The way the bosses and larger enemies are setup and laid out gives them a good feeling of size and scale making it feel more grand and epic. That goes so much further than one would think on first glance

    • @Xygor

True, a lot bigger than most games, made it super epic son! JUST LIKE A BDEWD SPEEDRUN!

I am one of those weirdos who is very nostalgic for this sparse and ambient OST. I never questioned the Thor title from Japan before, I am going to do some digging and see what I can find. Love the video!

I am with you on loving the ost. I hold the Story of Thor as one of my favourite soundtracks of all time, alongside Shining Force 2, Soleil and FF7. The atmosphere is just fantastic and stands out from a lot of other games.

I never questioned it either. Just chalked it up to the Japanese using the name.

I love Beyond Oasis. Oasis is the name of the land, like hyrule in Zelda. There is a secret area that has a 100 room dungeon, that if you beat it you get the unbreakable omega sword. Definitely OP & worth it. During dungeon crawl use the slime enemies to get Dytto as she can heal you. It's the only way I can make it through. Never got to play Legend of Oasis. Maybe some day

As a fan of Street of Rage 2 and A-RPG, the Oasis games were like a river of fresh water in the middle of the desert to me! There are so few great martial arts RPG like the Oasis games!

Never finished the second one but the first is a old favorite.
Can't even remember how I found it, but was just my go too game for a long time.
Finding the secret areas and the infinite weapons were a treat.
Coming out of that pot with a endless omega sword.
My hope is that with this resurgence of Sega old IP, we might see this game again.
    I'd love it.

So glad you did this retrospective. It always frustrates me when I see stuff for the first game but never the second one. I grew up with Legend of Oasis and I loved it. I agree the puzzles were difficult, but I was also like 5 so…
I wish they would rerelease a port of the 2nd game, it needs some much deserved love

I would say the genesis version is the better one. The world feels larger in the sense that there is a bit more travel needed between dungeons. In the Saturn sequel all the dungeons were essentially directly attached. Though they were sufficiently large to still require lots of exploring.
Additionally I feel like the genesis version aged better. The use of pre-rendered 3D models make them look bad by todays standards while the old 2D art looks fine even today. For example, Leon himself in the Saturn version looks good because he's actually 2D.
Both games are fun and challenging though.

Always had a fondness for Beyond Oasis. Recently tried Legend of Oasis, and I was honestly a bit disappointed. It didn’t seem to have as many cool combat moves - seemingly trading them in for more convoluted puzzles.
I maybe didn’t get far enough until it got better, but I think I’d rather go back and play Beyond and see if my memories are better than the game was.

The funny thing is the ambient sounds can be really creepy in Legend of Oasis the zombies moan really loud in unison when a lot of them on the screen the Saturn had a heat sound chip and made a great CD player when you weren’t gaming I actually think it sounded better than the one in the ps one.

I played Beyond Oasis on the Switch recently. It was enjoyable enough but I wasn't a fan of some of the sections where I felt you had no choice but to tank enemy attacks and use your healing items extensively. Though I have no idea if the Switch's horrid d-pad had anything to do with that, I felt like I was struggling with the controls.

I had a Saturn a PlayStation and a N64 and honestly I preferred the Saturn over the N64 with a few exceptions of Mario 64 Zelda The Ocarina of Time Majoras Mask Goemon legend of a Mystical Ninja 64 and Ogre Battle 64 and Mischef Makers . I had Legend of oasis and Dragon Force shining force 3 and dark savior and they where awesome unfortunately I wasn’t able to find a copy of magic knight ray earth Albert odyssey or shining and the holy light I did have shining wisdom and I don’t think the game was as bad as people say it is maybe a bit generic honestly I think it’s just a stylization the graphics and art style remind me of the remake of links awakening on the Nintendo Switch.

toa, or tor, is the name of the shadowlands where spirits live. the name was translated by Western teams as Thor, creating the misunderstanding you are talking about. Oasis, on the other hand, should be the name of the game's world (Posidonia, in japanese, if I remember correctly). basically, at that time was pretty hard localizing a game and translators had to invent several things. Beyond oasis is, probably, a better name for western markets.
About the weapons in the game, normal additional weapons are treated as bonuses with limited number of attacks, but well hidden in the games there are weapons that never break down (and you will never use again the standard weapon, the altair knife).
personally I prefer the mega drive game. The sequel has better graphic and sound, but is not well developed. there are several aspects of the game that are almost useless (some weapon's scroll, the additional spirits, some items) and is really a pity. if you consider the technology available at the time they were released, the value of the first game is, in my opinion, much higher

this is the spiritual predecessor to the Alundra Games. the first one has a reputation of being difficult and it is but mostly it's psychological difficulty because all the villagers bitch about it every time you beat a mission. if you like Oasis you might like Alundra. I never played Alundra 2.
