I just want to note on your comment about the "big name voice actors" in Grandia Extreme. Specifically, that it wasn't the 1st game in the series to do so. Grandia 2 had a couple high profile voice actors, namely Cam Clarke as Ryudo and Jodi Benson as Millenia.

Vandal Hearts will ALWAYS be my fav Tactical RPG. heres hoping for a remaster someday. one can dream i guess.

Grandia one of my favorite series of all time

The first 2 levels are manageable but some of the mazes in the later levels had me walking in circles.

to this day i still dont understand why people prefer the magic/skill system of grandia 2 over the original

one of the things that was weird to me was when people called it Mako instead of Mako(May-ko like the shark). its still hard to hear lol

Suikoden 1 will always be my fave, was the first i played and i loved everything about it and the characters, suikoden 2 was also great and a close 2nd, didn't get 3 in Europe so it took me awhile to play it via usa ps2 back then i felt you can tell it wasn't finished how it should have but it did t many changes in one go for me and i didn't really enjoy the game, although i did like the chapter system with different heroes was interesting, 4 was slow and i didn't like the 4 hero combat system, should have just left it as 6 but all other aspects were going back to the originals, suikoden 5 did feel like it jumped back to 1+2 but modernized ugh and felt the game was to long for me i don't understand why people rate this better than 1+2 but maybe i just prefer the more old type games, playing eiyuden at present still taking my time is decent and enjoying it but feels its bloated by to many off task things to do and if you played it just for story its probably very short for an RPG really <3 - Viktor + Filk <3 best ever characters

Grandia 2 my fave i loved it and characters were funny, Grandia 1 i got to disc 2 and often just stopped not sure why if im honest but oh well, i own the other 2 games also but never played them, the battle system was brilliant, i think one thing i didnt like was the coming and going of characters

i didnt finish wild arms 3, i think this is the one where you had to grow your berrys and i didnt like that very much, if i recall the felt harder, even though 1+2 werent super easy specially when you were young, wild arms one was brilliant, i loved wild arms 2 for Knightblazer if im honest :) saddly never played 4+5 or the psp one athough i do own them all havent got round to trying

I'd say there are multiple archetypes of SRPGs (or Tactical RPGs or SLGs as they are called in Japan which is short for war simulation games) On the tactical side you have Tactics games which focus more on combat mechanics and are closer to being JRPGs on a movement based grid. Examples include Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Triangle Strategy, Front Mission, Disgaea, Luminous Arc, anything with the name tactics in it or isometric POVs in general. On the operational side you have games that focus way more on level design and characters being less unique and more like military units with RPS mechanics. Games like this include Fire Emblem, Kaga Sagas, Shining Force, FEDA, Langrisser, Battle for Wesnoth, Vandal Hearts, Rondo of Swords, Ogre Battle, Valkyria Chronicles, etc. Basically, your units are less customizable, more numerous to field and the level design (recruitable units, side objectives, turtling disincentives) are what's important. Finally, on the strategic side you have games which are similar to the operational level, but on a wider scale, bordering on lite grand strategy or 4x elements. These are quite rare in general and include games like Brigandine, Dragon Force, Lost Technology, Heroic Legend of Eagarlnia, Battle Brothers, Pokemon Conquest (although it's gameplay style is inline with Tactics games), etc. They don't all have to adhere to strict rules and guidelines though. Like pokemon conquest, Vandal Hearts is isometric/tactics like, but it has enough level design focus and gameplay styles that bring it closer to something like FE than Tactics games from Square/Quest. Similarly, games like Ogre Battle, Unicorn Overlord and Fire Emblem 4 border on strategic level rather than operational level due to their gameplay structure of moving across countries and fighting multiple fronts.

I don't think any game of this time captured a pure sense of adventure like Grandia, it's my all time favourite game. Love the second one as well

Grandia 2 is the favorite of the bunch. Grandia 1, a alright game with nostalgia vibe. Never played Xtreme or 3, those were never releases in my country. Shame, but at the same time, looks dull compared to the last two games.

Played this when I was Year 8 in school. finished it 3 years later. apparently the Puzzle and Maps are too hard for me back then. and my subpar English doesn't help. And the TOOLS usage is one of my favorite thing in Wild Arms 2. It makes puzzle harder and the map more innovative Fond memories. This one is on my top three in PS One Along with Tactics Ogre and Suikoden 2

Grandia II is my favorite, played it on Dreamcast way back and then again on PS2 and then again when it was remastered on Steam. Only gripe with the steam version is the added difficulty mode just making enemies damage sponges and not adding any real challenge. Soundtrack is so much fun and the story is great, can be corny at times but I love it. Grandia I is a really really fun game as well, i just prefer 2 I loved the gameplay and look of Grandia III but holy crap what a bad story. Corny brought up to a new level in this one.

Grandia 1 remaster doesn't add voice acting or was clearly present on the Playstation release😜

Grandia 2 was awesome! Mareg was an amazing character. Melfice was a cool bad guy. I love all the characters in this game.

I really want to enjoy these games, but I'm stuck at a spot in the first game (shortly after the boat area). Maybe a younger me would've powered through it, but that one dungeon is just so bad.

It was a decent game that scratches the Suikoden itch. Had a bit of a crazy difficulty spike at the end but I did finish it. Even got all the characters but it wasn't clear if the ending changed because of it. The music was quite good iirc, the voice acting was... as good as could be expected from the DS.

grandia xtreme was supposed to be about the battle system. they took the battle sys cranked it up to 11 and focused on that. it was never meant to be for anyone other the fans of the battle system.

I remember playing Grandia 3 with a friend back in high school and while it had a strong start, I remember it falling off super hard after the halfway point. And that final boss was just awful…

I just finished Beyond Oasis for the first time, and it was simply mesmerizing! I want to play this game so much that I'm considering buying a Saturn, but this game is pretty pricey. A disc copy sells for right around $100, and a complete copy goes for around $200.

Grandia 2 is to date one of my most replayed and most beloved JRPGs. The only version I never finished is the bonkers PS2 port. I think this game would have been a lot more known and the series much better if the PS2 version didnt ran like dogshit. Compared to the DC and even the early UbiSoft-PC-Port (not the Anniversary HD thing) its just the worst...

It is amazing how long I have kept watching your videos considering the quality and deepth of content has been stagnant the entire time. If there was any other dude on the internet that played and wanted to talk about all the same obscure RPGs I did, I would have moved on from you a while ago.

imho the Grandia III graphics look fine, both technically and stylistically - the actual problem is that it doesn't look very much like the Grandia games that came before it, and it is far less colourful - which makes Grandia III feel insufficiently authentic as a Grandia sequel.

I'm 46. I just beat Penance....with Zanmato. Have completed this game 4 times in 20 years. Absolute masterpiece.

i loved grandia and gII i actually ended buying the dreamcast just for this game good times !!! i must say i did not like grandia 3 ... would love to see retrospective on shadow hearts! was great series too

Love the retrospective videos! Xtreme is still my favorite combat system out of every jrpg.
