of different sections of your water system.....And you will not starve any of your fixtures of water by using this method as its in the code book.

    • @BGsPlumbingClass
      @BGsPlumbingClass Před 4 měsíci

      You are absolutely correct about the 75%, and on top of that, you could even size according to bathroom groups. The purpose of the video was to go over the basic sizing parameters based on the journeyman exam for the state of California. The exam does not cover the 75% method, which is note 3 in table 610.3 I appreciate the feedback, and thank you for bringing up this additional option.

    at 18:35, you show a vent being offset horizontally with long sweep 90s before it gets 6" above the flood level rim. Isn't this a direct violation of the very first part of 905.3? Don't you have to use 45s to offset below flood level rim to keep it within the definition of "vertical"?

    • @BGsPlumbingClass
      @BGsPlumbingClass Před 5 měsíci

      That's a great question! So, if structural conditions prohibit vertical means, then an offset using drainage fittings can be used. The first sentence in 905.3 states "Unless prohibited by structural conditions..." That is the justification for such an offset. Again, great question, I hope I was able to clarify this for you.

      And then fussing with makeup, long pieces, tight spaces above duct work in a joist bay at the rim of a house; the numerous environments that pop up, that aren't a rigid bump number right in your face. I definitely have some frustrated memories, of seeing how much easier, and time saving, it would have been to measure center to center on any type of pipe, and familiarize myself to the dimensions of the fittings I used day in and day out.

    • @Dustin_the_wind
      @Dustin_the_wind Před 5 měsíci

      If you push plumbing to its capability, it truly is amazing how much you can make the job go easier, with a center to center measurement. One reason why I make my layout marks so large, so they're still there for all to see after I drill the hole, and me to measure with. Save a bunch of sketchy ladder ballet, or recessed number acquisition frustration.

  • @Dustin_the_wind
    @Dustin_the_wind Před 6 měsíci

    Thank you Ben. This is why I like just sticking to larger residential projects. Colorado inspectors want to see 3" vents always, at 16" off roof, builders want as few penetrations as possible, so you gotta do the song and dance while basically not saying, "I'm not running this whole run to tie the house together, just to save a roof jack and curb appeal." I personally like seeing plumb vents, gives character!! And tells a story on what you got going on.

This man is teaching, if you found more information through experience, then huzzah for you; there are others who still need the fundamentals of how you actually aquire the number, and know how it works. This number gets you close, and then you know what to subtract depending on what brand and/or material you are using for further/future efficiency. MAKE SURE THE TWO 45'S YOU HAVE ARE THE SAME BRAND. Pardon and forgive my language, but it seemed needed to be said. I do not appreciate those attitudes, AT ALL. I know we should just ignore people like that, but there's the lesson for them too. UGH.

    I understand from a cost standpoint, but just piping a separate trap under the sink drain with stacked santee's, and dumping the dishwasher discharge in its own standpipe just seems the ideal setup; not impeding on the sinks drain rate in the event you are running both your sink disposal side, and dishwasher simultaneously. Why isnt that just the code? Thank you for the lesson, I really appreciate it. And that's a hehe. The dreaded cruise control behind the wall fixture supply piping. Been there. Gotta love them 10p.m days. I really did a number running some in series high temp baseboard; i dont even remember how I messed it up, but I remember that I did. I'm just curious, one thing I noticed when you sized the laundry room, you ran it in 2"; I take it that being mandatory to discharge from a 2" washerbox trap, into a 3" drain pipe, is a colorado code? Ive seen some cowboy installs doing remodels, and surprised they functioned, but I imagine something happened with suds backup to warrant the 3" sizing for a washer box. So plumbing everywhere else, 2" is acceptable? Thank you for the lesson as always.

    Indeed, thank you. There is a huge lack in plumbing education representation, in comparison to the other trades. Which I just don't understand. Every city, or town I've looked, they need plumbers.

    The 1 1/4” main for that small residential house is a bit insane lol even though it’s code you’ll never ever see anything more than 3/4” around here where I live

      When distance forces smaller diameters to increase velocity, it shortens the life of piping and fixtures. Pressures don't change, just the force (thumb over the hose - so to speak).

      @@BGsPlumbingClass yes I am well aware it’s also diminishing returns the pressure drop is felt all around the house when you open multiple fixtures I was just saying it’s unfortunate nobody knows how to size mains we do it properly in my company though

      There is a current push to re-evaluate the whole sizing parameter. With all the advances in water restrictive fixtures and materials, many believe the methods that have been used for decades are outdated.

      @@BGsPlumbingClass I am from NJ and we use the NSPC it’s not great for water sizing the UPC is better method in my opinion I use it to size small commercial buildings and moderate size we also use it to size the water service into the building I never have any issues but the residential plumbing companies around me often just put what’s there back and it’s usually 3/4”! And then folks add 2 Bathrooms and a sprinkler system and wonder why the showers have no pressure lol

      The UPC utilizes the best method of water sizing I've seen.
