UTMB Training Camp | Ultra Running Vlog
I spent a week in Chamonix getting ready to take on the hardest race of my life, UTMB. I did a lot while I was in Chamonix. I ran the first 15 miles of the race from Chamonix to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, did the Chamonix Vertical Kilometer, ran the last few miles of UTMB, and a lot more! #utmb #trainingvlog #ultrarunning

Who's training for UTMB? What's your favorite trail in Chamonix? Let me know what you think! Thanks for watching!
Ultra running capital of the world!
True! That's why it's the best!
So jealous! Chamonix is incredible!
Wish you were on the trails with me!
may be you missed Blandine Lhirondel (2 time champion of the world) and Anne-Lise Rousset from France. And Katie Schide from USA and almost France.
Blandine is a good one! Anne-Lise I don’t think is an ultra runner and Katie is on the list!
@@runningforviews anne-lise get the record on the GR20 and will run UTMB in 2024, and she runned the hardrock 100 miles and finish 2. and Blandine is more than good :) but she's obviously under the president of universe courtney
@@philippesalmon7624 haha I’ll have to keep an eye on them!
why rest on a Sunday? Monday when you are at work makes more sense as a rest day, weekends are for back to back long runs and vertical.
True! You can take a rest day any day of the week. I just like to take it when my wife and I both have work off so we can hang out.
TODAY I DID SOME INTERVALS USING YOUR 50K ADVANCE FOR MY NEXT RACE WHICH IS 3000 METERS OVER THE SEA LABEL IN JULY 19. THE FIRST 23 KM IS UPHILL (VERY HARD-25 % INCLINE) AND THE LAST 23 KM DOWNHILL. DURING MY FIRST 23 KM IN UPHILL, IN WHICH ZONE DO I NEED KEEP MY HEART TO FINISH NO OUT OF THE GAS?
I would try to keep it in Zone 3 on the uphill section and then just let the legs do the work on the downhill. Sounds like a tough race! Good luck!
@@runningforviews VERY TOUGH. THANKS
Looks tough! I'll have to give it a try!
You should! It burns so good!
ANYTHING Kilian tells you to do you’ll do it? 😂
Anything 😉 hahahaha. I should say almost anything haha.
Who else is doing uphill intervals? They hurt but they work!
i recently got my self a Runna app program for a 50km im doing end of august. but looking at their program they have all the intervals and things like that but not really any back to back long runs. why would that be the case? the most the have me go upto is 38km. then a 10km the next day.
Depends how you respond to back to back runs and how quick you want to finish. If you are looking to just finish the race then your plan should be fine. But if you’re looking for a fast time I would personally try to incorporate at least a few weeks of back to back long runs.
@@runningforviews that makes sense. Thanks 👍🏻
@@TommyGunner86 no problem!
Thank you
Thank you so much for creating this plan. I will follow it for my first 50k in september. Just one question if I may. The intervals should be done on flats or trails/hills? Or is only the heart rate zone important? Thanks!
I find it easier to do intervals on inclines so that it’s easier for your heart rate to increase while the chance of injury decreases. But you can do them on flat as well. Good luck on your first 50k!
@@runningforviews Cool, thanks man! :)
Dude this is unreal. Crazy that an accomplishment like this (while just training!) can be relegated to small-youtubership. Do. work. son.
Thanks man! Appreciate it!
Step 1: quit your job Step 2: move to the mountains Step 3: ski bike run up and down said mountains Step 4: Race and then repeat steps 3&4
Haha I’m pretty sure that most of the elite people racing have jobs too, including kilian lol. Maybe I’m dumb, but I think anyone could become an elite ultra runner.
Thanks for this. Interesting that my zones were too low when set on automatic. I think they were based on average for my age group. When I clicked on manual I found Apple automatically changed it based on my actual highest and resting heart rates without me having to enter anything. I had worked out what my zones should be based on a formula and notice apple’s calcs were within a couple of beats so left it with their calcs.
Yeah, the way that Apple is calculating hr is just by doing 208-(0.7 x age). So it’s not based off of your actual heart rate data. But it should be relatively close. Thanks for watching!
'BIG' back to backs are not required. The aim of training is to aggregate your distance/ascent. If you overdo it you'll eat into your ability to run fresh after resting (you need longer rest days). Unless of course you've built yourself up to a level were big back to backs didn't effect your recovery to continue the level of training.
I’m usually able to recover in 2 days after doing them. Also, in the training plan it usually has a recovery week following back to back long runs. Have you tried them?
@@runningforviews Back to backs, of course. But I'm getting older. If I do a back to back I will do ascent one day and keep it flattish the next. This allows tha legs to absorb/recover quicker for more ascent in two or three days and keep rest weeks after a normal heavy month
@@lcuinu smart! Do you think that doing high elevation both days would be good for a race like UTMB? I’m just doing whatever Kilian tells me to do in his book haha
@@runningforviews Killian could probably do a whole weeks of back to backs totalling several Everests. I thinks it's purely down to how the individual takes the load and recovers for the next training sessions. They won't know until they've done it and evaluated if they are improving their ascent times...or just getting tireder. Hills are essential though, but then 'anything' can scupper the race, I was sick five times on my UTMB due to the heat, but it also could have been forgetting to put on arm warmers underneath a jacket in bad weather.
Great stuff! What is your preferred liquid fuel?
Thanks! I use the Isotonic drink mix from Decathalon here in France but any powdered drink mix should work. Precision and Skratch have one that I'm sure would work great!
Good luck at UTMB! How long does it take to recover from two 28s?
Thanks! heading over to Chamonix today to train! This week I'm taking a recovery week so half the mileage of last week with one long run on the weekend, but I usually feel fine a couple days after finishing the back-to-backs.
Back to back long runs are the best/worst haha
So true! So painful when I'm doing them yet so helpful for races!
