Epiphone Elitist SG '61 Reissue - A Very Special Guitar Demo
What is a guitar? Just a loose assortment of manufactured parts assembled in a way that allows it to make sound under the correct circumstances? Metal wire magnets wood?
Or is it something greater? Something that allows the user to create a story? A tale of their thoughts and feelings and emotions laid out in a different kind of language, one that we don't all speak but certainly all understand?
Come along with me as I tell you the story of this 2002 Epiphone Elitist SG '61 Reissue electric guitar.

Where's the gratuitous fog machine bro? Sounds great!
Yes. But how?¿?
Well they sound great here - I want to get rid of some Texas Specials that I have in a second hand strat and I love classic early Fender sounds but I'm not sure whether '57 '62 '65 or '69 is what I need. These really do seem to retain that sound, because the Texas Specials don't even sound like a strat to me.
It was a very hot day outside so there were kinda melting and the eyes popped out because the mask are made from something that can melt
Great tone and great playing!
Hell naw learn mandolin bruh
Music knows no bounds bro, you feel free to live in your box while I explore possibilities!
Thanks for the video 🦄
Just noticed the song is lower pitched than usual
This is without a doubt the best review I’ve seen. I’ve watched about 15. I have the 100. Very pleased.
That SX Liquid looks awesome.
nice y do you have a tutorial how you use the effect om your fredboard?
Thats sime sweet tone!
clean af
I love that bass sound
MIM??
Sure is!
Very nice playing man. :)
Excellent playing. Chords and rhythm that go somewhere.
How
HOW ARE THE CLASSIC VIBES SO GOOD?????? I bought a CV Jazzmaster as a mod platform, and next thing you know, I started scooping up the CV versions of all the different classic fenders I didn't already own-and now I'm getting ready to pick up this same Starcaster tomorrow. the funny thing is each successive CV i buy - i end up modding less and less Also - doesn't hurt that this kid can fucking play a little bit.
What value pots are you using? You’re playing is fantastic and so is your tone. Keep up the great work.
Oh god! Are those Tallahassee’s cec bots as Rock afire bots?
do these get microphonic at all with heavy distortion?
Not in my experience -- they're fully wax potted which definitely helps, and seems like Wilkinson did a good job soldering the covers on solidly. I've never had issues with microphonics at gig volume with these. They're absolutely great pickups for the cash and definitely capture the mini-humbucker vibe and tone overall.
Just to clarify, these are the DP190 & DP191, correct? This is an excellent demo of the pickups and totally sold it for me.
That is correct!
@@MattTheGuitarGuy Hi Matt! I can't thank you enough for making this video! I have installed the Air Classic in the neck position and it is the sound I've been looking for for YEARS. I've tried fitting my single coils into a humbucker housing and it was always a chore, not to mention the hum (high gain) but this Air Classic pickup takes the best of both worlds and is amazing. You helped me finally get EXACTLY what I wanted out of my neck position. I can finally JUST PLAY and not wish I had that tone. Haha.
seeing mitzi without her pol poms is so weird… like her arms just look long
Great video. Thanks. Getting ready to buy a p90 equipped guitar. Definitely want vintage wound pickups though.
Matt - what cool pickups on that guitar?
Hey man, those are GFS Lil Killer pickups from Guitar Fetish. It's crazy -- I spent about $1000 a decade ago to build that guitar, and I stuck a set of $80 pickups in it hahahaha. I absolutely love them!
hello i am just discovering your channel i have 2 of these Squier 51 guitars a tobacco sunburst and the black one you are playing (nice sound and playing) love the the blues i wanted to ask you if you knew what pick up was in the bridge because when i got mine it had a seymour duncan installed and the neck pickup is stock but it sounds good i love thess 51’s i want the blonde 51 thank you for the review and this video
I know this video is old as heck but I was researching these pickups and found this! Thanks, it's much appreciated!
Why is the air pressure so low on looney??
Yamaha is the largest producer of musical instruments in the world.. I don’t know how it happened but now that I think of it, I have five Yamaha guitars right now. a pacifica112, a Pacifica 312, an acoustic six string, a fourth string bass guitar… and a Yamaha, AES 800 electric. I saw photos of Sammy Hagar performing on stage playing my exact Yamaha AES 800 years ago. Just for the heck of it, I go on eBay every once in a while and check to see what some of the guitars I own are selling for used. I was very surprised to see that the Yamaha AES 800 that I have had since around 2002, They are now selling used for over $2000. I can understand why. It is well-made. It stays in tune, the next, or straight, there was no Fret sprout., i’ve never had any issues with scratchy pots, fret, buzz, Neck inlays, falling out, It has the original fantastic DiMarzio pick ups, three pots.. volume, tone, phase. You can change the face by rotating the third rheostat. I’ve never seen that on any other guitar. It has quite a change in the sound, more drastic than turning the tone control… 2 pick ups, five way selector.. rosewood, fingerboard, single cutaway, solid, body, maple neck, string through. I do not understand companies selling “Road worn “guitars that are all purposely damaged. Actually, I can understand that, instead of throwing them in the trash, where they belong when they get damaged, while being made, they just turn a liability into an asset and call those Guitars “road worn like it’s something great.. I have had some guitars since the 1960s until now, and they are not worn like that. My fender 1959 jazz master did have a very fragile paint job like Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s guitar. That paint just chips off very easily. my Omahas are good, solid Guitars. To tell you the truth, there are not many companies, making poor quality Guitars, there are some, the fender, Squier bullet, and there’s another model of a cell begins with an a I think. I don’t think anyone would like one of those guitars they are not made to a standard, they’re made to a price. But one of my cheap guitars is an epiphone les balls special. Painted flat black with black P 90s. It’s the one with two pots, they saw another version with four pots. That is a different guitar that gets very good ratings. But I have the one that sold for $189 new. I got it for 50 bucks on craigslist. It’s in perfect condition. it plays better than my gibson les paul classic. It won’t stay in tune, I need to change the tuners, which I was resisting, because the tuners were cost more than I paid for the guitar.. but this guitar just comes alive when I play it. Not all many guitars do. In fact, this is guitar I never put back in its coffin. I play it every day. When I sit down in my La-Z-Boy to watch TV at night, I pick that guitar up, and I play it without having it plugged in. I probably play it more than seven hours a week. I just got done watching the 2024 NFL player draft first day. I played my Les Paul P90 $50 guitar for 3 1/2 hours while I was watching the show. if only I could play a song. I haven’t played an entire song since I stopped playing in the bands. I got sick of getting home at 4 AM smelling like an ashtray, and then having to go to work the next morning at 7 AM sometimes.. I just practice my range and licks and runs.. I never had a guitar lesson. Just like Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, two of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and quite a few others that can’t read a note.. I was told years ago, when you take lessons, you can only learn what the teacher knows.. So you better have a great teacher. But one thing, a teacher can’t teach you, is desire.

Man... I used to own one of these.. back in 2008 (?). I really enjoyed it, but at the time, finances were short, so I had to sell it. Wish I stil had mine.
I got an XGP body to go with a Warmoth neck I've been finishing. The body is good enough. The Floyd Rose recess is rough and so is the back route but I can live with those things. The neck pocket wasn't rough but a little large (by maybe a mm) but the holes were properly drilled to the neck holes/body lined up as they should so string alignment is good. My only issue is that I'm not terrible certain they used actual alder wood, even though the ad and the box said so. My long-term concern is that the Floyd posts will likely break free of the small amount of wood present between the bridge posts and humbucker route but that's a "normal" long-term issue that happens with Fender bodies. That's partly why went the cheap-o route with the body. So far, so good.
Ya ya, beautiful tones on the cleans and nice playing ., Not sure if you were using a pedal for overdrive, I think it was the amp though I’ve never been crazy about black or silver face fender amp breakup but it does work in the mix.. the old quandary of playing by myself , dialing in a tone I like and then with the band or on the recording with the other instruments it sounds wrong .. usually I’m getting way to much low end when playing at home alone ., Usually the first thing an engineer will do is roll off the bass on the guitar.., fender amps have that big beautiful bottom end and good chime on top.. .. I do love a P90 in the neck position on a Les Paul Thanks for the good video
Matt! Dude, I love your style. You play beautifully. I've been thinking about getting the Vintera II stratocaster but, since I typically play telecasters, I'm not sure if the 70s is the right fit for me. I'm torn between the mellow 60s and the brighter, higher output of the 70s. I'm not a lead player. I play rhythm and I love pretty much every genre of music. Which do you think would be most versatile?
Sounds good what amp?
I used Scuffham S-Gear on this one!
I have a 2012 Agile AL-3010SE Blue Flame that had faded a bit under a decade of exposure to the Hawaiian sun to a transparent teal on the sides and back of the body, neck and headstock. The teal bursts over to the front of the body which has transparent green flame maple veneered archtop mahogany body. It too has that gorgeous abalone traps fretboard inlays between the medium jumbo frets (they're actually slightly bigger) and the ebony fretboard has a 13.7" radius. I've found this guitar to be excellent as is in stock form. The only upgrades I've done is swapping to chrome Dunlop Straplocks, Agile's chromed bridge with brass roller saddles and now, after having this guitar for 6 years, I'm gonna swap the stock A5 humbuckers to something that has a bit more power in at least the bridge. Don't get me wrong, the stockers are GREAT PAF-styled HBs, however to get nice n dirty, I have to crank the amp but the resulting decibel levels are not conducive for my rental longevity at where I live and play. At very least, I need a higher output bridge that'll push the amp harder while it is set to a lower volume. I have about a dozen humbuckers for both the neck and bridge positions to do comparison test (this also includes the stock pups) and the best sounding pair of humbuckers will be the one that stays.
Very cool indeed Matt, thank you for this and your demos.
Great playing brother!
Incredible tone and nice playing. Pickups very well matched for that guitar.
Plenty of room left on your board with this one. Tone all the way on the overdrive? Hm, sounds like a Marshall Bluesbreaker clone to me. I have an original, and it's just the same!
How are they on top end? Mellow, or do they have some cut and bite?
The bridge is the most well balanced of the three -- very neutral EQ, so the top end does have some excellent punch. The neck and middle I would describe as more mellow, but nothing some amp EQ tweaks can't make fit your needs. That being said, I think these would work best in a 25.5" scale guitar like a Fender, or the SX I'm playing here; in a Les Paul or other 24.75" scale instrument they'd likely be more dark, and I don't know if I would like these pickups as much. In a nutshell, I'd simply describe these pickups as big on midrange.
@@MattTheGuitarGuyYou could try tuning down a step to see how the pickups sound. How do they compare in brightness to Strat or Tele pickups? How much treble do you have to add on the amp?
@@RideAcrossTheRiver They're not anywhere near Strat or Tele pickups in brightness -- they definitely have a humbucker midrange-forward overall sound. Absolutely excellent for overdriven stuff but not quite the clarity of single coils for cleans.
@@MattTheGuitarGuyI have a Gibson with P-100s, stacked P-90, that are so dark the treble must be at 10 on the amp. I don't wanna throw away $600 on Duncan or Gibson brand names, so hoping Wilkinsons are at least brighter than what I have.
It's a good thing these things were fixed
hypnotic tune and tasteful playing man!!!
I just found a used Hardtail Select (Brazilia Burst) in brand new condition, can't wait till I receive it! These older Korean Deans are slowly disappearing from the used market, better pick them up before they are gone for good.
@guitarfetish pay the man
Mitzy l think you should go get new dress or maybe that tye dress that you were sometime what you wear is rip
Fantastic demo
Nice tone and excellent phrasing dude! Subscribed ❤!
