    what is creating the metaemotions specifically? They seem problematic. Is it our perception and/or rumination about a certain situation? Because that would suggest, making thoughts more controllable (working with the metacognition: worry is out of my control), doing nothing with neg thoughts would lead to less metaemotions to occur?

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před 15 dny

      That’s a good question: “what causes meta-emotions?” The answer is the inborn mechanics of our brain. Human physiology is designed to have a negative response to pain - we are built to pull our hand from a flame thinking “pain, bad”. If we feel something sharp under our foot we pull it back thinking “pain = bad.” It is an evolved survival mechanism of all animals. We are built by nature so that all negative feelings provoke a second negative feeling that prompts us to act. Our minds are also built this way. A feeling of sadness or anger causes a secondary negative feeling, which can cause a third and a fourth. This happens within the lowest mechanisms of mind. They are automatic and can run out of control unless we consciously intervene.

  • @Tjenaretjenaremannen
    @Tjenaretjenaremannen Před 24 dny

    what is the interplay between metaemotions and metacognitions for mental illness?

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před 24 dny

      Meta-emotions are automatic emotional reactions that increase negative feelings. For example, sadness can cause more sadness which then causes despair which causes depression. Metacognitive training in the perception of emotional impermanence stops meta-emotions. The refined perception of the moment-to-moment changes in sadness disengages the mechanism that causes secondary negative emotions. My newest paper is on precisely this - it’s on my website (see bio info). “The computational mechanisms of detached mindfulness”.

    Hey! This topic is so interesting. I wish I could tell someone my experience, but sadly I have to just silence it. This year I had the most powerful psychotic episode, where I trained my metacognition. It kind of triggered it, but at the same time stabilized it, and then... well I dont have words to describe that. I had one of the worst episodes in my life, where all inside was hell. Then all sort of things started happening outside. But I want to keep this as scientific as possible, so the thing is I tried to manipulate the process of emergence (complexity sciences; evolution) by using meta-cognition. I could describe my method but im kinda disappointed so im not even talking about this anymore, as ppl just seem to not believe this kind of things. The good notice! Im finally stable, and can predict really quickly when a manic episode is going to develop or a depressive one, and can mitigate the risks in a single day. I would love to know what was it that happened, why I could maintain full consciousness while in a psychotic episode, and managed to stabilize myself without any change in meds. And why now my mind started working way more efficiently, as if my brain kind of evolved

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před měsícem

      @@Mohammad-bg1xc While I can’t say for certain I suspect your lack of comprehension comes from lack of stable attention. When thoughts intrude on you while reading, it obstructs your ability to keep track of the ‘through line’ of the overall idea. I suggest this particular exercise to increase reading attention stability: If you close your eyes you’ll see a changing pattern on the back of you eye lids. You’ll notice there are dark and light patches. Focus on the dark patches, but narrow down your attention to a smaller and smaller section of the dark pattern, as small as you can go. ‘Squeeze’ your mind to keep thoughts from intruding. This will take practice to build up the procedural knowledge that will then be deployed by your brain automatically when reading a book. Your attention will more automatically go toward the dark printed text of what you’re reading. You’ll find thoughts don’t intrude as much, and you can understand more easily. Try for 5 minutes before reading, and practice it while taking breaks from reading. I suggest 5 minute practices 5 times a day. Like a muscle, building your attention stabilizing procedures takes time, so keep at it!

      I know what you mean. First thing to realize is that motivation is key. The deep brain is motivated by a cost-benefit analysis - if it perceives the cost (the harm) of something to be terrible enough, and the benefits good enough, people can be motivated to cross mountains and win against overwhelming odds. First thing you have to tell your brain is that not doing all that it can to protect itself will lead to the worst possible outcome. Feel it. Allow yourself to become terrified by the possibility of your whole life ending up as nothing and being alone (or whatever the worst possible outcome is for you). Then think about what you want in life (people, meaning, happiness) and all the benefits you can obtain if you have enough discipline. All this will allow you to become as resolved as a soldier standing on death ground. Write down the daily habits you need to avoid the worst possible fate, and to achieve your happiest possible outcome. Then do it. Dig deep. Do whatever it takes.

      That’s a good one - what always worked for me was to leave my phone/alarm across the room so I would physically have to get out of bed to turn it off. Remember to hit snooze!

      @@KRISH2163 Hmmm well it sounds like you’re chronically sleep deprived, which happened to me for years growing up and I didn’t realize it. The body will insist on getting the sleep it needs. Count the hours you get - is it at least 7-8 or 5-6? Also, do you take an medication before sleeping? Try turning the light 💡 in the morning, and turning on music, and going to lie on your couch instead of your bed. Or go to extremes and get in the bathtub and turn on the water. I’m leaning toward you being sleep deprived and your body forcing you to make up for it.

    Great video! I meditate almost daily as a little break between longer work sessions. I like Andrew huberman's non-sleep deep rest 10 minute protocol in the afternoon, I also do a silent 5 minute meditation and then with 5 minutes of breath work more often as a little 10 minute break from work. One of the big things I think many people get wrong about meditation is that they believe it should be perfectly focused for 10 minutes and you mind shouldn't wander, but what is interesting is that it's the wandering of the mind and then the refocusing that is helping you develop the benefits of meditation! It's the refocusing 🙂 I just watched your Disney video yesterday, what a curious idea that was, thank you for sharing!

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před 5 měsíci

      You’re very welcome! And I think you’re right - it’s not about being totally focused the whole time you’re meditating, it’s about training your mind to resist distractions, disengage from rumination, and to develop a greater meta-awareness overall.

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před 6 měsíci

      That’s a good goal to have - there is a science around making good habits. It’s vital to pair your new routine with a cue. Choose one, and make an IF->THEN rule for it. IF I’m finished breakfast THEN I journal for five minutes. IF I finished my shower, THEN I meditate for 10mins. It’s important to set your timer as a deliberate block of time. Choose your cue. Choose your habit. Choose the amount of time. Let me know how that works.

    Great video and this is something you can really see in effect in modern society, even among adults. I also fear that modern Disney (and children's entertainment in general) is failing to teach children about risks and consequences. Old fairytales and older Disney movies were very effective ways to teach stranger danger" whereas now they're actively encouraging kids to interact with strangers and defy their parents, often showing it leading to new friendships and wonderful adventures.

    Hey Meta-think, i have a question and would love to hear your thought process around it. There is without a doubt too many distractions in my life right now, i’ve realized its primarily youtube in my case since its there all the time. When i eat, when i shower (usually) and so on. Im a 24 year old engineering student and need to hone in my focus more since the problems i face in uni requires deep work. Now here’s what i want to ask: playing counterstrike is my hobby right now, i want to improve and i do some daily routines to improve. Similarly to when i was playing golf. I dont really feel obsessed or that i have to do it all the time, i can restrict it to evenings for example. My question is: do i have to remove all distractions (gaming, youtube, porn) or can i keep playing my game during evenings as a reward for doing my duties? I have already quit all social media except youtube. My understanding is that youtube in my case is worse than the game, since its more compulsive, and its there the second Im bored. I never have time to be bored or let the mind wander. What do you think good sir?

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před 6 měsíci

      Hi Tommy, I can tell you what I needed, which was to forcibly remove all compulsive distractions from my home environment. And I needed to stop watching shows and playing games that burned up my brain’s processing power at night. Even just a movie makes your brain consume GBs of data that you then process when you sleep instead of the crucial work that your life depends on. It helps to think of yourself as a soldier, or an elite athlete who has to scrutinize everything they do as either “helpful/non-helpful” to their goal. I would suggest locking yourself out of everything in your home that keeps your dopamine high, so that boredom will force you to do the activities that will lead to your future happiness.

      I see, i understand you’re saying what worked for you, what you would recommend and i appreciate you answering my comment. I feel like this is a quite extreme approach though. I can’t really see a life where even watching a movie is considered too much, but idk. When i envision the life i want its a life where i can do what i must do, while still enjoying myself at the evenings. Surely this should be possible without removing everything?

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před 6 měsíci

      @@tommykomo9890 I get what you’re saying. It’s not about never watching movies or gaming, it’s about being very deliberate when you’d choose to do them. Think of it like drinking, if you’re doing it every day out of routine, that can become a harmful runaway habit. For starters I might suggest going cold turkey for a week, or just locking yourself out of the things that are most compulsive that sabotage your long term self-interest. In five years you’ll never wish you spent more time in front of screens!

      Very fair point of view! I extremely appreciate you taking the time answering me man.. you’re great. So when i eventually go back to say gaming or watching movies etc, how would that be scheduled? Could i do it everyday after ive done all my tasks? How do you do it? Do you work all day? What do you do for enjoyment? Dont have to answer the last question i understand its a bit personal. Once again, appreciate you!!

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think Před 6 měsíci

      @@tommykomo9890 Thanks so much - it all depends on how you want to use your spare time, and if it interferes with your larger goals. Me, I have to cut it all out except for maybe once a week, if that. I’ve found that high stimulation entertainment that maxes out my senses makes reading and learning in my spare time unbearably boring. So I minimize that. Also I don’t work all day, it’s more a routine of good habits that pulls me along a path of productivity. Anything that’s superficially highly enjoyable should be a treat. Honestly I did eat a lot of junk food and watch a lot of movies during the holidays with family, but that’s what it’s for ;) This is just what works for me and you’ll have to decide your own self-discipline rules.

    Some blanket stuff though. I work at home and need Inet. I think best advice is to understand our internal mechs that are calling for these cheap stimuli and re-prioritising higher centers that will habituate into long term personality change. i.e. really digging into the self to see when our old and weaker self is attempeting sabotagq, rather than superficial "starvation" techniques. In ways this is a bit text book, and a bit void of the internal changes required to make healthy and proper habits. But some good points of course. My 2 cents, keep the change.
