I use these colours when doing botanical work to give depth to shadows in red flowers, or when drawing or painting bark on trees. Some trees have this red brown shiny bark. Love the sound of rain.

I have the Winsor Newton version, I use it for shadows in portrait painting.

Again, very helpful comparison of these earth colors that may have different names but are similar in hue! I have the DaVinci Violet Iron Oxide and I love it; it's not so strong that it's hard to mix like some paints (like their Light Red or M. Graham's Terra Rosa). Love the Mission Gold Red Brown, it's more of a Burnt Sienna than what they called Burnt Sienna.

This is one of my favorites. I have it in a few brands. Recently, I used it, yellow ochre, buff titanium and paynes grey in a painting to clear my palette, and it ended up looking like a post apocalyptic impressionist landscape…super weird, and I’d never done something in an impressionist style…

I have the DS Lunar Earth which granulates heavily and was hoping Lunar Red Rock would be the same, but it doesn't seem to be the case here.
I got the White Nights Caput Mortuum and it has never left my palette, it's great to use as it is for animal paintings. I don't mix it that much, as it tends to overpower mixes.

I don't have Caput Mortuum, but of the six swatches the Winsor Newton looks the best to me. The two Roman Szmal look very cloudy compared to the others, but maybe that's a camera thing? I have Lunar Red Rock which I use instead of Indian Red because it's less opaque and more granulating. I like @silkspinner's suggestion to use CM as a red shadow, think it could work with LRR too. Thanks for sharing your swatching and thoughts!

Fun review! I feel like the PBr25 might fall between PR206 and PO48. It's a bit duller, but I still like it.

I have the Rosa and White Nights Caput Mortuum and I really enjoy them a lot as is or in combinations. I too like the ones which lean more violet. The RS one is really granulating, I think this one would be really fun in mixes.
Video idea: would be fun if you'd make videos with granulating mixes! Like trying to replicate schmincke or RS granulating colors.

It's so interesting that you like the DS PBr25 because it isn't shiny in masstone, when the reason I don't like it is because mine is! I really like the Rosa Gallery version - Royal Brown. I also like the Rosa Gallery Caput Mortuum, it's more violet and granulates properly and is beautiful in mixes! ☺️
I like the mixes with my White Nights Caput Mortuum, but my Sennelier one behaves strangely. It dries sort of milky which affects other mixes, but maybe that's just the batch I have.
