My name is Jon. I am a pen maker and love figuring things out; I have been turning professionally for ~4 years now. I have a strong background in education; (10,000+hrs and still going). My goal is to meet people and share ideas as well as share my experience of turning on the lathe and how this has helped me significantly. Turning is my therapy.

Maverick and Stratified Swag
This was an impromptu video if you are familiar with our stratified fountain pens then this will look familiar, this package has goodies that we wanted to check out and see how the quality was and see how they fit. There are some shirts and other accessories that we wanted to see in person.
If you attend the DC pen show or the Orlando pen show in the near future then there is a good chance you will be seeing these in person. Maybe you can even feel the fabric 😄.
It was mentioned last year that we should make these available to others that really would like to stand out in a vibrant colorful way! I do also understand this is not for everyone and you will need to be a brave individual to rock some of these things.
Check out the items we (myself and Abbie) have designed on our Etsy.

In this video I have condensed a 3 hour live stream into a 3-4 minute video. These forever pencils are a really awesome project to turn for friends, family, and maybe even teachers. Everything is replaceable which is a part of what makes the project so customizable. Turning on the lathe is a wonderful time; it is productive and challenging. • Jet 1221 VS Lathe - amzn.to/3HtXWf0 • Lathe Stand - ...

In this video I am turning one of Abbie's blanks called lucky birthday. There are three total pens being made here and it is interesting to see the difference between both the orientation of the blank that you are working with and getting t...

What lathe are you using ? Kindly indicate . I am currently using a wood lathe
Hey there, the wood lathe I am using is a Jet 12-21VS and the metal lathe that I use is a Little Machine Shop (LMS) Model 7350 HiTorque Mini Lathe. -Jon
@@maverickworkshop Thanks
Hey, Man, great Pen! Thanks for the video!! I hope to be fully kit less one day lol. However, I did notice that your finishing process is fairly tedious! Mine is also but purely out of a spirit of exchange of expertise, I am curious if you have tried the wet sanding pads that go up to around 16,000 grit? I use them on all my pens and with a good sanding technique, the only polishing I do at the end is a single application of Meguiars Ultimate Car compound. It works wonders on acrylic and reliable gives you a glass finish every time. Not to mention that the pads last forever (As long as you dont sand metal or raw wood lol) and a big bottle of meguiars is only $11, it is a very inexpensive method and outshines every other technique I have tried including the graded compounds and paper applications. Regardless though, everything about your video was a pleasant experience! Great Job Sir!!!
Thank you! I have the micro mesh pads and that goes to a very high grit. The way we do it now is buying large sheets of wet/dry sand paper and cut it to size. You are not wrong about it being tedious though. Acrylic is a harder material than most resins including the one we use, Alumilite, so it has some pros and cons as does everything. Thanks for the input. Have a good day, Jon
Hermoso trabajo. Muy buenas herramientas
Thank you.
Hello 👋🏾 I wanted to get my own mini metal lather to start tuning pens and I was wondering what will be your recommendation should I get one of those Vevor lathe or you have any good one that will help
I have a long answer for this question but I would think about budget, space, and capability. If you don’t have a wood lathe I would consider how to solve the sanding and polishing part. Other than that I would make sure there is enough workspace between centers. I can really go on a while on this but those are some things I’d consider. Mine is a lathe from LMS. Jon
Dang it sorry I missed the stream. I’ll still give it a watch.
Hey, no worries man. I did finish the pens from Friday, and that oparex is looking mighty nice.
@@maverickworkshop I can’t wait to see
Thanks so much for illuminating the process..I have done kit pens, and seen folks use taps manually on a wood lathe. The metal lathe is next level and critical for consistency and repeatability....if you do another talking about the metal lathe and tools for threading, tenon cutting would be of great interest...Awesome video thanks for showing your process...live long and prosper..
Hey there, I appreciate that. Some people are annoyed that I didn’t explain what I was doing 🤣. But I wasn’t trying to explain exactly what it was that I was doing…instead I was just sharing my process and the way that I do it. I have been doin live streams and I’ve really been enjoying it. So I will most likely continue doing them. I will try to be better about giving some more lead time before going live again. -Jon
@maverickworkshop yep no problem happy you filmed your process..it is a lot of work..I have made a lot of music videos to introduce people to.playing various folk instruments... so I really appreciate your efforts
Enjoying you video.
Thank you so much! Glad to hear it.
If you don't have any use for them then maybe a jeweler or watchmaker near you could use them. Speaking from experience but not everyone uses them.
That’s a good idea, thanks for the suggestion. -Jon
Wow I'm so glad I found your channel hoping it grows and going to check out more of your videos! I'm a watchmaker but learned how to use a lathe for small parts and want to make bigger things like pens and chess pieces!! Really awesome stuff to see here
I appreciate that! A chess set would be a really challenging project to enjoy forever. Watchmaking sounds fun, you must have some good eyes and steady hands. -Jon
Metal lathe camera audio is a little wonky
Thank you for letting me know, one of my other cameras was picking up unfortunately.
i have been interested in custom flashlights etc, and beads as well. do you think a simple "harbor freight" lathe would do to begin with beads? i do know tooling for different metals is tough and costly, however it seems to begin this way may be the step
would also like to know the mess and cleanup process as i would put a simple lathe to start in my finished basement
Custom flashlights sounds pretty neat!!**short answer: yes you can make beads with a HF lathe. **Longer answer: if you are talking about the HF metal lathe it may work for your purpose but the workspace (between centers) is really small. If you were talking about the wood lathe… I had the HF wood lathe and a Jet at the same time and there was a significant difference in the fit and finish of everything. -Jon
Turning is a mess, it also can make a significant amount of dust. From wood chips to swarf (resin noodles) and sanding (dust) it can be messy and even harmful if you are not wearing appropriate equipment. On the plus side it sweeps and vacuums really easily off of hard surfaces (not carpet). Hope that helps! -Jon
This is an awesome idea.
Thank you, it turned out awesome too. I just need to figure out how to be more efficient…at least a little more 😂 -Jon
Well Explained sir.. please also plan a video for the machine and tools used in this video for making this pen
Thank you, is there a specific tool or machine you were wanting me to talk about? 😃 -Jon
Ok,I found the Video with sanding and polishing: Can you also list the sanding grits and polishing fluids please?
Glad you found it, there might be an upcoming video just for sanding. On pretty much all plastics I use a total of 8 grits for wet sanding from 240-2500. When it comes to wood or hybrid the process is a bit different. The polishing paste is called magic juice and it is a 6 step. -Jon
@@maverickworkshop Great: I‘m waiting! Thanks for answer and upcoming help 😉🤝🏻
Thanks a lot for this great work and video! May you explaine, how you make the polish? Which polish do you use one after the other?
I did not find the right video…
Absolutely! Thanks for watching
A suggestion on the barrel trimming. Get yourself a vise and secure the blank in the vise. It makes it both easier AND safer. I'm going to have to check whether I have an M3 blank, if not I'll pick some up next time I order some Liberty or Coyote Clicks from McKenzie. (Good vendor, fantastic blanks.)
I will have to take a look at a vise, the blanks are pretty unique for sure. Thanks for watching. -Jon
Can I ask you what is the name of this metal bar on which the beads rotate? I want to find the same one
Hey there, it is called a mandrel saver. I think it is listed in my list of items used. It’s a good way to turn multiple beads at the same time. -Jon
I was literally thinking about the topic , but what about the resin shavings?
Awesome idea, yes that works too! I have another video in the works with that. -Jon
Where to buy your pens?
I sell my pens on Etsy, IG and pen shows. I need to get those things linked up. Thank you! -Jon
Just music?
For this video yes, the plan was just to show my process step by step. I intend on explaining each step in the near future. Thanks for watching! -Jon
I miss buying blanks on your Etsy site. Seems someone left you one star reviews and you stopped selling.
Hey Jim, I appreciate you taking the time. It may be something we do again in the future. -Jon
Beautiful pen! Fascinating to watch the process. Thanks!
Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it!
Nicely done
Thank you!
Awesome job!
Thank you!
Looks awesome!
Thank you
What brand metal lathe?
Hello there, the metal lathe is a Little Machine Shop 7350 Hitorque Mini Lathe.
what is Magic Juice?
Magic juice is a 6 step polishing compound that is ideal for plastic. -Jon
Very nicely done
Thank you.
Beautiful piece. Thanks for the video. After I use lacquer, I lightly sand with 1500 grit sandpaper to remove the difficult to avoid small dust particles in the lacquer. Then I wipe off the dust. The lacquer then looks more smooth.
Thank you for that! I was hoping someone would have a suggestion. I will have to give it a shot. -Jon
And that, kids, is how resin strips are made. (Nice work! 😀)
😂 it’s a lot of lot of clean up and I will certainly not make it a routine to make that big of a mess.
Beautiful! where do you get your coin for the bottom?
Hey there, it is a golf marker that I got on Amazon and used my laser to mark it with my logo.
The beginning!
Looks great! I am looking to get a laser. Which one is yours? Thoughts?
It’s an Xtool F1 and it does alright on metal, not the best for that. It’s really versatile though, depends on what you’d use it for.
@@maverickworkshop I am looking for something to engrave the bottom of my bowls. So I am on the hunt. Thanks!
Bravo, simpatica idea 😊 complimenti.
Thank you!
Who is the Blank Maker?
My wife is the blank maker. -Jon
And for those who don't know, a pressure pot helps to remove all the visible bubbles inside the resin. Bubbles ruin the look of resin which is why they need to be removed with a pressure pot.
Is Alumilite resin different to epoxy resin, or is Aluminite just a brand of epoxy resin?
Alumilite is a brand, the Clear Slow might be the most commonly used for pen blank makers and preferred by turners. Because of the set up time of the resin and ease of turning. It also has the hardness when finishing which helps avoid scratches. -Jon
Good information thanks for sharing!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching.
Hey maverick you just gain one new subscriber love the work you just did… I was afraid to use tap and die while lathe is running but you just change my view May I know which metal lather you using if you don’t mind me asking💪🏾👍🏾💪🏾✌🏾 Keep the good work 👍🏾👍🏾
Awesome! Thank you, the metal lathe I am using is a hi torque 7x16” metal lathe from little machine shop. It’s been a good machine and I have not had any issues with it in the few years I have had it but I mostly use it for resin.
Thank you very much I really enjoyed watching your video. I’m a designer and my father was a wood turner and I never learnt the skill. Typical teenager…. 🤔 I’m also mad about fountain pens and dream of making my own. Great music, too. A pleasure to watch.
Thank you! It is a very engaging task (which I like). Hope you take the time to do it someday it’s very satisfying.
