  • There's nothing I love more than photographing somewhere new - discovering new trees, teasing out compositions, and feeling the excitement boil up inside. Episode 1 from my recent trip to photograph more of the Atlantic Rainforests of Great Britain. Despite the lacklustre conditions for woodland photography, I had a wonderful time exploring these magical pockets of oak woodland. Wizened, writhing, and wiggling communities of enchanted oak trees - you can't beat it!
    Looking forward to sharing episode 2!

    Came across similar oak trees in Exmoor, during a walking holiday. At the time I thought it was because of soil conditions and being near the sea air but could be a rainforest since it’s on the Atlantic side of Britain

    Through the chaos comes peace, from peace we gather ourselves and thoughts to make better who we are.
    Here on Argyll's Secret Coast we have the very best of the Atlantic rainforests. The mists, the twisted trees and wind blow along with moses and ferns... oh its midge heaven for sure but boy oh boy, the vistas we have have are for great times.

    Great video Simon and nice to see you back out again. I really like your longer shutter speeds where you allow the leaves to ‘brush’ part of the canvas as a matter of speaking. My favorite photos today were Inner turmoil and Good vibrations, where you get that nice softness while still keeping parts of the image sharp. Looking forward to the next installment.

  • @daslab38
    @daslab38 Před rokem

    Thanks for sharing these inspiring images and words of advice, Simon. I could relate to something you said in the beginning. I've been trying for some time to photograph a grove of beech trees I discovered in my local woodland. The trees are incredibly stunted - probably quite old given their size - and so full of twisted, contorted character! Two of the trees even appear to be interlocking their long slender branches in a startlingly social gesture. Nevertheless, all my attempts so far (even during those rare favorable conditions like fog) have left me dissatisfied. For one, the really interesting shapes are up near the canopy which often introduce strong specular highlights when pointing my camera upward. Secondly, the trees are on a rather steep slope and all views I prefer seem to be looking up the slope which causes key-stoning and other weird perspectives. But perhaps the biggest problem is, as you say, my heightened EXPECTATIONS. I feel very attached to the trees because 1) they are a bit off the beaten path and it felt incredibly good to discover them, 2) I feel the urge to document their beauty because (to my knowledge at least) no one else has and 3) their strong immutable presence just resonates with me so much. I still go up there quite frequently (it's about a 10 min drive and 30 min hike from my apartment), so next time I will try, as you say, to turn away from the obvious and lower my expectations.

      Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I've been in this situation a few times and it often helps to leave them be, and concentrate your efforts elsewhere for a while. You can then return to them with fresh eyes and a new appreciation :).

    Cheers Simon, it’s Sean in Atlanta! I love that first image that you named, “Respect“! It also looks like the younger trees are all reaching out to help the older one. That second image, “Outwardly Calm”, I also love because it’s got so much to focus on!
    And lastly, those images of that low canopied wood are spectacular, just spectacular and very magical!
    That woodland is going to be amazing in Autumn and Winter! It certainly was today!
