    Thank you for another fantastic lecture! Is mindfulness an exercise in metacognition since you are both monitoring and controlling?

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks very much - metacognition is the overarching subject, while mindfulness is a sub-category of one of the many ways you can monitor and control your mental states.

    what is creating the metaemotions specifically? They seem problematic. Is it our perception and/or rumination about a certain situation? Because that would suggest, making thoughts more controllable (working with the metacognition: worry is out of my control), doing nothing with neg thoughts would lead to less metaemotions to occur?

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think  Před měsícem +1

      That’s a good question: “what causes meta-emotions?” The answer is the inborn mechanics of our brain. Human physiology is designed to have a negative response to pain - we are built to pull our hand from a flame thinking “pain, bad”. If we feel something sharp under our foot we pull it back thinking “pain = bad.” It is an evolved survival mechanism of all animals. We are built by nature so that all negative feelings provoke a second negative feeling that prompts us to act. Our minds are also built this way. A feeling of sadness or anger causes a secondary negative feeling, which can cause a third and a fourth. This happens within the lowest mechanisms of mind. They are automatic and can run out of control unless we consciously intervene.

    Thank you so much for sharing! Is journaling another tool for metacognition? If so, I would love to know the metacognitive approach and how to do it.

      Journaling can help you clarify your thoughts, and meditation can help you control them

    Bout to listen to this. Does this subject matter relate to phenomenology? That’s what brought me here

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Metacognition involves awareness and control of one's own cognition, while phenomenology explores the subjective experience of consciousness (and much more). The relation is in metacognition's capacity to reflect on and shape our phenomenological awareness, influencing how we perceive and interpret our subjective experiences.

      Oh, sorry about that - I am speaking to my students. I lecture twice a week at Carleton University in Ottawa and I don’t post all of them since they can get a bit repetitive.

      @@Meta-Think Thank you for the clarification! I enjoy the lecture videos very much. I wouldn't mind having more of them, even if they're repetitive. I've found that immersing oneself in an idea(s) for extended periods of time helps to engrain them more deeply in one's mind. I suppose I could rewatch the same videos, but that would be... repetitive :)

    This channel has been a fortunate discovery! I send greetings from India. Are there any introductory books on Metacognition that you would recommend, Professor?

    • @Meta-Think
      @Meta-Think  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hello from Canada, glad to hear you’ve been enjoying my videos. Almost all the books on metacognition are academic and technical. I have synthesized much of the literature into my recent publication “Metacognitive skill: how it is acquired” which you can find on Google Scholar if you add my name. Feel free to ask me any questions!

    • @ujjwalparashar3256
      @ujjwalparashar3256 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@Meta-Think I found the paper, and I can't wait to dive in :)
      This year, I also came across this book by Sam Harris, titled 'Waking Up'. It introduced me to theories of the mind and consciousness in Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta, two prominent Eastern philosophical schools. They view the mind as a vast space, different areas of which are illuminated by consciousness.
      For me, your channel has supplemented a purely theoretical and philosophical framework with rigorous, modern and secular research, and practical tools to put these ideas to some good use.
      I wish you all the best, and I hope your work reaches an ever wider audience.

      @@ujjwalparashar3256 Yes I’ve read that same book and have practiced Vipassana meditation for 20 years. My paper “Metacognitive Threshold” details how my model of metacognitive skill learning can be applied to explain meditation. Thanks for the good wishes - hope you enjoy!
