This is the link to the broadcast soundtrack where Piece/Peace of Mind was first heard on "The Underground Railroad with David Hunter". It is the only time, as far as I remember that Piece of Mind was ever aired. But a listener was recording my show. From his aircheck recording, which you are about to hear, the whole apocryphal PIECE OF MIND legend begins. Somehow from my show that night in the Fall of 1970 it is passed along and winds up some years later included on a number of "Beatles Bootlegs" albums. In Manhattan in the late 70's, while visiting my friend who had made up the track, Walton Jones III, he shows me one of these albums with PIECE OF MIND as the title track of the album. The night that started this legend I am doing my broadcast of Album rock, all of which are now The Classics. I am running the control board while talking to Walton. Piece of MInd is cued up on the professional model of Ampex stereo tape recorder closest to me. 2 of these Ampexes were on my left. I had 'COME TOGETHER' cued up on my right side turntable. I'd invited my friend Walton Jones, a musician who had played Beatles covers in his high school band, to the studio on the occasions where we'd cover the Beatles for a couple of hours. My show was nightly Monday through Friday from 7pm to midnight or later, sometimes Saturdays. We had gotten together at Walton's apartment off-campus to record 'Piece of Mind'. I ran Walton's Wollensak which recorded stereo tracks at a 1/4 th width. As I recall the tracks were staggered so that you could record stereo all the way to the end of the tape and then flip the takeup reel of tape back to the left side feed reel and record again without erasing the previous session. Wollensak made this a 'feature' that enabled us by a switch on the head assembly to hear "the other side" and even mix it back in to the current recording. We wanted to use this feature for some 'backwards tracks' just like the Beatles had done. At any rate, here is a segment recorded of me and Walton that fateful night. I had asked maybe two years ago on two different online forums to please find and post this original recording of PIECE OF MIND -- IF it existed. Here from that night at WUSF-FM, from the basement studio in the old library building, is a segment of my show where I am chatting with Walton Jones as we hem & haw about our MYSTERY recording. I then start it up. It plays and as it ends I set the turntable rolling and crossfade into COME TOGETHER. soundcloud.com/user-435176804/radio-presenter-dialogue-piece-of-mind-come-together

A great review of a great album . Benefit has always been one of my favourites of the early albums . It has a lot of variety , and as you said , it has a lot of riffs and guitar . And I like the song Sossity You're a Woman as well . One of the things that I've always liked about them is their mixture of acoustic and electric rock , and they always seem to get a good balance of the two sides to their music . Thanks for the excellent video !!

Hey Jeff, well worth the wait👍🏻 I’ve always been a Jethro Tull fan, but watching their history is giving me insight to them as a band. I always wondered why they changed Bass players, that over parting can be detrimental. ☹️ lookin forward to Aqualung!🙂

Hey Jeff! Glad to know I got you on a Tull kick! After the Amazon screw up, I was all set to send this to you, but I see you have your own copy. So I guess the big question is; do you prefer this or 'This Was'? Any reason why you are skipping over 'Stand Up' and heading straight into 'Aqualung'? Looking forward to that, and hopefully 'Thick as a Brick'. Love these!

  • @jeffreyslotnikoff4003

Both Jethro Tull and Cat Stevens both tackled the same subject, conflict between generations, in their respective tunes: Tull's 'Son' and Stevens' 'Father and Son'. But while JT's depiction of the "father figure" is harsh, aggressive, and intolerant while the son is shown as guileless and sacrificial, Mr. Stevens treats both characters in exactly opposite ways! I have to confess that being an old fart myself these days, I think that Mr. Stevens' take is more on the money. Youth, by nature, tends to express itself in more loudly and emotional... (which can be at times necessary.) 'Benefit' has a particular poignancy for me. I first heard the whole album (I was already familiar with 'Teacher' due to its play on Philadelphia's progressive rock stations) when I was one of the patients in the Young People's Ward at Friends Hospital (a mental health facility). It was a record that, for some reason, was in heavy rotation along with Alice Cooper's 'Love It To Death and its 'Ballad of Dwight Fry! So whenever I hear it, I get a bit of a nostalgic lump in my throat!

Thanks Jeffrey! I also appreciate that our names pop up in at least 4 JT songs. I agree my perspective on these songs has shifted now that I have grown kids of my own. I am more sympathetic to the Cat Stevens portrayal, although it’s quite possible Ian’s father deserved a less than flattering characterization.

It's really unfortunate that so many really great songs get overplayed to the point that we are sick of hearing them. Then, when people try to make a list like this, a lot of amazing tunes (or albums) get left off because we have forgotten what It was like to hear them for the first time. It's really a shame, but that's the way it is. I feel like, if I tried to make a list like this, it wouldn't be accurate for that reason. Then, of course, if you're like me, you could fill up a whole list with only five bands because you couldn't choose which album from certain artists to include, and which to leave off. 😅 EDIT: Right after I wrote this, you put my thoughts into much better words. It's not fair to have too pick one album by an artist over about by them. And, yeah, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are great examples.

The first 3 albums sound best on the original UK LP’s, the first 2 cut by Tony Bridge at CBS, snd Zenyatta at Strawberry Mastering. The rest are the same Sterling and RL Masterdisk cuts for most of the world. Very important if you’re looking for the best these can ever sound. No tape drag on Roxanne, either.

Amazing entry Jeff. Your editing skills blow my mind. Funny, dry, so very you! You and I are probably closer in the world of beer than our Blue Ribbon friends. I love New Belgium, helped by me being, as you may now, a big Colorado, Denver fan, lover of, Scandinavian 😊 Love me some classic, old school, throat scratching IPA’s. My friend Sascha sent me some Russian River and it made my year! I did a 10.000 unique beers on Untappd video in December. Took me 12 years and quite a bit og beer traveling! I love that Van Halen album. Jeff. My dad was su surprised when he heard it, he hated most rock, but the fact Jan Van Halen, their dad, played clarinet, which my dad also did, on Big Bad Bill, touched his sensibilities 😊 Love that Monkees album so much too! Great discussion of this great album. I got it for Christmas 1965, eighth grade year. I remember how stunned I was by Side 2. Played it over and over. The two songs that blew me away the most, She Knows Me Too Well and Please Let Me Wonder. Was Brian really that driven by competition with the Beatles ,as you indicate? Did he talk about that a lot? The BB's music is so different. The emotional honesty in their lyrics, the insecurity, the fears, the highs, all really hit deep. (There is nothing weird about Don't Hurt My Little Sister, Jeff. That is a normal emotion of a big brother who cares about his little sister. )

And yes, I'm very aware of his music. When I was in college you had to like him if you wanted to be cool. I even saw him live up here in Toronto. In the long run I just can't listen to that anymore, he's just too precious, in his singing and his image, it's kinda sickening.

( US Edition , the way I heard it growing up ) Pink Floyd : Dark Side of the Moon. ( Any Colour You Like is often overlooked on this album , it's killer ) Jethro Tull : Aqualung. Hi Jeff! All Things is great, albeit bloated.....not sure I would consider it my fave solo Fab album, but it's certainly close to the top Led Zep 4.....yes, it lives up to its legend, but the burnout factor on some of those songs still exists. Pet Sounds......Brian Wilson's influential masterpiece. Who's Next......an essential album in music history. Grace is an interesting pick. Ghost in the Machine is likable, but it wouldn't be in my top ten album list. Yellow Brick.....like most double albums, there is a killer single record hiding inside. Having said that, GYBR is without question one of the best releases ever. Single or double. Let it Bleed.....Exile is my fave Stones, but LIB sounds like a sexy, demonic novel. White Album......speaking of novels.......it's a textbook of rock's past, present and future. Dark Side is Floyd at its peak IMO......and it started to go downhill slowly but steadily after that. Abbey Road.....Revolver is my favorite Beatles album, Abbey Road is in the runner up slot. Great video once again!

Thanks John! Sometimes hard to separate my emotional connection to these albums and objectively rate the merits of the music but this was a fun list all the same.

Hi Jeff!! this one was a very eclectic and cool one from Tears for Fear --> the cure --> Floyd --> the Stones --> Yes --> Sabbath. To me my favorite BS album has to be "Master of Reality". Maybe you should do a series "Album you have to listen with Headphones", lol....... cheers and be well

Eclectic why? They are all Rock bands, for the most part, with a career spanning over 40 years. Eclectic would be if he put Hip-Hop/Rap, Jazz, R&B, etc. Just a normal old man's list.

HI Jeff: I never want the remixed All Things Must Pass to become the standard. I heartily agree on the Phil Spector production on it. A simply perfect Gen X Top Ten! I loved it. 💯. Rock Always! - Heather
