  • 56 was the unique Daimler CRC-36 with Northern Counties body that was supplied to Walsall in 1968, under the aegis of famous experimenter R Edgley Cox. I took my bus to Wythall for a very pleasant day's trip and had the opportunity to take a ride on 56. She is a credit to David Taylor and the team who have restored her, after a very long period battling with its little foibles.
To say that the effect of riding on 56 is a little 'agricultural' would be an understatement! To get the full effect, turn up the volume until the sensation is deafening, then open your window and ask someone to run a diesel engine and point its exhaust towards you. It can't have been popular with Walsall drivers or indeed garage staff, but I'm very glad it's still around.
I took a journey of just over twenty minutes and I've put pretty much the whole journey on this video - on the basis that I haven't found any other rides in 56 on CZcams I thought I'd share the whole experience.

Had a ride a few years ago at the museum. It's like something I've never heard before, as unique as an Ailsa and you have captured it perfectly.

Fantastic combination of engine/transmission sound; like nothing I've ever heard (in a bus anyway!)

My first "ride" in this fascinating machine. Always wondered what it sounded like. Thanks for posting.

in the late sixties living in Hyde Cheshire I remember an Experimental North Western Daimler with this engine fitted. I always waited in hope when I could catch a bus it was the one with this engine.. I was about 7 years old and I could tell the difference with the sound of the normal Daimler s and the one with this engine in.

Ohjust listen to that fully-rated Cummins V6-200 - last time I sampled her was down at Bishops Stortford with Hale Brothers. Glad to hear the revvs being taken up well-essential for that PT fuel injection system to function

This Cummins vee engine was also known as the "VIM," and was one of the very first such engine models Cummins ever built, being first introduced in 1961. Here in the USA, it was available in the 1963-69 Ford F-series heavy-duty trucks (the 850/950/1000 series) until they were replaced for 1970 by the Louisville series, which then came with Detroit Diesel 6-71 and 8V71 engines.
