I'm a professional photographer from North Yorkshire and the first woodland photographer on CZcams. My passion is to explore, discover, experience and photograph the less obvious intimate scenes that are close to home.
I have a relaxed and considered approach to woodland photography. My videos communicate the benefits of an emotional connection to the landscape and the joys of sharing time outdoors with a four-legged friend.
I strive to craft images which do justice to the woodlands that continue to benefit my well-being. It’s the journey from discovery to print that gives me fulfilment and serves as a constant reminder that there’s much more to happiness in photography than a great photograph.

Mastering Awareness in Landscape/Woodland Photography
Woodland photography has a reputation for being challenging. Enjoyment of it is about the easiest thing I know, but what I'd class as good woodland photographs are infrequent enough to make the endeavour satisfyingly challenging and the rewards keep you yearning for more.
One thing that draws me back to our native woodlands time and time again is their power to transport you to a different physical and mental space. My personal experience is a feeling of child-like wonder and being engrossed with curiosity. My aperture of awareness widens. Why is that? I talk about my own experience and analysis of it in this episode, which will hopefully inspire you to look at things a little differently.

You Should Print Your Photos! Here's Why and How...

Printing your photographs is extremely rewarding. It can be expensive, time consuming, and sometimes frustrating, but it's one the best investments you can make in a quest to improve your photography. The vast array of textures, colours, and complex details make woodland a very special and fascinating environment to photograph. Those qualities are begging to be printed! In this episode I print ...

► Trees For Life Calendar treesforlife.org.uk/product/order-2024-scotlands-wild-forest-calendar/ Tom and I ventured out on a cold and windy morning in December 2018 in the hope of photographing trees in the drama of a snowy blizzard. It wasn't to be, so we archived the footage with the intention of returning one day. 5 years later and a last minute decision to meet-up, and we were rewarded with...

► 2024 Calendar with Trees for Life: treesforlife.org.uk/product/order-2024-scotlands-wild-forest-calendar/ Don't get me wrong, good woodland photography in clear conditions isn't what you would call 'easy', but that also depends upon your expectations and what you're trying to achieve. Most of us crave mist, but the truth is that many photographers rarely get to experience its magic in their l...
A Great End to my Photography in Wales

The conditions don't have to be magical to find great scenes to photograph in a temperate rainforest, but I do like to be wet. The rich diversity of bryophytes and epiphytes are there exactly because of the rain, humidity, and clean air. That richness comes to life when everything is dripping wet and glistening in the soft light. My final video from this trip was unexpectedly made during a brie...

I'm joined by Ben Porter as I continue my exploration of our Atlantic Rainforests. Living right next to one, Ben has knowledge and passion in abundance for our rainforests. We take a look at some woodland scenes from two perspectives - Ben's ecological mind, and my photographic one. Ben shares some fascinating facts, each one helping me to appreciate and respect the natural world that little bi...

There's nothing I love more than photographing somewhere new - discovering new trees, teasing out compositions, and feeling the excitement boil up inside. Episode 1 from my recent trip to photograph more of the Atlantic Rainforests of Great Britain. Despite the lacklustre conditions for woodland photography, I had a wonderful time exploring these magical pockets of oak woodland. Wizened, writhi...

Some unseen footage from the wonderful Woodland Sanctuary exhibition which launched 1 year ago. It was undoubtedly a highlight of my photography career so I'm very pleased to share some more insightful discussion between Joe Cornish and I. There's been lots of questions about camera gear and the picture frames, so here's a brief overview: The oldest print in the exhibition was Passing Through, ...

In this final instalment from the Atlantic Rainforests of Scotland I’m presented with some very dry and bright conditions, which aren’t the favoured conditions for woodland photography, but I still loved every moment of it. Compositionally, I’m pretty happy with what I have but time will tell if I can build upon them if I’m able to return to this location. I hope you’ve enjoyed this small serie...

A long overdue trip away to enjoy woodland photography further afield is just what I needed to feel inspired, refreshed, and recalibrated. „Grazing cattle” … so it is the place that I thought I recognised. 😄 Watching all the Atlantic Rainforest videos! What an amazing place.
Really great video teaching! Thanks so much!
❤ Thank you for sharing your insights!!
Thank you so much for introducing me to Rachael through this content. I found her work inspiring and, more so, her passion for the coast. Living in Orkney, I am blessed with some beautiful coastal scenery, but having visited the Oregon coast this year, I was blown away by the incredible landscape/seascape.
Aqua and Beyond landscape from Kozu books I can recommend these, fabulous work
I love your videos and they inspire me in my desire to get back into something I love, my biggest question since I no longer have camera gear is what drove your decision to go with Sony Over Nikon or canon gear. I am looking at all 3 but have never shot with Sony but have with Canon and Nikon. But I also notice a large number of Pro's are using Sony hoping maybe I can get some input from you or others who follow you that shoot with Sony and why .
Beautiful photos Simon there must be millions of photos left on hard drives and essential phones I always print at least some images and when I see the printed images I appreciate them more. Thank you for sharing your video
Fantastico. Jorge Neves de Portugal
Magical scenery, masterful photography. Thank you.
I notice you have the tripod extremely high which I understand why but how do you focus? Manually or auto?
Simon I enjoyed your video on printing. My question for you is how did you learn what type of paper best brings out the quality of your images? Thats my challenge when I go to print.
I love that the whole video was devoted to one photo. It shows the patience and precision around a great photo. (When you first walked by that scene, I was saying "That's it - there." Your videos improve our seeing.
The amount of times if watched/listened to this episode and for some reason never seen the snow version of dysfunctional family. It’s wonderful
Beautiful photo of the birch with hoar frost. Here, in one of the areas I live in Ontario Canada, we get hoar frost too. It provides so many different "moods" for the photo subject(s). Almost surreal at times...

Really enjoyed hearing the personal story and background that led to the narrator's love and approach to nature photography. The spotlight vs lantern consciousness concept was fascinating - having that more open, receptive mindset seems key to truly see all the details and magic around you in the woods.
Amazing
Thank you for this video. Your work is amazing.
Very nice and true video thanks. I made the same experience in childhood, but in my time in midden school we had 1 day were the teacher shown us pocket calculators. 😳, no computer There were only one , later two television channels and a lot of family did not had a television set and if it was black and white. It was clear we spent the time in the woods and surrounding landscape. At home we had chickens, Guse , cats, dog, ducks and …. This living close and in nature have been the base for my rekation to nature, same as for you. Regards
Hi Simon I've just got round to watching this video. How helpful and it's further added to my realisation of the importance of experience of and immersion in the environment around us being the provocation of creativity. As a fellow former angler who for years chased elusive monster carp (with occasional success 39lbs being the biggest) I too realised quite quickly the experience of dawns and dusk, watching a barn owl quarter a field in the early morning light and just observing the beauty of water and woodland was reward itself. I've translated this into my photography and with your help this week feel I've taken a significant step forward. Piscator non solum piscatur.
While you explain what does it mean to have awareness into the woods your dog is doing a practical example in the back 3:52
I think you can edit the EXIF data on a photo. Might find away toindex shots that way or just use a file card and a marker.
I am lucky to live on the Oregon Coast and get to explore beaches that are less known with my camera. My favorite is when I come back soaking wet from a dramatic storm without drowning the camera. Rachael would love it!
There is a Rowan County in Kentucky. Now I am wondering if the county wasn't named by early Englishman who pioneered the area.
Nice and interesting video, Simon. The P1 is indeed a beast! Short question, what kind of pouch are you using for your Cube?
I see videos and articles and book chapters about projects. Nobody really says what a project is. Is it whatever you are interested in? Can you shoot anything and call it a project? What is a project and how do you choose one?
Elements ist truly a suitable sponsor for your channel🎉
In the photo details it states 'daylight wb'. What is daylight wb, a setting on the camera?
White balance was set to daylight.
Thank you! Got it!@@SimonBaxterPhotography
Nice video. I grew up on vast military heathland fascinated by insects and unusual plants... as I grew up i could never leave it, so I built my career around plants and insects, accepting I'd be financially very poor bit emotionally the richest man alive. I'm now retired as a lecturer in tree anatomy, physiology and ecology and revel in how they all fit together into one 😊
Gorgeous set of woodland images in this video, Simon! Well done!
I felt the same when I switched to digital However, Perseverance has mede it worthwhile. I still miss the magic of film though,
Great video and post production. Love your dog hanging out with you 😊
Great shots, thx for sharing your expertise
The types of awareness you speak of, perhaps it is similar to barbara oakley's Focused and Diffused ways of thinking
Found you via Thomas Heaton, and his tethered video with Nick Carver. Your video had me reminiscing on my own childhood woodland adventures and how those memories translated into my own photography inclinations.
