  • Often times cutoffs from other projects get wasted, however, I keep them and use them to create something else that is fun and useful. Some people may see scraps, I try to see opportunity.

Can I ask you what is the name of this metal bar on which the beads rotate? I want to find the same one

Hey there, it is called a mandrel saver. I think it is listed in my list of items used. It’s a good way to turn multiple beads at the same time.

i have been interested in custom flashlights etc, and beads as well. do you think a simple "harbor freight" lathe would do to begin with beads? i do know tooling for different metals is tough and costly, however it seems to begin this way may be the step

would also like to know the mess and cleanup process as i would put a simple lathe to start in my finished basement

Custom flashlights sounds pretty neat!!**short answer: yes you can make beads with a HF lathe.
**Longer answer: if you are talking about the HF metal lathe it may work for your purpose but the workspace (between centers) is really small.
If you were talking about the wood lathe… I had the HF wood lathe and a Jet at the same time and there was a significant difference in the fit and finish of everything.

Turning is a mess, it also can make a significant amount of dust. From wood chips to swarf (resin noodles) and sanding (dust) it can be messy and even harmful if you are not wearing appropriate equipment.
On the plus side it sweeps and vacuums really easily off of hard surfaces (not carpet).
      Hope that helps!
