"Adirondack Wilds Railroading" Big Moose NY
On May 4, 2024, my trusty canine companion Witold (vee-told) and I headed up to Big Moose NY to video a New England Rail Excursions (NEREX) charter at the summit (2040 feet) of Adirondack Railroad's line. This point was also the summit of New York Central's Adirondack Division as well as the highest elevation reached on any mainline tracks operated by this "fallen flag."
Northbound and southbound views of the nearly 30 railcars (a/k/a "putt-putts," "speeders," and "motor cars") are featured.

Each spring rail traffic to the big mills in Sangerfield & Waterville NY spikes. The railroad carries farm supplies, primarily fertilizer (probably feed and seed too I'd imagine), helping farmers' bottom lines as rail transport is cheaper than trucking. Good write up. Good to see Witold. Watching from south of Central Ohio. ❤️🙏
Thanks for a great show!! Loved the video. I REMEMBER the Putt Putts. They were powered by small two stroke engines and would only fire when needed and kinda relax if not pulling. I am originally from Illinois and lived close to ICC RR lines.. MY favorite things were the flame thrower weed killers they used in the 50's.That was so long ago they were not even painting graffiti on trains yet. YEP, them wuz the good ole days..
Hi from York, England - what a great video, thanks for sharing! I have never seen such a bizarre sight; I could tell Witold was impressed, too!
It was a breathtaking experience for him! Lol
Very nice with the long telephoto someone's got to win the standoff I think the guy in the car on the left thought he got a free ride on parking because the fire truck was there then all of a sudden had to move quickly once the truck left. Very nice video
Looking in from North Yorkshire, England. Love your informative videos. Can you tell me the history of the four horn warning- two long, one short, one long. Thanks
It’s the required sequence on all US railroads when a train approaches a grade crossing. Here, the putt-putt guys were doing it just for fun upon spotting Witold & me.
Excellent video. 👍
Thank you.
What do the sound is a old werewolf clips.
I think I'd be the guy in the one with no cab - open air - then my wife would want to come along and my second one would have a cab and my brother would ride the convertible. Looks like fun. What's it take to turn one of those around for the return trip?
Beautiful woodland with the tracks running through, love it! 👋 to Witold! The rails look a little rusty they wont be when the Putt putts roll by. Oh they are so cute! Love how they are in different colours. Ive never seen anything like it just amazing. I would love to have a ride on a Putt Putt! Thank you RR & Witold this has been one of the most entertaining video's ive seen on YT. 😊🐕👍🚌
That's Bigfoot country up there! Better be careful. Nice video, thanks!
Hi from York, England! Good to see signs of Spring in the countryside, and interesting to hear about the construction of the on-street trackage. I guess it would be a big job if it ever needed to be replaced, but I'm sure Witold would be able to help with his knowledge of the legal aspects. The new camera certainly gets good results!
Nice video. You are truly a "Johnny - on - the - spot" in the right place at the right time.
Thanks WJM!
Have you ever gotten to ride in one of these? Thanks for sharing!
Yes, several times--here's a video from one of my rides czcams.com/video/z9J7jDt2EBE/video.html
@@railroadingrambler218 wow thank you looked like fun except for removing fallen trees! 👍
Not a very friendly bunch only a few waved and beeped there horns!
I suspect it's a very friendly bunch when you get to the lunch stop. I imagine that's the point!
I live in Belton MO now but in 2011, we lived in Queensbury NY. We drove through the Adirondack Park to Tupper Lake, Lake Placid and Old Forge as well as North Creek. It is a wonderful area. Cheers to Witold, the Wonder Dog!
Great filming of these motorcars. Greetings from Germany to you and your loyal companion Witold. 💗🙋♂
Love Street running
It’s a rail anchor
A front row seat with no competition kind of like the Indy 500 you're the only spectator well except for Witold who would apparently rather be home. @7:20 that modernistic one was the last hurrah for Motorcars and I remember many in views of Canadian National but I question if they really sold any in the US. The one exception was the US Army as there are about six of them here in Milwaukee at their 757 th training battalion. Having ridden a few they are fun but the two biggest drawbacks is the noise so you need ear protection and bring some decent seat cushions the ride is rough. Owners need to have good mechanical skills and parts availability to keep these running. If yours fails on the road and you can't get it going within a few minutes outcomes the toolbar to either push you or pull you which reduces the speed and makes that other car work harder. Just watching these remind me of the late seventies early eighties when several times a year I'd see Jimmy Shoto who patrolled the being triple track main line from Union Avenue in Chicago do either Eola or Aurora on the West End where he got to put on about 70 Mi a day with the trustee yellow Fairmont and the trailer for parts and tools. Snow or rain or heat off he went and over the years his car got hit three times but he was alert enough to see the disaster coming and none were his fault. No doubt deceased by now every time I drive across the bridge on the Dan Ryan freeway where the tower used to be he truly was the first line of defense on the old Burlington Everywhere West
Keeps the ties from shifting on grades.
Interesting, thanks!
Rail clip....
Great video. Brings back memories for myself when I did a motorcar run on Canadian National trackage Vernon,BC to Kelowna. It was thrill of a lifetime. Cheers from Kamloops,B.C Canada
Very cool, been to Beaver River many times. Would love to travel there on a putt putt. Where can get one?
Great video from Morrisville NY. Love seeing these things.
The Sante Fe war bonnet was always a favorite paint theme. ... We have a BNSF depot here in town where they do crew changes and we still see that paint job fairly regularly ... sixty some years ago all my HO trains were painted SanteFe colors
Watching from Toms River, New Jersey
You and Witold have a lot of beautiful scenery there on each side of the tracks and that was a lot of rail cars, you and Witold have a great week.🇺🇲🚂🚃🚃🇺🇲
I love this! I love trains. I remember as a kid The Erie Lackawanna RS-3 dropping box cars at Fay St. warehouse
Thanks for sharing this video with me. I remember the trains coming to the warehouse across from us on Fay St. in Utica when we were kids. I also lived on Schuyler St as a young adult and the train used to ride down the middle of the street. I forgot about how that used to sound until this video brought everything back.
Maybe used for strapping something down but it's probably too small for that. Enjoyed the video!
John, you found a rail anchor. The writing is 105 Dudley rail.
I really enjoyed the video They can go quite fast. I captured some last October in Hummelstown Pa. Not this many though. I have two short videos of them on the Middletown and Hummelstown R.R. in Pennsylvania.
Watching from Castleton, NY
What a fascinating little group of putt-putts! Think there were less on the second half of the trip? What a parade! Loved that some waved at you. Witold is always such a good boy!😊 Maybe that metal thing was a rail clip part? Thanks for bringing us along! Watching from Rome NY
Tulsa, Oklahoma
What a cool video. Definitely my favorite on your channel. I’d love to own one of these vehicles or even just ride in one. Thanks for posting this my friend!😎
Thank you. Never done anything like this but was in Tupper Lake when I was a kid, Mother and her mother owned some land up there. Wonderful part pf the state. Brings back great memories. Thank you again!!
Great coverage of this NEREX excursion. They were having fun as you could tell; the weather was not great but no rain at least on the video. Sorry I thought your boys name was Vito ; where does this name Witold come from ? I've been wanting to go on a NARCOA excursion for years; no one invited me yet.
I wanted an unusual name for him. While looking through names on the web, I saw "Witold." It's supposedly German for "rules the woods." I thought that would be a fitting name and am glad I chose it!
@@railroadingrambler218 Great choice, thanks for answering.
Nothing better than Railroad Rambler, Witold and putt putts on a dreary day here in Ri. Great video!
Railroad Rambler & Witold, a big HELLO! I’m excited to see how many cars. Thank you, kindly. Time for snacks for you & Witold.
Enjoying the video from Clinton NY.
Always enjoyable John! The sharing of a banana-nut muffin with Vitold, and then taking a nap, really made me laugh…as I can relate to that :)
The Santa Fe war bonnet painted car was cool 👍🏼
The altitude effects Witold. Doesn't matter whether it's high or low.
Ha ha!
Great vid as always. I seam to be out of the area every year they run this event.
I have seen railroad tracks on streets in industrial areas, but not residential.
Great catch RR!
At least that truck wasn't blocking the track. In Toronto, there's an occasional problem with people double parking and blocking the streetcar tracks. I'll soon have an LRT running past my condo, but parking is not allowed on the street there and never has been that I'm aware of.
Love and the NARCOA, I would have drove up to see them if I had known they were in area this weekend.
great video
