The 3D printers the community actually want: Your say in 2024
Check out my 2nd channel, TT Racing: www.youtube.com/@ttracingYT
Recently, I put out a community post inviting the 3D printing community to have their say on the state of 3D printing. This was a follow up to an influential survey from three years ago. In this video, we examine what the community likes and dislikes, their priorities, and propose a new 3D printer that aims to meet their needs.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond!

Making a cheap, open source 3D space mouse with Arduino and 3D printing *V2 out*

    so... I watch the whole video I downloaded some of the programs but.... I have never messed with any of these 3d programs or machines. My main goal is to make a cool 3d Catan board game. After looking online for a Catan brand game 3d it cost 350bucks so I looked at esty and seeing the prices of printed Catan games and game parts I thought maybe ill try it myself at this point but I feel overwhelmed. I plan to try to make my own stuff for the game in 3d programs, but again I have never done any of this and I already feel like I need a 4yr collage degree. Some of the prices on esty were 400-700 bucks for a 5-6 player Catan game fully printed and fully painted. I am still unsure what I am going to do I want a Resin printer because of its clean lines and details. I am confident I can set these machines up and get going its the 3d parts of my own design will be the factor so I plan to make my own 3d stuff 1st if I can then buy the printer only if I can make it myself I am not looking forward to buying other peoples prints because the whole point of this is to try to go solo and make other stuff like 3d body armor cozplay armor later on. do you have any advice for me ?

    So I have a problem with this idea. Like knowing your customer's needs is important but at the same time the customer can be and is often wrong. It's a balancing act. Like even if people are not interested in air filtration that should still be a priority. A lot of people do not realize that just because you can't smell it doesn't mean that FDM is safe. It still releases a significant amount of VOCs and particulates. Meta-analysis from several research papers shows that there is quite a bit of VOCs and microparticles from FDM. Same with eco packaging. We won't know the health effects for several decades but it probably is not great to have plastic particles in your lungs. Eco packaging is another place where just because the customer seems to be ambivalent doesn't mean you should ignore it. I also think there is a lot of places to try new things that customers don't even realize would be useful.

    as much as I am in favour of FOSS, Freecad is, in my opinion, the most unintuitive and obtuse CAD package currently on the market (even if it is free). I tend to stick with Fusion 360 until OnShape finally release their CAM module, assuming it is straightforward to use. (It just seems to have been on beta for ages).

    Guess im in the minority here, printing from the BL app. Maybe because im newer to the hobby? If i find my printer about to be idle and dont have anything queued, ill browse the app and print right from it. How about a slicer feature that allows you to scale-to-build plate? Not useful for everything but a fun feature.

    • @hawtdayum
      @hawtdayum Před 21 hodinou

      There are a ton of gatekeepers in the hobby. Things like open source, never ending tinkering, and tweaking was what the community HAD to put up with. They actually get mad when a simple to use, full of quality of life features like on bambu printers, show up. Printing without touching a slicer is something, maybe anker, has. But mulitcolor, slicerless prints is Bambu exclusive. I had to deal with the crap of yesteryear like leveling a bed with a sheet of paper, constant breakdowns, upgrades to get consistent prints. So on this channel you may be a minority now, but seeing how the market is going, you wont be for long.

    • @brianwaterman8185
      @brianwaterman8185 Před 21 hodinou

      @hawtdayum yeah I get it. I really commend those who have been doing this for years and decades even. As someone who really enjoys 3d modeling in Autocad, I've been wanting to get into the hobby for so long. It took someone buying me a printer as a gift (ACK2N) to get my feet wet. I don't mind tinkering, but I also don't want my hobby to consume me. I tried out the A1 because of months of frustration on the Kobra. I can understand why people would be upset that Bambu basically made a printer that took out most of the tinkering. Do I think the A1 is the best? Lol no. It has problems, but they are less frustrating to deal with. Which keeps me engaged. I now added 2 minis to my collection. Lol. It's rewarding to see a model I built, print with the level of detail and precision I put into the model with minimal learning curve. Thanks to all who have pushed the industry to give us a better experience overall. I generally avoid the community as I find it's easier for me to just learn on my own. Now I just need a core x/y and I'll be able to print the tall things I want to. Thanks for sharing!

    0:07 That is an "INSANE" amount of waste for the end products! No company would stay in business for long with that sort of inefficiency. I think by splitting your findings by group; hobbyist, professional, etc., you would find better relevance in the data. I have a print farm and care more about practicality and up time. The ability to purge the bed would be fantastic. Ease of maintenance is a huge need.

    Very impressive and very helpful! Another option for a cheaper 3D mouse is to look for some of the old, pre-USB units which are quite cheap on eBay. I'm not sure what hardware and software you need to adapt one for modern PCs, though. Another similar device which is even harder to get nowadays is an eight-dial dial box of the kind which used to be available for SGI and Sun workstations. Building one of those would be a relatively straightforward project but it might be just as useful to have. For the sim hardcore, one big challenge would be a faithful-looking, working replica of the Apollo Translation Control, a 3D controller designed to be used with the 3D-joystick Apollo Rotation Control.

    Nice project. But honestly i'm not really into 3d mouse. I have 3dconexions space mouse pro and rarely use it. I do cad for a living in CATIA v5. I actually teach students CATIA, and once a year i show them this spacemouse pro. and invite students to try it out. So far i have not made it to work reliably for me or any of my students. So far none of my former students use 3d mouse (and i have asked a few of of them that work in catia v5 in automotive R&D for years.. and no 3d mouse in sight). Maybe it's just CATIA v5 use case. In catia you can accurately move/tilt/zoom/center/fly your model just from the mouse. 3d mouse does not even compete with regular mouse for camera movement. At least i sometime use it in Ansys and Inventor, and some other CAD-CAE-CAM. I won my mouse at a CAD convention.. and tried to use it, let alone love it... i gave it a go for weeks-months and did not stick to me (i found it annoying to have the camera shift ever so slighlty if i touched the joystick or the table vibrated, so i had to unplug the mouse and now it lives in the box and not on my desk). I have mine from 2012, and still it sits in it's box, and once a year i present it to students one day, then sits for another year. I'm curious if you find it useful and not just a gimmik. I've tried, i failed.

I was very glad to see the latest Ratrig can be had with a 500MM bed size and I really like the way they do the 3 different bed sizes with the same form factor. I think modular beds that could be swapped out quickly and easily as needed are something innovative that no has thought to offer. One Thing you forgot i like to do. I am not the kind of person who has problems with supports. You could have oriented the model 90 degrees (face down on build plate, tail up in the air) - with supports on. This way you wouldn't have a material change every layer but maybe only every 5th layer or so. (For example: the tail and the face have red segments where the printer could do multiple layers without changing). this method depends highly on the model of course, but in some instances you can cut multible HOURES ;)

    Although I wasn't able to participate in the survey, I agreed with most of the opinions, and fell into most of the larger groups. I would add, don't overlook the market share of users that would be interested in an affordable way to reuse failed or prototype prints, whether through filament recycling (home extrusions) or pellet extrusion systems (from recycling to extruding). If it were in the $300 to $500 range for a full print bed to extrusion system (think completed print to recycled filament being reused), I think it would be a game changer for the industry.

After about 10 months i bought a Creality K1 (post extruder fix) and have absolutly fallen in love with it. I am a Creality fan mostly for their price point. i'm a tinkerer and am willing to spend extra time to thoroughly understand something. The latest project i just completed was building a CNC frame for the 5w laser module i got thats meant for my Ender (i didnt like not being able to print). If other manufacturers could bring their prices down just a hair to make them more accessible to lower income hobbyists like myself. Anything decent over $1000 is really out of the realm for me and i'm sure many others. Great video as always! 🖖🤙

    I think to ask how important recycling 3d prints is for people in general should have been also there.
