    I bought a Synology DSj120 back in January. I got it working but it was really slow. BlackMagic read write gave me 7mbs, I had to wait for tech support to set up a case # and then call me. Well I am at work and not able to be at home waiting for a tech to help me out. I returned it. I am sure I did not know what all the setting were for and the speed was due to me. I was used to an Apple Time Capsule that died. Can you use this with a mac and Time Machine? What are the expected read and write speeds?

    With the demise of the Apple Time Capsules a few years ago, that left a number of my friends and family without automatic time machine backups of their Macs. I told them to get a small external drive and plug it in every day or week to do a back up, but most people don't do it. So to me, this seems like it would be a great Time Capsule replacement if it can be easily set up to do Time Machine backups. It would be worth it just for that. When you spoke briefly about the SMB section you kind of breezed by the fact that it is set up to do Time Machine if this is enabled. Can you please do a quick tutorial on how to set one of these up to act solely as a Time Machine back up? I think you would be doing many of us a service in doing that. Thanks!

    I’m really torn whether I should get this or a DS224+ for my parents. They would have zero intention of learning about the ins-and-out of the NAS software so the simplicity factor is meaningless. I almost feel a DS224+ is the far better option so I can setup SHR and a VPN server to remotely fix anything that needs it.

      I am probably your parent’s age and somewhat technically experienced. Bought a DS223j 4 days ago. Spent the last 4 days and over 20 hours of frustration plus many CZcams videos trying to get it set up and working only to have it crash. Now can’t even log into it. Save your parents the frustration. A SSD and cloud service would be easiest, seems like beestaion might also be easy but I hate buying first generation products.

    This is a recipe for disaster. Before I had my Synology DS920+, I used an Apple time capsule for my backups and files. I became dependent on it without understanding drive lifespan and failures. They will likely put their files in this drive without regard for backup or redundancies.
    This will do the same thing for users as Apple does with the time capsule. As users fill up the drive up to 3T, they will see later that it will be hard to manage when the drive life ends. They will need a cloud-based backup or migrate their data by buying another Bee Station. This second alternative will entail technical knowledge unlikely to a Bee Station user.

      Yeah, I think the thought here is the files live on your phone/device and are backed up to this box. Then if you wipe your phone, etc, you can easily restore. And, if the drive dies, you typically would still have the data on your phone/device. For most home users this is likely fine, but yes I agree, I don't think we are the target market here.

  • @TingleCowboy
    @TingleCowboy Před 3 měsíci +1

    The device is above all an easy way to lose your data. However, this is not just a problem with this device, but with all NAS devices in general. With the more professional devices, it is actually assumed that the user installs a UPS themselves. But with this simple device, the rather inexperienced user is guaranteed not to do anything like that. And even if he does, I don't see an option here that would shut down the BeeStation in the event of a power outage if the UPS battery runs out at some point. This means that the data is on a hard drive that is constantly active and is not connected to a fail-safe power supply. In the event of a power failure or accidental unplugging, the hard drive can always be damaged. Any laptop that has an external hard drive connected to it is much, much safer in this regard.
    Synology should have installed a small battery here that would at least ensure a safe shutdown in the event of a power failure.

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  Před 3 měsíci +1

      This power loss issue normally comes from the RAID5 write whole, which in this case is not possible due to it being only a single drive. So your COW BTRFS should pretty much protect you from anything power loss wise

    • @TingleCowboy
      @TingleCowboy Před 3 měsíci

      @@SpaceRexWill As far as I know, it's not just RAID 5 that is affected by so-called write holes. Sure, a single drive is not a RAID, but I'm not sure if COW is enough to ensure data integrity in all cases. And to be honest, I find it totally incomprehensible that almost every electronic device, no matter how small, now has a battery, except a NAS.

    I don't understand why this device gets so many good words. I'm afraid Synology doesn't see what happened with WD and online access to their devices. Is this what awaits BeeStation users? YES! Maybe not today or tomorrow. But a ddos or other attack is only a matter of time. It is more than certain that this will happen and you will not get access to your data. And enabling access via LAN, which is available as an option, is BAD!
