Totally agree. I can’t stand the metal where you can’t tell what they are saying at all. I can only listen for a little bit then I just get bored. It’s like it’s TOO heavy/screamy. I prefer the melodic singing with a mixture of aggressive vocals while being able to hear what they are talking about

I’ve actually never seen any mixing tutorials on metal. I’ve been working on hip hop the past 4 years or so but am definitely interested in metal mixing. Are you saying that most of them are just copy/paste and everyone’s doing the same technique?

Do you see metal music coming to the mainstream again? I’m tired of hip hop being the mainstream. Don’t get me wrong hip hop is great but it’s been up there too long

First mix i ever heard by Andy was The Front which I still play to this day. Been a fan ever since.

Reaper is my choice. It's rock solid, is a 15mb download, comes with excellent stock plugins with access to literally hundreds more that are all free and customisable. I tried Ableton but the first attempt to route MIDI on separate channels failed miserably so I went back to Reaper.

I just recently got the 2004 remaster on cd after getting the original on vinyl. Don't hate me for this. But i like both versions. Remastered or not, its still megadeth.

I just bought BiasFX 2 and I can see how it would be easy to get lost in presents and all that. I love the convenience of it especially since it’s my first amp sim plugin. Definitely would get a unique tone from micing a physical amp/cab

Great run through. Have been on Ableton for 10+ yrs. It’s pricey, but stable. You described its strengths well, combining live tracked stuff with virtual instruments is where it excels.

In Indonesia, Gunslinger by A7X is one of the most popular song in Indonesia, even a lot of Indonesian has Dear God and other white album songs in their playlist since white album released 17 years ago. The reason why they got so big overseas and not only in States because they more concern on songwriting instead of focusing on chasing guitar tone.

I’ve been watching for 8 years and YES we’ve reached an apex. Vendors are focused on expanding their buyers to non-musicians, DJs, Hip-Hop, EDM, ambient, etc. Beginner tools, generative midi, for folks that don’t play an instrument and have no music theory knowledge. The “one button plugin” does everything attracts 1,000 of sales with a promise that anybody can create and produce music - no talent necessary. The conglomerates that own Native Instruments, UAD, Roland, Focusrite, are driven by private equity investors who demand high returns. There’s only 2 way to expand profits. Sell to non-musicians or acquire innovative start ups with new tech. Both expanding their audiences. This is the reality of music business today.

Thanks! I’ve reviewed Toontracks drum software and it’s the best, but still haven’t bought it. Here’s my dilemma/. I own Logic, Komplete 14, Spitfire Ab Laborial, Playbeat, BFD, etc. Just Logic includes 1,000+ kits in Drum Machine Designer, Drum Designer and Ultrabeat. Komplete delivers 9 full drum apps, including 600+ kits in Battery! I feel like I don’t really know what I already owe. Now, most are single sample kit pieces - there’s only a limited number of multi-sampled / multi-velocity layered acoustic drum kits - which is what’s drawn me to EZ Drummer or Superior. What’s your advice?

It's like someone yelling about automatic transmissions... Think about it. I'm at $15k plus with real instruments, vsts, and mixing plugins. Should I not mix without spending 3 times that on an old console? Especially if I'm not doing anything. If he's taking about big producers not bedroom people the majority are hybrid. Even the small places. I don't crack plugins, never have, but this dude used to a lottt and he's bitching about people doing that as well... Because now he's selling them. Really don't like the dude

Great review. I own both. Used EZD for demos for my band. When we went to mix for releasing, turned to SD. Especially when integrating live recorded drum parts. The tracker function is gold. Also comes with more stock drums. Still love EZD, but I ended up investing in lots of extra kits, so the total cost was probably higher than SD in the end. Both great!

I think the point he’s trying to make is that he doesn’t hate the fact you can make a record easier now due to technology but that outboard gear definitely has a better sound than digital plug ins.
