    Working a job, outside of motherhood, even part time, is challenging especially when you have two young children AND a husband that travels for work and cannot be there to give you relief. It does place a huge burden on you. And it really doesn't matter how much or how little either of you make financially in your jobs. What really matters is the hours and the amount and kinds of responsibilities you each have to carry. If he gets to unwind in the evening without the demands of children, doing the wash, and handling social obligations, and gets off on the weekends, and can take sick days without worrying about caring for 2 little ones, but you cannot do any of that, then you in fact have the more demanding job. Give yourself time to get used to the new routine of a part-time job and find ways to balance your life again. Hopefully, your husband will help pick up some of the home responsibilities now that you've added a part-time job to your own schedule. Too often, women wind up picking up a job outside the home and are still expected to do everything else. And I speak from a really positive experience where I was the one making a higher income and my husband was tremendously supportive. We carried the home burdens equally. Our paychecks didn't come into the equation.

    I think W&N has the best version. Without the brown influence, it's too much like Sap Green. If you want a variety look into Raw Umber!

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    I really love W&N's other PR206 that they call Permanent Alizarin Crimson! It's much redder and brighter than the Brown Madder. I agree the disagreement between Daniel Smith and Qor's names for the earth quins is super confusing.

    Apparently they have changed the formula and these are vegan now. I just got the 48 set, haven't opened it yet, and feel guilty. Probably about half the colors aren't very lightfast. Wondering whether I should keep them. Have you ended up using them much? I can see how they behave differently than regular watercolors; I know they are formulated to be used on japanese papers like sumi paper and etegami postcards. I was surprised at how they backran so much in your swatches!

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    I have Van Gogh PBk11, which is a little underwhelming , although I ought to play with it more. I love the Mjello Cobalt Black, had to pay a pretty penny for it in the states -- wish Jackson's would carry the full line, although the prices seem to have shot up lately even there. And I do have a small tube of DS hematite which I *always forget about!*

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    I have a pan of the Schmincke Blueish version, which I got in a square palette, and a small tube of W&N. The Schmincke seems to have less value range at least on your swatch here. Mostly I use them for painting cast shadows from fruit. The one thing I wish is that we could have seen the Payne's and Indigo swatches together! I guess I'll just have to look at my own LOL

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    I just have Qor, which has such a great value range, and also a handmade genuine indigo just for pigment nerding. So odd that Schmincke combined phthalo with the genuine (I saw this in a later Chinese palette too, perhaps a Rubens brand.) I guess they figure when the original fades away you still have a bit of blue there LOL

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    I ordered some open stock as well, after getting the same pure pigment set. I got Violet Lake because it *used* to be Perelyne Violet, but the tube I got was a mix. I actually got a refund from the seller, because of the discrepancy, but to be fair it is nice. So you were right on thinking it looks like Perelyne Violet! I also have the PR207, the PR209, the PY138, the PB60, and that amazing Cobalt Black. I have gotten the speckling too, with different brands -- mostly with certain pigments which are extremely fine. The worst speckling paint I have is W&N Aqua Green Phthalo, the special one that's not got a pigment number because it's an automotive pigment. It speckles horribly! In fact I've mostly experienced that with phthalos.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    This is making me want to bust out my Mjello Prussian. I also have DS and Qor, and a tube of M. Graham gouache in this color. I don't know why I don't use it more in sketchbook.

    Oh the DaVinci "New Gold" (replacing the Quin Gold hue) is PR101 and PY83 (dialyride yellow). Definitely an unusual mix, surprising they decided to remove the PY150 entirely. Interesting that they don't even sell a PY83, why not just use the Hansa Yellow Deep? Maybe to increase the mystique or make it harder to mix LOL

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    DaVinci is the most underrated paint in the US. Oldest US watercolors; a family owned company, and the CEO will answer your emails if you write through the website. Love the option of 8ml, 15ml and 37ml tubes, and the fact that they show the pigment numbers in their thumbnails. I wish I had discovered them earlier in my watercolor journey! Your palette and mine are very similar :) I believe their lavender is actually made with PV15, Ultramarine Violet, you might have a typo on your swatch.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    My first was Schmincke's -- and I liked it fine until I tried DS and Qor and Mjello! I agree the Sennelier looks beautiful. I also have DaVinci PR202 and it's a bit of a letdown. I ended up with a pan of Schmincke PV42 which was fun to try, but is weakly tinting so annoying to use. It looks from some swatching I saw on another channel that Daniel Smith's version is much stronger. I do think it's slightly less lightfast than PR122 -- but all reds and pinks and purples are prone to fading worse than other hues, sadly!

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    You are right that it's so important to understand pigments. I was watching Jenna Rainey swatch the entire Maimeri line earlier. She has over 330k subscribers and 5 watercolor books out. She couldn't pronounce Quinacradone 🤣😂 in fact she was mystified by how to pronounce many of the pigment names, like Pyrrole. She of course didn't discuss the pigments at all. Oh, and she confused the price series, with the lightfastness rating. She also had health concerns about cad and cobalt pigments, but didn't know cerulean is a cobalt. The concerns about cobalts are more environmental, unless you are drinking your paint water. I couldn't finish watching!

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    I love the original Alizarin and these are some of my faves. I do love the Mjello PR176 so much, as well as the W&N PR206 -- what a shame that pigment is discontinued. The W&N pigment is so different to other PR206s. The Rosa is really different, because it's Napthol Red, it's also too bad Napthols are not more lightfast. I also like the DaVinci -- although it doesn't swatch out as well as others, but it paints fine.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    My all time favorite is DaVinci's Cobalt Turquoise, and it is SUCH A VALUE for those of us in the US. It's not any weaker than the more expensive brands, and I like that it's bluer than the Daniel Smith, which I find too green. Lindsay Weirich used to love the Lukas, but observed the same thing you did on her latest tube -- it got chalky and they changed the pigment they previously used. I guess Sakura bought Lukas a while back.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    It's not your water -- the M. Graham quins, phthalos and Nickel Azo Yellow/Green all flocculate. I learned just recently that most brands use additives to prevent that, but I guess M. Graham chooses to not do that. It looks bad in swatches, but I find that in actual painting, I never notice. M. Graham is the brand that I most changed opinions about -- between the stickyness and flocculation, at first I was not into it. But now they are one of my very favorites! Davinci Rose Madder Deep used to have PR88 in it as well, but it is no longer noted on the website. So I guess that means they now have THREE shades of pure PV19 pure rose pink (the others being Red Rose Deep and Permanent Rose Quinacradone). I'm kind of off Daniel Smith since the Primatek thing, but I do really love theirs. I also love Mjello!

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    Naples Yellow always reminds me of Irit Landgraf, who loves the Schmincke and also the Lukas Naples Yellow Reddish. That PY216 is one I don't have, and seeing it here makes me want it now! The Qor is unappealing, but would be a good base for olive skin tones, which I guess there'd be a lot of in Naples?? LOL

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    The PY42 is the synthetic version. Early in my watercoloring, I bought Schmincke Transparent Yellow Ochre PY42 and hated it so much. It was similar to the White Nights ones you showed. It's just a bad paint (or maybe it was a bad batch, but I saw someone else trustworthy hate it too). It made me hate earth yellows for a long time. I bought the Daniel Smith Monte Amiata Raw Sienna but never knew what to do with it, probably put off by my Schmincke experience. Then, I got the Mjello Pure Pigment 24 set and found myself surprised to enjoy the Yellow Ochre #2. Then a Euro friend wanted to try DaVinci Raw Sienna and so I got us a tube to share. I fell in love. I really like the earth yellows now especially for painting fruit. Earth yellows are also amazing to mix with phthalo green for landscapes or flower stems. The DaVinci Raw Sienna Deep is really their name for Transparent Yellow Oxide. It also mixes nice greens. But I far prefer their regular Raw Sienna from PBr7. I also have their Gold Ochre and it's really lovely. I heard you say in another video you didn't have your Mjello tubes anymore, did you not care for them?

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    I have the Schmincke Venetian Red, the DaVinci Light Red, and the M. Graham Terra Rosa (which is their Indian Red). I always find them a bit hard to use. Looking at your comparison I realize the Schmincke is a bit easier because it either doesn't rewet as well or it's not quite as pigmented. But in this case that seems like a good thing!

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    Again, very helpful comparison of these earth colors that may have different names but are similar in hue! I have the DaVinci Violet Iron Oxide and I love it; it's not so strong that it's hard to mix like some paints (like their Light Red or M. Graham's Terra Rosa). Love the Mission Gold Red Brown, it's more of a Burnt Sienna than what they called Burnt Sienna.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    It seems like burnt sienna has become more orange over the years. I have an ancient tube of Grumbacher Academy made from PBR7 which is honestly my favorite hue of it. I think it's similar to the Blue Ridge. DSs is pretty classic, but W&Ns is like a burnt orange. And much as I love Mjello, you can never really trust the Asian brands to do earth tones the way we interpret them in the west. It's really a Transparent Brown Oxide.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    Heh. I'm almost certain Paul Rubens mixed up the names of their "Umber" with "Burnt Sienna." I like Paul Rubens as an affordable brand, but they ALWAYS seem to make major typos in their pigment charts. And in this case, apparently the names. I always imagine they are creating the pigment charts in a burning building, and are hurriedly trying to finish with no proofreading, before evacuating 🔥🏢

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    Very helpful comparison. I'm very partial to the dark raw umber. I have the Daniel Smith, which is quite good, but this comparison has convinced me to buy the Qor to replace my nearly empty tube (I'm in the US so it's more reasonable). I just find when painting landscapes that trees, branches, rocks, dirt etc are always very cool browns that tend towards grey. I suppose others mix warmer browns with ultramarine, but it just seems so useful to start with the cooler color. I notice that the burnt umber I got from Schmincke is so cool, it's closer to the DS raw than it is to burnt. So that's also a nice option. Umber always dries very hard in the pan, so I find it helpful to add a drop or two of glycerine. It also makes very hard and dry pastels.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    Very nice comparison. Just like you I really favor the Daniel Smith and also Denise's Green. If I understand correctly, the original Hooker's was a mix of old-school gamboge and prussian blue. So yeah, not so lightfast. Some more modern versions from the 80s used PG8, but that turns out to be not so lightfast either. But a gorgeous pigment, true. I know Qor is expensive for you, but they make a wonderful Hooker's that goes so deep, it's PB60, PY150 and PR122.

    The new DaVinci formula, called "New Gold," strangely does not contain PY150?! It's PR101 and PY83. I haven't seen it in person yet, but their swatch seems quite orange. If you peel the Jackson's watercolor label back you can find the Sennelier label underneath, according to one CZcamsr...

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 Před měsícem

    Great comparison, especially considering how many different ways there are to mix this color, and now the pigment changes. I never had the DS. I do have a couple handmade half pans and they were quite different than I expected - like yours, quite orange and sort of dull compared to those made with PY150!

    I just found your video as I wanted to learn more about the 18 set watercolour one I got, which I love. I didn't understand the warm/ cool colours (only just been learning about colour theory and your video really helped me to identify my paints. Do you know if any of these paints have granulate in them? I heard if the number contains a G it does, so does that mean Viiridian is one for example? Also what do the stars mean? I love these paints so much, I've ordered the 50 set one too. My 4 year loves painting with my little set as well, and it was a cheap way to get me started in water colour too.

    tbh i think this is a wonderful set for beginners but also for intermediate artists who dont want to spend a lot of money. in germany where i am, these are even available on amazon which a lot of people have access to. to me, their colors are quite appealing but of course thats always personal preference :D you do get a lot of paint though, that could be a real big plus for people who want a bit of a bang for their buck. and this last thing is a bit dumb but...i just looove that yellow tin. i love that shade of yellow and if i ever run out of these colors i will 100% still use that tin. its gorgeous!!

    Thank you for this information that has been waiting for me to discover 2 yrs later and so good for me to see. I am 75 and still leaning so much about this art form. Watercolor is my fav, though at my age I have been privileged to learn oh, so many crafts. Thank you for your opinion on this brand. I an awaiting my first order of 100 ArtEcho from Amazon that I chose for price and hoping for the dry coloration. Best of wishes to you. I am on to your next part of this ArtEcho Watercolour Review.

    Are you the same Mina as the Knitting Expat channel? If not, you have a doppelganger.

    What sort of pencil was that black one you used to draw birds?

    It would be better if you had written the brands on each box, with a bit bigger letters, Icould barely tell which was which,most of them, couldn't tell at all. Thank you for all the swatches,they really help!!

    I like the Da Vinci and Daniel Smith burnt umbers the best. They don't seem as warm as some of the other brands, and the color payout is great.
