    3D printing slicing software developers are producing fantastic new features very regularly. Today, we test out the new SVG emboss in PrusaSlicer. This guide covers what an SVG file is, where to find them, converting to SVG from jpeg, and different ways to apply them to 3D models before printing.
    I also take the chance to update the performance of the 5 tool Prusa XL with the latest PrusaSlicer beta update. The ramming feature being enabled has made a significant difference, but there are still some areas which need attention.

    One thing I really like doing is hidden letters. Make the letters holes with a .2mm wall. The letters will show up only when lit from behind.
    I've made some electronics panels that way and they turned out amazing.

    I would really love to see you continue your multi-material/multi-color experiments by showing us how we can use multi-material capable machines to make removing support easier. BambuLab advertises that the AMS can be used to "use snap-away support material or dissolvable filament to minimize the pain of removing supports," I would love to see that in action and how that's done.

    Incredible news and well timed update, I was just struggling the whole day yesterday with how to properly extrude and bind a vector image onto surface made of complex geometry. Turned out to be incredibly painful to do so in Blender and my results were less than satisfactory, but after your vid I just tried it in PrusaSlicer and it's astounding how easy and intuitive it was, as well as the resulting quality that I've got. Well done PS dev team and thank you Michael for making this video!

    Michael in another YT video I saw they used a "bump" pad to align the print head between each tool change. As the print head doesn't always seem to lock into the same angle every time it's picked.

    While I'm a bit annoyed with Prusa, I'm glad to hear they are working on the issues. I have a Mini+ that I love to use and I'd love to have an XL and a MK4 once they've worked out the issues, but I'm thinking about building a Voron or a RatRig for my next FDM printer because, well, bedslingers just take up too much room. I have a Kobra Max and I need about three feet from wall to front feet in order to have room for the bed's full travel and still have the printer on stable footing. It really needs about 4 feet, which is why it was on my kitchen table for a while. (Good thing I live alone. I can get away with stuff like that.) I know that the XL isn't a bedslinger, but I'd like to have a fully enclosed printer.
    Glad to see work continue on Prusa Slicer. I've used both it and Cura, and I like Prusa Slicer more. The new features look cool. I just hope that we'll see the Kobra line supported officially. I've had problems with the community profile causing issues.

    Well, I might have sent my XL back from the issues I was having with it but it's at least good to know that if I decide to get one again in future it'll probably work far better. I didn't even have a toolchanger model and I still had some strangely terrible printing experiences.
    I'm holding out hope 3DUnplugged's DAKSH toolchanger system ends up being a good alternative instead. It fits on the more common kits like vorons and ratrigs.

    I'm looking forward to the SVG emboss feature coming to OrcaSlicer at some point, seems like a very useful feature for customising prints. It's a shame the Prusa XL is having all these issues. It seemed like such a promising machine, hopefully future updates will improve the features and quality. I'm also suprised it doesn't come with an enclosure. It seems like it would be a great engineering level printer with the capability to conveniently do multiple materials but no enclosure means ABS, ASA, Nylon and PC aren't really feasible.

Since I dont have a 3D printer this idea is only theoretical. Do you think that this idea would have any benefits or could work cheers Perry

    Hi Michael. I just wanted to leave a comment letting you know of the glory of R Type Nylon Rivets for all sorts of applications including 3d printing ones.
    I first learned about automotive plastic push rivets from a recent Robert Cowan video about using them to attach plastic parts to a peg board, but that got me searching and I found out about these R Type Nylon Rivets which are also push rivets so they are reusable but the big benefits over automotive rivets is that they are in all sorts of more 3d printer friendly sizes, and are dirt cheap.
    They are typically used for attaching panels together like pcb panels, but Im sure you can imagine how great theze are for many 3d printed applications like enclosures or molds or things where youd like the ability to reopen an item but dont want the hassle of heat set inserts or screwing into metal.
    These things both make it easy as heck to design for them in CAD and should last more than enough cycles for most use cases.
    They also look rather sleek and come in black or white.
    Just thought Id let you know the good news.

    From what I've seen, I think I prefer the Bambu lab and it's AMS. It would be prudent not to think of any AMS/MMU as "multi color" printer, it has limited (good) use, for instance, you don't need to worry about running out of filament and changing spools, printer can do that automatically, you could also use a different material or color for the bottom, and the top of a technical model, something that when implemented is visible only from the top side, you can use cheap PLA for the non essential bottom part, and expensive tougher material for the essential top part. The greatest benefit is perhaps multi material capability, and for that, even if it produces waste, it's very well worth it.

  • @jmo2321
    @jmo2321 Před 6 měsíci +3

    I think Prusa has taken the community for granted given their past reliability/deliverables track record. I think they really need to focus on testing/tuning/profiles for their products. I was torn between Prusa XL and Bambulab and pulled the trigger on a Bambulab. Prusa had YEARS to tune profiles for this printer. I can forgive the supply chain issues for delays, but there's no excuse for the poor profile/tuning issues out of the box. I think Prusa without a doubt intentionally released this with half tested profiles to pass the labor onto the customer which is a bit insulting. At these costs it's no longer an entry level project printer and should work out of the box. I know Prusa has done great things for the community, but this is a BIG fail on their part. Bambulab printers, as of currently blows it away in terms of speed, quality, and price. Sure, purge/waste material is going to be more than a tool changer but given the significant price difference of a 4 spool AMS + X1(~1600) vs the 5 tool changer XL (~$3500), I highly doubt I will purge $1900+ in filament. I really do hope Prusa get their stuff together though.

    • @LilApe
      @LilApe Před 6 měsíci +1

      Their profiles are tuned just fine as 95% of users have zero issues. Michael is using a .6mm nozzle on a super scaled down multi color mini print and expecting the quality of a .4mm nozzle. BL profiles aren't great at all lol. Their printers struggle to print anything that isn't PLA. Look at all the posts about terrible PETG quality on BL printers. Their profiles aren't set up right for them. Looks like you made a poor decision and should have done more research.

This is good, but I know there is a temptation to add "just a few more CAD features" and one day your slicer is also a mediocre CAD program.
