Hi friends, For the past 14 years, I have been using a Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 paired with a mid-2011 Mac mini (FireWire Cable -> FireWire-Thunderbolt Adapter). A few days ago, I purchased a Mac mini M1, thinking I could still use this old interface via the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)-Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (which I do not yet have). However, I discovered by contacting Focusrite support that the interface is not compatible with the new ARM processors (or at least they have not tested it) and that the latest supported operating systems are Catalina and Windows 10 (Build 1809). At the same time, I came across videos from this channel which attest to a partial functionality of some audio interfaces with the FireWire protocol using a FireWire Cable -> FireWire-Thunderbolt Adapter -> Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)-Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. I thought, alternatively, that I could emulate a compatible x86_x64 operating system on a UTM virtual machine in the hope that the USB signal "passes through" and operate, albeit at significantly lower speeds, on the same machine. I wondered, in case I can't get it to work with one of these methods, what the solution (or advice) might be to avoid permanently abandoning the interface. Could I use ADAT with any compatible interface? If so, would this "tutorial" be useful for me czcams.com/video/Xd4aIzcbVcQ/video.htmlsi=5HIo7CTh_WPRAbvS? Do you have any other ideas? Thank you to anyone who will lose their mind over this total madness.
im so not excited to figure this out lmao
Hi Scott! Thanks for the great videos. I’m trying to transfer some footage from an old camcorder (Samsung VP-D371W) and keep running into issues. I wanted to ask for some help as I’ve now reached a stage where I’m stuck! What I’ve done so far: - Tried using an AV cable and an AV capture card. I got the camcorder to be recognised, however, I was only able to record audio and not video footage. - Now trying to use a DV cable and connect it to an old Macbook with a firewire port. When I turn on the camcorder and turn it to playback mode, then connect it to the laptop using the DV cable, the screens goes black for a second which indicates to me there is some sort of connection. However, no DV symbol appears on the screen like the manual if the camcorder says it should and the camcorder isn’t showing up on the macbook. What should I do? I’ve contemplated there being an issue with the camcorder itself but would like buying another one to be my last resort as that’s expensive. Any advice appreciated :)
You'd either need to try a different camcorder or a different computer to see which one is not working.
Running Sonoma. I have all the adapters and the connection to my old Alesis MultiMix FW shows as working via the System Report, but it does not show up in Sound settings under Input or Output. Alesis no longer makes drivers... is there any other way to get these to show up?

Your awesome old macbook. Perfectly good condition and yet it is 2006 and has lines in the screen and won't boot up because of the STUPID apple updates that screw everything up and erase our history and best gadgets that worked best in the past. I am so upset...why does perfectly good equipment not allowed to work as time passes? That makes no sense. They should able to work as long as we care for them, not become obsolete from software updates. ANYONE ELSE WITH ME!?
The 2006 MBP with the lines was not caused by a software update. It was caused by the GPU failing and is a common problem on that era of systems. Even some PCs suffered from graphics problems because the chips weren’t that great back then and ran too hot.
@@ScottSchramm Oh, I see. Do you think they should go on and on without failing? Once you buy something it should last for life?
How is this legal for Apple to do? I am sitting here cursing 😡🤬 This is not supposed to be this expensive and this many adaptors to get a simple job as converting VHS's done! This is all part of an agenda!
At least the adapters still work and they didn’t drop support for it.
Hi, I followed all the instructions, however, once I start capturing a video it freezes after 1-5 minutes and stops capturing. I noticed when installing the K-Lite Codec, I don't have an option to tick MPEG-2 on the Hardware Acceleration page, could it be because of this? (I'm using an RTX 3070 Ti). Many thanks!
I don’t think that’s an issue with the computer. It sounds like more of an issue with the tape or camcorder having issues.
@@ScottSchramm Thought so. I've tried many tapes so it must be the camcorder. It usually occurs after around 20 seconds actually and the camcorder continues to play the tape, while the capture video on PC just freezes and displays a blank screen. I've seen someone on a forum say replacing the CMOS battery in camera fixed a freezing issue for them, but I'm not so sure. Anyway, thanks for the help. I think it's time to give up for me now and send it to a professional haha.
Bro how about the whole bunch of audio equipment like receivers and DVD players that have this connection but they call it differently? Like Pioneer for example and their ( i link ) or Denon but idk how they call it all I've seen from them was audio named (firewire 400/800 (ieee 1394/b) connector ) I'm especially interested in the Pioneers ( I link 400/800 ) because I have Pioneer VSA AX10i and can it work with Windows PC and how... But I guess you are not into this anymore lol I mean it is 3y/o video and you can be who knows how bz with other things these days... Like life 😂 😂
I looked up that model you provided and found it is a very high end receiver for it's time. Very few other models had FireWire/iLink jacks on them. The manual states: "The i.LINK interface makes it possible to connect the amplifier to i.LINK-equipped components such as a DVD player with a single cable and enjoy multichannel digital audio from SACD and DVD-A discs (if the player is compatible with these outputs), as well as digital audio from DVD-Video, CD and Video CD discs." - so I would say it is rare to find a compatible player with the same connection that would be compatible with that receiver.
@@ScottSchramm Yeah.. I can confirm that it is hard to find players with that connector. This is why I started to think around way to stream audio from PC. But I cannot find a way... In that case I would have to wait until next year as I wanted all of the new features that were added in the 2024 model. I doubt too many people would be selling a 1 year old car. I also wouldn't be able to get the full $7500 EV tax credit.

I have a JVC GR-D850U miniDv camcorder. I am trying to transfer video to computer. It does have a DV port on camcorder. My camcorder seems to work other than the LCD screen lighting up so I can press play etc.. I am wondering if it's possible to still transfer data from the miniDVs to computer without using the LCD screen?
Yes it will still be possible as the video will be displayed on the computer and you shouldn’t need the built in screen. Alternatively if you do need to access the menus of your camcorder you can use the analog output connected to a TV. Just don’t use that for video capture as it will be reduced quality.
Does it work with camcorder control software in such manner that you can rewind or ff through the software?

If you buy an old Mac, does it matter what operating system it runs or does it only matter if it has a firewire port? Thanks for your videos!
For FireWire hard drives, no issues, all versions supported. For camcorders, all versions except 12.3 and 12.3.1. For FireWire audio interfaces Apple has discontinued the Firewire CoreAudio driver with macOS Ventura. This means audio products that connect via Firewire will not work on Ventura and must remain on macOS Monterey or earlier.
@@ScottSchramm Just to clarify, so for a camcorder, I should avoid Monterey (versions 12.3 and 12.3.1), but all versions earlier and later will work?
Correct
Correct me if I'm wrong, but your mini dv camera is the Canon Vivia HV40 correct? For those who have this camera it has an HDMI port. You could save yourself the time and captured video through there and save time and money with all the extra steps you outlined. But for those who don't have this camera, the steps you outlined are good.
Yes if the camera has HDMI, you can get a USB capture device for that HDMI connection but it's best to capture the raw data from the tape in original quality rather then capturing the playback of the video stream. The capture card will either be capturing at a higher bitrate then the video was recording in (wasting space) or most likely a lower bitrate which will cause a reduction in quality.
@@ScottSchramm You are correct in that method. I was thinking using my elgato 4k capture card but not everyone has a capture card. So your right. I'm glad someone is showing the correct way, I was pulling out my hair with other content creators telling people to use external RCA capture cards, specifically the one you X'd out in your video.
does the laptop not require a firewire card???
Not required if it has Thunderbolt.
@ScottSchramm ok well I've tried all ways it has a thunderbolt type C port and am using firewire cable from camcorder to USB-A male to USB type C via adapter
@@davelympany1724 You can't use it with USB-A. This is explained in the video.
The Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter has been discontinued. They are currently selling for $70+ on eBay. I guess I'll have to go the AV route.
Don't do that. Watch this updated video: czcams.com/video/LXXSZdOZb-k/video.html
Great video sir. I use an old Sony Handicam 1394 4-pin to older Lenovo 410s, 420s and some 510s, 520s to run older Dartfish software video capture with time code for rowing regatta video replay timing system. Some of those Lenovo's transmit fuzzy analyzer video while others are OK. Can't figure out why. Alos, the 4-pin ports are VERY fragile. If you force the cable in, the pins will crush to the back of the port and render it useless. The Sony hvr z1 or v1 replacement port mentioned below 12 days ago solves this issue if you're a handy fixer. Will check out your laptop list and maybe try a Dell XPS instead of the Lenovo's going forward.
Even in my 2017 Chevy cruze, the usb port doesnt provide enough power to charge a phone. But i might have a Y cable somewhere, ill have to try this.
I have a 2015 MacBook Pro and want to transfer video from a MiniDV camcorder to it the way I used to with my 2011 MacBook Pro that had built in firewire ports (that one died so can't use it). The camcorder has a 9 pin firewire port (female) and the Mac has Thunderbolt 2 ports (doesn't have USB-C). Is there a direct way to go from firewire 9 pin to thunderbolt 2?
You only need the FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter but since it's been discontinued it is hard to find. It may be cheaper and easier to buy another 2011 MacBook similar to the one you had.
@@ScottSchramm What's the part number of this adapter just in case I can find one? I was actually thinking of getting a used/tested motherboard for the MacBook I have. A pain but cheaper and I had just put new ram, battery and hard drives in the 2011 so I'd like to try and salvage some of that.

Check the menus on the camcorder for any audio settings. Sometimes there is a setting called format or sample rate and there are usually two options to pick from. Change it to the whatever the other setting is and that should fix it. Towards the middle of this video I show such settings czcams.com/video/P5PdxKTmL0I/video.html

The solution i found is that you should never leave any device on when connecting the firewire cable otherwise you can short circuit both of the boards To fix your camera i would suggest swapping the port of the camera you had with the camera you bought (did this with my sony hvr z1) it should be a pretty quick fix with sony cameras, but i dont know about canon…
Thx. a bunch of my Sony cam 4-pins have crushed in so looking to replace the port inserts.
Hi! Just wanted to ask if the newest version works with firewire! I know its tiring to inform us all for 2 years so i thank you for your patience.
