Shooting the Mamiya RB67 in Sardinia | Landscape Photography Trip on Medium Format Film

A few months ago I visited Sardinia (Italy) on a bouldering trip and I decided to bring my film photography gear along. This major italian Island has some incredible views and the landscape is full of hidden gems and secret spots. I enjoyed shooting with the Mamiya RB67 a ton and I always brought along the small but mighty Rollei35S to capture both scenic landscapes and more casual shots. What'...

My (old) new camera has arrived and to test it out I decided to head up to the mountains and shoot some gorgeous late April light with it. It's the Mamiya RB67, a film camera which shoots a variety of formats thanks to the interchangeable back and the ability to rotate the film back. I love the whole mechanical system and I had great expectations for this roll of film. I was once again blown aw...

      Absolutely by eye 😂 the good thing is that shooting at F16 on a pretty wide lens you have a very good depth of field to play with. I've found that past 5-6 meters it's pretty easy to have the subject in focus (sorry I'm bad with the conversion between ft and m). Things get difficult when it's darker, but generally speaking I would always try by eye and learn from the mistakes

    What a beautiful location, and no people around!! This camera is a beast. Hope you are continuing to enjoy this camera. Fuji are an amazing company and we can only be grateful they produced such amazing cameras. I don't have a 617. I do own a GSW690 which I love. Thanks mate! All the infrared images were shot with the mirror locked up, it's paramount with such a low shutter speed. These were all on colour, but I did not see the point of using it. Do you use it every time?

    Great video! For best results try exposing with sunny 16. At least double check the light meter indicator with your gut, the eye always wins. I prefer it over the light meter of the Rollei.

      Hey John, thank you so much for your comment! I'm using "light meter" app on android. That's how it's called, but if you use apple I'm sure there's plenty more. I'm shooting with the 90mm, which has a matching field of view of around 45mm on full frame 😊 hopefully the weather gets better and you can shoot more yourself!

    the video was very nice, but you got to change the music. The drum machines are out and it is hard to hear you over that incessant clicking noise. Thanks for your video : any particular reason you shoot portra 400 for landscapes ?

    • @michelefranciotta
      @michelefranciotta Před 11 měsíci

      Hey thanks for your comment! Portra 400 has a great exposure latitude and can be "abused" more than other film rolls. At the time gold 200 wasn't avaiable, so portra 400 was one of the easiest film stocks to work with in a testing situation. The colours are also very pleasing!

    • @fthprodphoto-video5357
      @fthprodphoto-video5357 Před 11 měsíci

      @@michelefranciotta thanks for your reply it’s an interesting approche indeed, I photographed a bit on my Fuji GX617 using Velvia 50/100 and Provia 400 (still have some stocks) but the exposure is sometimes very hard to get evenly on the whole frame especially when using the 90mm lens (with central filter) I also tried Kodak Ektar 100 which is quite saturated with good results and black and white film of course ! but never thought about shooting Portra 400. I also compared the Fuji frames with photos taken the same moment with a small Sigma Quattro camera and results are very close thanks to the Foveon sensor.

    • @michelefranciotta
      @michelefranciotta Před 11 měsíci

      @fthprodphoto-video5357 that's such a great lot of information! Thanks for sharing! You should try portra as well on your next landscape film adventure 😊 there's another video on my channel where I shoot Kodak Gold, portra 160 (didn't go well) and also B&W film during a summer trip here in the Dolomites. I've also shot some provia, slide film is absolutely great but hard to nail in terms of exposure. It is better to avoid high contrast scenarios with it...

      Hey Corey! That's a smart question actually, it's a Manfrotto BeFree Advanced. I would not recommend it 100% for the RB67 though, as maybe something sturdier would be better. I still use it as a compromise for weight when hiking.
