Fishing Catalina Island! Part 1 of 3 Wide Open Calico Bass (Catch, Clean and Cook)
Hey everyone, welcome back to another video! I took my boat out to Catalina Island to fish two days and one night in hopes of catching a White Seabass or Yellowtail. The first part of the day I found some wide open Calico Bass fishing on the artificial lures as well as live squid. Stay tuned for part 2 where I camp on my boat and fish for the elusive WSB.

White sea bass usually hits around 4:30 to 6:30 in the morning Yellowstone usually runs around almost the same time but around 4:00 the latest from 4:00 to 5:30 it's great to have Calico Bass nice video
Can you just anchor anywhere and camp?
For the most part you can anchor anywhere, just need to be I think a few hundred yards from any mooring fields. Shore camping you have to book sites ahead of time.
I'm always reluctant to fish the island solo, your vid gives me a little courage. What was the price for the squid?
@@mr.k9935 I’ve been crossing that channel for about 15 years. Definitely pays to know how to read the forecasts and local winds. When in doubt don’t go out haha. Squid was 80 bucks plus tip!

Yea same principal, if you fall over it will kill the engine. I carry a handheld vhf but a beacon isnt a bad idea!

I have an 18’ monarch bay boat with 115 outboard also. I fish the oil rig and break wall all the time. I need to build the courage to hit the island. With a scoop from nacho, I might as well make it worth my while. Thank you for the video.

great videos, thank you. I'm all fired up to hit the Islands, have you ever camped on Catalina island, or just anchored or got a can (mooring)? Have you made the run to San Clemente yet,? or Santa Barbara Island?
Yea I normally camp either two harbors or the boat in sites but I have found just sleeping on the boat cuts down the amount of junk I have to bring as well as set up time, anchoring and swimming back and forth. I have been to those islands just not on my boat yet. Next weather window

Hey fisherman how many hooks are aloud on the A rig in open waters?
I just always fish 3 on mine in California, I have been told by multiple people you can fish 5 in salt water but I haven't done the research on that. I just use the same fresh water rigs in salt so I don't bother re-rigging them anyways.

Hey brother, when you stay overnight out at Catalina, do you go into Avalon and get a more or do you anchor up somewhere? I plan on going my first overnighter at Catalina this weekend.
Depends on the weather conditions and where on the island I plan on fishing. It is always nice to get a mooring and have dinner in Avalon if you dont plan on fishing at night and arent far away haha

They are super fun! Yea I go 12lb braid to leader on my spinning setups. Makes it super sensitive and easy to change out my flouro leader when needed. And for the frog I go straight 60lb braid.

Great content! I can't tell you how much knowledge I've gotten from watching your videos. Thank you. If possible, could you go into detail on how you go about making bait? Size of sabiki, how you find the bait, and gear used are what I'm most curious about.

We ate them all so ya, I would say so.
There are loads of huge calico out by second reef if you know where that is. It would be cool to see a video of what you find out there. I've also seen big WSB and halibut out there as well. Bird rock is pretty loaded too. I honestly appreciate the MPA, it's nice to see this preserve doing so well. I moved to laguna before they implemented the Marine preserve, I'm grateful I was able to get few years of fishing in while it was legal but to say the least, I definitely miss it.
Yea I am conflicted on the MPA as well, I see the pros but miss fishing those areas. I will get back down to some of those zones and bring the camera as soon as these south swells chill out haha

Fished all over down there when i was a kid. Halibut…clean em quick and get the worms out of the stomach..i can remember seeing them “king cobra” on the meat.
Hell ya bro. Sometimes that light line and gear is where it's at. Especially on pressured lakes.. I definitely prefer baitcasters but when you have to use light line spinning rods is where it's at

Yea give it a try! I noticed I can walk them easier just kind of chopping the reel handle rather than trying to use the rod tip.
