A ride on a Midland Red S12

This is a short ride from Wythall to the Maypole on BMMO S12 3744, NHA744. Midland Red were pioneers in using underfloor engines, and S12 is an early design - it's hard to see on the video, but the hinged entrance door isn't at the edge of the bus at the bottom of the steps but behind the driver as one enters the saloon. 3744 has a tricky crash gearbox - I omitted the part where the driver lost...
A Bristol RE drive through Warrington

I took my Bristol RE, North Western 299A, to an event at the North West Museum of Road Transport, St Helens. We pick up the action in Newton-le-Willows High Street and follow my progress through Warrington to t...

An RE ramble through the Peak District, September 2023
zhlédnutí 102Před 10 měsíci
This is just a pleasant drive through the countryside with the accompaniment of a tuneful Bristol RE gearbox. The camera is a little low (to be more stable) so you can't really see much outside - that's not really the point, and in any case I've included captions as we reach locations along the route. It's a relaxing watch and an even more relaxing listen, the nearest thing I've done to an ASMR...

To Manchester, by Bristol RE

In August 2019 I took my Bristol RE, North Western 299A, on a trip to Manchester. 299A was still under restoration at the time and was full of tools and tins of paint so a little bit rattly, but there's plenty of gearbox and axle whine to keep the Bristol RE fan happy for nearly an hour.

The start of the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester 'Transpo 50' cavalcade, 19 October 2019. I was piloting Rochdale 235. Yes I know some of the buses are smoky - we'd only just set off and the engines were cold. With these old design of engines, smoke is inevitable until they warm up - even idling doesn't really do the trick, they have to be used under load for a few minutes and then the s...

North Western 299 coughs into life
zhlédnutí 1,1KPřed 5 lety
North Western 299 hadn't been started for some weeks, and it was a cold day (though bright), so it was slightly reluctant to start. And Gardner engines are notorious for being smoky when cold, although this soon clears when they warm up. So please don't tell me the engine is broken or worn! Once warmed and on the road, in fact 299 produces no visible smoke at all.
Moving trolleybuses at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester

In December 2018, the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester spent a day moving vehicles to improve displays and position buses in the workshop to receive attention. Two of the most rare and interesting moves were those of our trolleybuses, Manchester and 1250 which have not ventured outdoors for many years. The moves inside the Museum were performed pushing by hand: the transfer from upper hal...
299's first test run
zhlédnutí 302Před 6 lety
Today, I took North Western 299 on its first test run since I bought it last year. It's in dire need of a wash, and there are several faults to rectify (speedo, water overpressurising) and in particular - and audible in this video - a slipping flywheel. But it goes, and rather well at that - we clocked 45 mph with plenty more oomph left, on a first test run we didn't push our luck. But the brak...

Lovely bus! What engine is it please?
@@garyglover1969 hi, it’s a Gardner 6HLX.
At last a video on board a Midland Red S model. It's taken a long time and what a joy to travel on a true Midland Red for so many people living outside double-decker operations. Apart from Shrewsbury and Kidderminster most of my bus travel was on S6 and S10,12s. Thank you for this video and many more, please. Note how little rattling in the inside is a lesson for modern bus engineers as they rattle and bang like an old galvanised bucket full of nails.....bloody disgraceful considering the unit costs.☺☺☺☺

Victorian era steam was art with horsepower.
Oh hey, looks like it's the engines from the "Steamboy" anime!
Love to see the giants working. The UK, where the steam age began.
What does the small thing that spins around on top of a lot of steam engines do? It looks like a wind meter. Not sure how to describe it.
It’s called a flyball govern aka a centrifugal throttle.
@@timmiller9666 If I'm not mistaken, the governor is where the term "balls out" originates. If the balls are extended all the way out it is going as fast as it can.
@@sculpturebyjoelrwashing628 And 'balls to the wall" must mean they've flown right orf.
@@984francisballs to the wall may refer to a similar governor being used as an emergency brake in early elevators. The balls would go to the wall to lock the elevator in the shaft or something?
@@sculpturebyjoelrwashing628 The engine is going as fast as the governor *allows* it to run. It can be set to run at any speed the operator desires.(within reason).
Are there any looms left?
Sadly, no - the entire mill has been demolished except for the steam engine house.
Ellenroad didn't have looms, it was a Spinning Mill.
Such magnificent sounds :) gorgeous
Had a ride a few years ago at the museum. It's like something I've never heard before, as unique as an Ailsa and you have captured it perfectly.

Wonderful sound quality - almost as good as being there. Thanks!
Love the 6LX sound - it is harmonious with the drop centre axle and SCG box. A tribute to the restorers is the relative lack of body rattle, unfortunately very loud in ECW bodies
Loved this ! The paint on the 218 Ashton bus . Beautiful .
Not bad for a 6LX RE, as due to their lower revs Lawrence Gardner,s 6LX lacks the vocal repertoire of a Preston Prima Donna you should know what I mean, yes cats and kittens ,A 680 LEYLAND!!! One Hundred Fifty Prancing Preston Ponies high on weed. A 680 RE sends bolts of electricity up my spine just to hear that Prima Donna,s booming exhaust rasp ,the SCG gearbox, and OH OH!!! those screaming transfer gears as backing vocals when the driver Mike Ede mashes the loud pedal.
Beautiful bus!
Great seeing the vehicles but if they are concerned about safety they should have one person giving instructions and hand signals, having two doing their own thing is a recipe for disaster.
One person was in charge, the other was acting as the eyes and ears for the Matador as visibility from its cab is poor and it’s too loud to hear instructions - so his job was to replay the instructions to the Matador driver and monitor the angle of the tow bar in the Matador’s towing eye.
,
Great vid! The Matador looks stunning!

Very nice, Paul - what did mount your camera on?.
Robert Tarling it was just mounted on a fairly sturdy tripod, but set with its legs opened to the maximum extent so that two of the feet almost touched the sides of the bus, with the third leg in the gangway.

A very nice upload, that interior looks lovely. sounds like a pre-select gearbox too.
Yes definitely a "fluid flywheel' (pre-select) Regent! A manual Regent has a higherpitched sound.

Are these Trolleys New Flyers?
Yes, they are.
Lovely shot, lucky that you had to be up early. I got it on the tour at Stafford with the 68 leading.
Almost began to sound like a Deltic!
I WAS a Rochdale conductor in the late 60s! This particular one is showing 17t, a Chesham Avenue turn back. And nearly everyone that got on tried to book through! Nobody ever read the front Destination board! Sigh!
Fantastic combination of engine/transmission sound; like nothing I've ever heard (in a bus anyway!)
in the late sixties living in Hyde Cheshire I remember an Experimental North Western Daimler with this engine fitted. I always waited in hope when I could catch a bus it was the one with this engine.. I was about 7 years old and I could tell the difference with the sound of the normal Daimler s and the one with this engine in.
A great sounding bus here although I am a bit young to fully remember these beauties. I have rode on some of these when they were still in service back in the 70's. I have ridden on 2976 and the old gal 1107 at Wythall on their trips. Great video of a well presented and kept preserved Guy
A bus from my youth as well
Great video of a great beast of fleetline & it is great to see this beauty back on the road after being a static display at Wythall for 25 years
