I think it's fair to say after the past few years of utter anti-customer rubbish from Synology that Computex finally served to announce to the public what Synology actually thinks about Prosumer/Consumer/SMB users and customers ....they are getting out of the market to chase Enterprise shadows where they are going to find out all about real competition. Only DSM keeps them relevant and they will screw that up soon too ... if you literally (like me) use a NAS for network attached storage DSM has zero advantages over anything else ..... My replacement for the DS1821+ as a frontline NAS will be the new Lockstor Gen3 10 bay and the DS will move to backup duty. Synology have lost me ....

So I’m guessing you can use your nas to wake up other devices on your lan? Can you send a ssh command to the nas for it to do this?

Christ, if setting up things like reverse IP, SPF, DKIM and DMARC are the only reason *not* to set up your own mail server, then I'd say *go ahead and build your own mail server* ! You can't have Amazon, Google or whoever knowing every new customer you authenticate via email. No knowledge without responsibility. Do I need to consider anything regarding snapshots when backing up entire directories with visible #Snapshot-Folders externally using Hyper Backup? I don't want the snapshot files to be backed up additionally!

Core dead? No. It's jails or "Apps" are. Its still the best option for redundancy.

Port forwarding doesn't work if your ISP has you on CGNAT... You need to get off CGNAT and onto a dedicated IP, even if it's not static.

Again, great video. While creating rules, you must select the interface(s) to apply them to. If I want to block DSM from ALL over the world except the US, I will use your example and applied to my BONDed interface. Now, I as travel, I want to be able to access DSM from ALL over the world as long as I connect to DSM's VPN Server. I guess I will have then one restrictive rule under BOND 1 and one permissive one (or at least no one blocking) for DSM over the VPN interface. Is that correct?

Ah, I noticed that happening to my new one at home. Just sad little brute force attempts. I set it to fuck up twice, banned. It went on for about a week and then stopped altogether.

@spacerex it would be helpful if you could do a followup on smart attributes in light of this functionality being removed from storage manager. Am no longer able to view numerical results of the smart tests and would great if you could show any work arounds.

When I added the country rules, I could not get in with my DDNS subdomain, only local IP. I had to allow Taiwan in addition to USA, and then it worked. Since the Google-Squarespace domain sale, I've had to use Synology's DDNS service, which server is based in Taiwan...

My take, Quick connect is great for login in from a browser or phone app. If you use dive in your laptop I would suggest connecting through tailscale as it's much faster than Quick connect. My case: I use my laptop a lot outside my home and I need to access my files with good speed. Tailscale can do that and Quick connect is just too slow. If you are sharing a file with someone you will have to do Quick connect as it's easy and you can just create links.

I've been thinking about this for when I get a NAS. But I didn't like the idea of connecting it to a device that has access to the internet, i.e. your wifi router. As it's been a headache about all the security things you'd need to implement it, etc. And I realized something, that I could just buy a separate wifi router and connect that to the NAS to where it's not connected to anything that's connected to the internet and then not have to worry so much about security regarding internet connections.

I don't know if NAS's have this as I haven't upgraded to one yet, but plan to. Is if NAS's came with built in Wifi transmitters. Where you could connect to it wirelessly without having to connect it to your internet router.

I suggest disabling QuickConnect after installing TailScale on both DSM and all other devices. Very secure, faster, no need to change your router ports, no need for port forwarding.

I still am angry my isp router isn't grounded.

I'm trying to backup an encrypted volume and it's telling me to unlock my volume first but I don't want to do that, is there no way to backup an encrypted volume?

What I would love to know (slight change of topic) is…. It possible to set up Synology Drive to use reverse proxy? It will use quick connect, but it is so slow because it does through the relay.
