  • After an unexpectedly long break from filming, I'd like to first share some of my work from a week of woodland and landscape photography in Scotland. Due to some health issues, I decided against filming in Scotland which freed up some time to make new portfolio work which I'm very proud of. In this episode I've picked a variety of images from 4 of the 7 days and discuss some of my thought processes when making the photographs.

    Another wonderful video Simon and you have further solidified your place as one of the best landscape photographers out there and if we talk woodland photography...I'd say NOBODY is better! Your ability to see, interact, and capture a scene is simply second to none. And Meg sliding into the scene in the background is adorable. Take care my friend

    Good to see you and Meg again. I enjoyed the retrospective approach. There were some breath taking images which just reinforces the fact that you are a master at reading the trees and capturing what you see. Once again Meg had me laughing as she slid into the frame. Stay well and I look forward to the next foray into the woodlands.

    11:00 and 15:00! The snowy images do look like 'pencil sketches on a canvas of snow.' Just lovely...

    Good to have you back! I hadn't realized how much I value your videos until I had to go without them for a couple of months. I can't recall anything you've done that pleases my eyes as much as the last two images you showed here. Too often I see nice quality scenes being produced in the videos of the four or five photographers I regularly follow that are good work, nice subjects, and skillful postprocessing. The craftsmanship is unquestioned. Your two, however, are fine art photography -- cleaner, simpler, more disciplined and more evocative. I'm confident the edition will not last long. Regards.

      @@SimonBaxterPhotography When I posted, I had only watched the first few minutes of the video. Now that I have watched the entire episode, I have a comment (actually sort of a rant) about your proposal to do an editing video.
      Because I edit with software that is not an Adobe product, one thing that bothers me is that people who produce editing videos tend to spend a lot of time describing the mechanical protocols necessary for a particular image adjustment in one particular product. Because many editing packages permit the same sort of adjustments (just via slightly different protocols, perhaps) I wish they would spend more time describing why a specific adjustment makes sense for the given image -- regardless of the mechanical protocols involved in the particular software of choice.
      It would be as if a photographer produced a video on the techniques for shooting a panorama, but spent a lot of time talking about the particular buttons that are applied in a Sony, or a Canon, or a Nikon. The way the camera is controlled may be slightly different depending on manufacturer, But the key point for a panorama is to use identical exposure settings and focus distance for each image and not how those characteristics are achieved in a particular camera model. That is what photographers do with respect to videos about in-camera shooting techniques. But for editing, they seem to concentrate on the mechanics of how a particular editing objective is achieved in a particular product.

    • @SimonBaxterPhotography
      @SimonBaxterPhotography  Před 2 lety

      @@douglashaag1127 I think you've jumped the gun a bit, Douglas. I'm far more interested in the why, the how is only there to serve the why. I never show techniques in isolation :-)

    • @douglashaag1127
      @douglashaag1127 Před 2 lety

      @@SimonBaxterPhotography That's great. If that's your approach, I clearly jumped the gun. I certainly didn't want to infer that I was complaining about how you describe your editing process with which I'm not familiar. Upon re-reading my post, I think it is clear that I was ranting about my issue with photography editing videos in general. Perhaps I have not been a subscriber to your channel long enough to be familiar with what you do in this regard. As you describe your approach, it sounds like just one more reason for you being one of only three or four photography channels to which I subscribe.
