WOODCHESTER PARK & MANSION- A HIDDEN VALLEY IN THE HEART OF THE COTSWOLDS #cotswolds
#cotswolds #englishcountryvillages #walkingtours
Hello and welcome back to the channel.
Today I am exploring a secret hidden valley in the heart of the Cotswolds known as Woodchester Park which is now managed by the National Trust.
Once home to a lavish house set in acres of wild parkland, complete with terraced gardens and a boathouse, Woodchester Park was the epitome of a gentleman’s country estate. Today, an unfinished Gothic mansion that stands within its grounds harks back to the human history of this landscape.
It’s a beautiful valley with 5 picturesque lakes and lovely footpaths and trails to choose from so come with me and I will show you round starting with this magnificent lake which I am told is home to lots of carp and where at dusk bats will skim across in search of some tasty insects.
Woodchester Park was the home of the Ducie family from the 1600s until 1845. Wealthy Gloucestershire landowners, the Ducies lived in a Georgian house surrounded by designed parkland. Here, the family and their guests could hunt, ride and enjoy elegant carriage drives.
You can still see the remains of the parkland, which were influenced by 'Capability' Brown and later by Humphry Repton, both famous landscape designers of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Boathouse
Located within the parkland surrounding Woodchester Park and built in the 19th century, the boathouse brings back memories of lazy summer days and the lavish boating picnics enjoyed by the Ducie family and their friends.
When the National Trust bought Woodchester Park in 1994, the boathouse was hidden by vegetation and the lakes were virtually enclosed by the conifer plantations around them.
The Mansion
When the Ducie family offered Woodchester for sale in 1843, the sale particulars described the coach house and stables as 'everything the most fastidious Gentleman can desire.'
William Leigh, a wealthy ship-owner, bought Woodchester Park two years later, in 1845. He demolished the Georgian house and began building a new mansion. However, things came to a halt 16 years later when he ran out of money, leaving the Victorian Gothic house unfinished.
Woodchester Mansion is a unique and amazing Grade I listed Victorian Gothic house hidden in a beautiful Cotswold valley.
It is an unfinished masterpiece. Building started about 1857, but stopped in the mid-1860s so floors and ceilings are missing, walls not plastered and windows unglazed. All the secrets of the construction of the Mansion are visible - something visitors will never see in another country house.
Haunted Mansion?
The house like no other can offer the psychically inclined a spine chilling experience. Woodchester Mansion is said to be rich in spiritual manifestations, and can be awe-inspiring for believers of a nervous disposition.
Ghosts abound in and around the Mansion, and, for those able and lucky enough to see them, include:
A young girl
A young woman
A short man, maybe a stonemason
A man attempting to hide
A man searching for someone
An American airman
A floating head
A horseman on the drive
People hear a girl singing an Irish air, 1940s music, and smell recently extinguished candles in the chapel. Other noises include loud bangs, and footsteps, though no-one is visible. Small stones drop from above, some reputedly travelling fast and horizontally. Strange lights, still and moving, are seen, but never recorded on camera.
I hope you enjoy the walk around Woodchester Park and please like, share, comment and subscribe as it really helps the channel. Many thanks.
Adrian

Lovely video. How do people in these small villages feel about cycling tourists visiting and slowly riding through? Are most of the public roads paved? Roads look ideal for cycling except not much room for cars overtaking. Thx for any info you can provide.

Hello Peter. Thanks for your comment. I didn't see many pavements as mainly narrow country roads. There were some cyclists about so I imagine its not an issue. There are very few houses and mainly spread apart so you should be OK.

I well remember the first time I was aware of Lacock was when I saw Cranford. I thought 'surely they haven't built a set that big; but nowhere looks like that nowadays'. In a way I was right because the Beeb had dressed it up a bit, but basically it was as it is. I have spent several lovely breaks there since that time and I can recommend it heartily, if you like that sort of place.
