@@DevoteeCT ohh, I don't think I e ever seen that stuff. I'll keep an eye out!
I feel you on the grumpiness. Just yesterday I finished a Gary Fisher Joshua for a friend's son. Super nice people, but was dropped off with "the chain broke." A newly laced rear wheel, full drivetrain replacement, and many other fixes and replacements later, the only feedback I got was "where's the kickstand?" Ugh. I think that was one of the many reasons I had to step back from helping out with my local co-op: the appreciation gap. It always hurt a little bit when people didn't seem to care how cool a certain bike was, or how much better a bike would be with x-setup or y-parts. Took a while to realize that that was all on me and my expectations. One of the volunteers mangled his bike (a nice Centurion which we spent a LOT of time getting roadworthy) and I gave him a fully sorted Cannondale R-something or other--Dura-Ace crank, brand-new-old stock 105 long-cage rear derailleur, Ultegra wheels, fully brought--back-from-the-dead Shimano 600 brifters that was perfect, and he rolls into the shop the next week with all kinds of crap bolted onto it, new ridiculous tires that were rubbing the chainstays, a loose seat, etc. It broke my heart. But once you pass that bike on, it's up to them, I guess. It was slightly too small for me, which made it a little less painful lol.
@@stevenfoskett5077 yeah, that's heartbreaking. I've refurbished many a bike with all my heart and soul only to have the person "customize it" . .. totally mangle it. One of the worst is when I do a ton of free work and discount parts. And then they don't like it and want me to undo work to make wrong and again. I volunteered at bike farm several shifts a week for years, often the only person that would show up at all. And I had to step back for the same reason. So much ungrateful and entitlement. It's a shame too because there are so many really positive experiences that get soured or overshadowed by the few bad ones. Doing stuff is hard. Not just in the doing, but also in the having your will to do it constantly kicked around...
An hour of scores, love it! Any luck grabbing any bikes at ccc for tuneup/flip video? Also big thanks for your old internal cable routing video, worked perfectly couple weeks ago for me.
@@brian1231 I've been avoiding grabbing anymore flip bikes, just to much stuff in the way and I have a few I still need to get to. But I'm sure I'll come across one I can't resist sooner or later.
Also glad to hear it about the internal routing video! I'm betting over the long run that's going to be my most important video! Nothing worse than fighting internal routing for hours and hours without knowing that trick! Believe me it took years to perfect that method!!!! 😂
Thanks for this video. I have the CB1 step-through and this guide is very useful for removing the cranks and bottom bracket
Heck yeah glad to help!
You're still stuck with down tube shifters though and the geometry on those old bikes is really steep. I have 1989 Bianchi I was thinking of doing this to but I don't know if it's really worth it to make a bike that is still limited by the frame. The modern hybrids are so nice now.
You're not stuck! There's a zillion options to move the shifters off the down tube! If that's your thing. Down tube shifters are still the lightest and least expensive way to shift, and most out of the way! I still use them on my drop bar bikes. And, limited by the frame!?! Have you seen my build videos? Especially for the old Terry race bike converted to 650b 1x and riser bars with the down tube shifter mounted onto a thumb shifter pod? Or the nothing special Schwinn? Converted from 27" to 700c with cruiser bars and a trigger shifter? We're only limited by imagination and creativity... Or available parts/adapters. There's also bar end shifters, and thumbies and control shifters, and retro tech brake levers where you can mount a down tube shifter onto the brake. And ird makes a stem shifters clamp so you can mount the down tube shifters to the stem. And old trigger shifter, and even grip shifts. I buy up every old cheap mountain bike I come across mostly for the thumbies or trigger shifter so I can do these upright conversions, the long cage derailleurs and compact MTB cranks help too! In one of my next projects I'm converting a old 80's Novara randonnee touring bike into an all Deore XT 700c 1x cruiser bars commuter! And probably going to taki it on some tours too! I can't wait.
Love your vids dude keep on keepin on 🚲❤️
Glad you like them!
Always nice to see a huge bike get paired up with its intended pilot! Also, you had me waxing nostalgic about the set of Paselas I had on an early aluminum Trek road bike a few years back. They were pretty awesome. And they come in a 24" size that was the finishing touch on a Terry Symmetry I recently refurbished.
another option for getting extra height would be one of those threadless steerer extenders. basically a tube with a pair of pinch bolts at the bottom, and a 1-1/8" OD on the top to give you an extra 3" or so. it looks funky, but it's a dirt cheap way to get extra height and still be able to use a dime-a-dozen threadless stem.
I just got an old Trek 720 with a stuck Cinelli stem - the bolt and wedge can come out - it seems like the stem is corroded into the steering tube - what do recommend to free it? I have already tacoed a front wheel, hit the stem bolt with the wedge a little loosened, tried some PB Blaster - some wood on the fork and try to turn the stem w/ the drop bars - no luck - hit the fork with a rubber hammer and thought not such a good idea - I think its's still good - thinking of trying Kroil but read on Sheldon Brown some people can drill a stem out of the steering tube, thanks for any tips!
Make sure you have the wedge knocked completely free! Pull the bolt all the way out then just set it back in like a punch and pound the top of it to knock the wedge away. also dry ice really works if it's corroded. It will cause it to shrink and may brake the corrosion then you can get some leverage and brake it free!
@@starmichaelbuilds Thanks for the tips! I just watched a video from RJ The Bike Guy where he used sodium hydroxide crystals (Zep Crystal Heat) to dissolve the aluminum stem in the steering tube. I have already used a grinder to grind the stem (and attached bars) off and get the fork out of the body and plan to try this route.

Just used the two housings together with old cable method today and worked perfectly. Thanks for the tip and referencing this vid with your recent Specialized handlebar upgrade situation.
This video hit close to home. I have a 1989 Bridgestone MB-2, which I just took off the carriage barn wall, to use this Spring. I remembered my conversation with my mechanic about changing the bars, and he said basically your conclusion. $$$ Now that I live in a bike mechanic wasteland, I wish I had told him to go ahead. Great video, and I enjoy your hunts for quality parts. That Bridgestone frame with the sparkle paint... someone had dreams for that bike.😍
Flat bars on inexpensive bikes are very much a cost saving measure. It's convenient for the factories. Most hybrids and such would benefit from a bar that sweeps back significantly, like the North Roads bars found on an English three speed, yet they don't. It's even more common on inexpensive ebikes to use flat bars or something with a little rise at most, when the people buying them would benefit greatly from something that sweeps back. I guess a decent swept handlebar requires too much imagination for the people picking out how their bike range is going to be. The very existence of the "comfort bike" is an insult to the bikes of many decades prior where comfort was the default option, and done to a much better standard than a hybrid or inexpensive mountain bike with a suspension fork and a tall stem. ...Dutch bikes should exist in more places than just Dutchland.
I mostly agree. I think flat bars are as much about making bikes look like sporty mountain bikes, and not like "girls" old cruises bikes. Also Dutch bikes are the opposite end of the pendulum swing and kinda totally crazy too! Hybrids are actually a pretty rad best of all worlds kind of bike really, mostly, except where they cheap out and that they're not sexy like a performance bike.
I wanted to come back to this video to say thank you! I tried this out on my bike and I was able to fully secure the pedals again! I have a foldable bike that 165mm cranks with 9/16" pedal inserts. My left pedal had actually fallen off while I was riding. After close inspection, the threads in the crank arm were completely stripped. I spent the whole evening looking online to replace the whole crank set (the crank arms and the single crank ring). This quickly turned to $50 dollars on my amazon shopping cart. Then I stumbled on your video and you gave this amazing suggestion! I really would have though rethreading the crank arm's pedal insert would increase the diameter too far, but this video proved me wrong. And the way you explain the best practices was really helpful and it played out exactly as you presented it! I was even able to thread the Thread Tap with a wrench, being very careful to keep it perpendicular. The only thing I ended up buying was a "9/16-20 Right & Left Hand Thread Tap HSS 9/16'' - 20 TPI for Bike Crank Repair" and "finish line bike grease", spending $31 dollars and now I have tools I can use for other applications too! Great video and thank you!
Made this upgrade myself a few months ago. I only needed to raise the bar a couple inches, but getting the grips raked backwards is amazing. Actually flat, flat bars are awful.
Couldn't agree more! Why do so many bikes come with flat bars! It's almost like doing everything the worst way possible is the bike industry's goal!😅
@starmichaelbuilds Possibly because of your conclusions in the video. It costs as much to fix the bike to fit properly as it does to buy it in the first place. Maybe they're intentionally trying to "double dip" at our wallets? In any case, my next bikes are going to be built up from frames. I'm only paying for the parts once and getting the fit right the first time around.
I wasn't going to say that, but totally agree, lol. Although I think it's usually cheaper to buy a whole bike than do a piece meal build. I'll often get a frame I like and buy a whole used bike that has most of what I want on it and buy it for the parts and swap them over. Way way cheaper than buying one thing at a time and a lot faster. When I was building custom bikes for people with all new parts the bills got over 8k almost every time. I spent a year hourding used parts before building mine and had maybe $1500 onto it 😜
@@starmichaelbuilds Thank you for the advice. I'm looking for the Microshift Sword 2x10 groupset for one of my bikes. I have not found a bike that comes with this set yet, but I'll keep looking. The second bike I have in mind is a high power ebike on a custom frame, so I'm already prepared for getting the parts one at a time and at a higher cost with that one.
Fascinating scores there. You sort of mentioned it by noting that up-and-coming framebuilder, but do you think there's actually opportunity amid all this coming-and-going with builders and companies etc.? Or is just not a viable business model anymore, and you'll just have hardcore builders left, doing it for the love of the game?
I think you're nuts if you want to try and make a living in bikes. And even back in 2010 all the builders told me that. But I wouldn't listen... And don't expect anyone that has the itch to listen now! If you can't help yourself I say go for it! But you'll probably end up burning out and making sandwiches at whole foods. I wish I was joking, but you would not believe the talent in this town that has😮😮😢😢😢
I have that handlebar, my favourite for old MTBs that need more stack height. It comes painted black. Wald 8038GB.
Nice, I liked it🎉
Love all the videos, including the scores videos. Any chance we could get a video with you going on Sunday and getting your scores? Also a video at the upcoming swap meet would be cool too.
It's so much easier to talk about things after the fact than remembering to film things while doing things! But I'll try.
i have the same bike, same paint. someone put way better components on yours. mine is all diacompe and suntour parts, horrible suicide shifters (non indexed). he definitely cold set the rear, 126mm is normal. all prelude's from that era were 2x6 speed rears. watching this because i went to replace my BB and the previous owner stripped the non drive side crank and it's late and my pinky is purple and i need catharsis. thanks.
also those cranks and chain rings are not the same as mine, but still sakaes.
Thumb nail shows you crocheting a pink bra...subscribed!
Lol what!? 🤣😂
You need a bra
You´ve probably saved several thousand tons of metal ore being mined for new bikes with this video.
Lol, I just made this yesterday! But give it time and hopefully that will be true!
I was just at salvage sales today and there was a nice frame with a Cinelli stem in it. I assumed it was stuck but it loosened up and just took a gentle push to free the plunger and one good yank to break it free. I couldn't believe it, it seemed way to easy after having to film this episode!
How did you know I´ve been fighting with this problem for the last three days?
Because at some point we're all unlucky enough to stuck with this problem! But also learning how to do anything is very freeing! So maybe it's a good thing in the end... After you're done... Hopefully with luck getting it out!
Let me know how it's going!? 😄
@@starmichaelbuilds Still drilling...
I keep thinking about this comment man. Hope you got some new cheap drill bits and got through that head!
@@starmichaelbuilds Got new cheap drill bits alright, but I lost my nerves when the the drill jammed and a bit of the bolt head flew off. My poor drilling not your technique! Solved the issue by buying exact same bike where everything was screwed except the fork and the stem. Keep up the great videos and greetings from Austria!
What model is that bottom bracket?
StarMichaelB.. Great score on the jig and the tubes.. I have built a few frames many years ago.. mainly freestyle.. drafted it full scale, mittered it with half round files, aligned it with the strings and a Starrett straight edge.. rattle can paint job. I still have it in my barn.. Z

Thanks, will do!
does titanium color ride better than black tho? 😂
Lol, absolutely! And only costs twice as much! And probably shaves several grams.
Quite a chariot you built there, well done! I'd say that's the only bike you need but we know that's crazy talk. A framebuilding video series would be next-level, but at the very least you need to do a "scores" type video and show us every tube and lug from that haul lol.
Dang, you drive a hard bargain! I just finished recording and editing a scores video and I was to lazy to go through the tubes and lugs. I just took a picture of it all in the back of my car... And I kind of regret it, lol. Maybe I'll take you up on your suggestion tomorrow and add to the scores video!

Temu is a little weird I usually type in anything I can think of. I think it's actually a motorcycle cargo net, but don't worry, if you search for bike stuff you'll see all the motorcycle stuff too. Whether you want to or not!
I know, I was hoping it would be way lazier... But what you going to do 😂😂😂. I totally would have put bars like this on, but it did already come with them.
I had a feeling "lazy tune-up" would be a relative term here, then less than 10 minutes in you're crackin' the bb and the headset and diving into the wheel hubs. People looking for good bikes are lucky to have you out there! And Iove those handlebars, had to rewind to see if you bought the bike with them, they look like something you would throw on there.

I aligned the hanger in the first video! It was just tention. No more skips!
Cool, I still have that front Tipo hub... trades?
😂that's right maybe.... But I might go Dynamo!
Uh-oh, you went there--the great grip shift (non) debate! I'm not really a fan, either, but after working on a zillion of them, I have made my peace with them, and even have grudging respect. 1.) Once I actually figured out the right way to change the cable, a lot of that frustration melted away. A lot, but not all of it lol. 2.) They're not all created equal. I always thought those SRAM 'MRX' or whatever model line worked pretty well, I even bought a new set for a bike or two, and they're dirt cheap. The crappy ones, however, were super crappy. The Shimano ones I found to be really nice shifting, but you had to unscrew a cap to get at the cable, and it would often strip. 4.) The front shifter is a thing of beauty with its sort of micro-ratcheting mechanism so you can actually trim. It's the same reason I fell in love with Campy front brifters. 5.) When you try to get someone to learn how to shift (*try* lol) it's a little simpler to just yell 'crank it away from you!' or 'pull it toward you!'
Oh, boy, just wait till I go off on Campy brifters 😂
I love grip shift! I use 8 speed. Don't toss them send them to me....😊
I've had customers that love and swore by them, but I still think they're crazy! 🤣
Back when the two systems were first introduced, my dad got a GT Karakoram with rapidfire thumb shifters, and I got a Rockhopper with grip shift. I assumed it was the better system because that's what the Cannondale pros used at the time. Anyway, the first time I rode my dad's bike, I realized I had made a mistake. Rapidfire was faster, more reliable, and didn't have those damn near unreplaceable half-grips that turn to goo in the summer. In short, you're not wrong about grip shift.
Yeah the grips are a drag, but the unreliable shifting and pain in the but cable routing is the deal breaker. I kinda thought it was cool the first time I came across it too...but not for long!
Hey, thanks 🎉
Great explanations! Thanks!
Man, been there breaking something at the end of a build. You put on a good face lol. Super interesting discussion at the beginning, too, re: Taiwan, the custom frame value proposition, and famous frame builders still kicking around.
