I feel you on the grumpiness. Just yesterday I finished a Gary Fisher Joshua for a friend's son. Super nice people, but was dropped off with "the chain broke." A newly laced rear wheel, full drivetrain replacement, and many other fixes and replacements later, the only feedback I got was "where's the kickstand?" Ugh. I think that was one of the many reasons I had to step back from helping out with my local co-op: the appreciation gap. It always hurt a little bit when people didn't seem to care how cool a certain bike was, or how much better a bike would be with x-setup or y-parts. Took a while to realize that that was all on me and my expectations. One of the volunteers mangled his bike (a nice Centurion which we spent a LOT of time getting roadworthy) and I gave him a fully sorted Cannondale R-something or other--Dura-Ace crank, brand-new-old stock 105 long-cage rear derailleur, Ultegra wheels, fully brought--back-from-the-dead Shimano 600 brifters that was perfect, and he rolls into the shop the next week with all kinds of crap bolted onto it, new ridiculous tires that were rubbing the chainstays, a loose seat, etc. It broke my heart. But once you pass that bike on, it's up to them, I guess. It was slightly too small for me, which made it a little less painful lol.

@@stevenfoskett5077 yeah, that's heartbreaking. I've refurbished many a bike with all my heart and soul only to have the person "customize it" . .. totally mangle it. One of the worst is when I do a ton of free work and discount parts. And then they don't like it and want me to undo work to make wrong and again.
I volunteered at bike farm several shifts a week for years, often the only person that would show up at all. And I had to step back for the same reason. So much ungrateful and entitlement. It's a shame too because there are so many really positive experiences that get soured or overshadowed by the few bad ones. Doing stuff is hard. Not just in the doing, but also in the having your will to do it constantly kicked around...
