A lot of this really echoes with the Pokemon community. Things were relatively tame up until Gen VI (X&Y and ORAS) came up and really marked an explosion in the PokeTuber space (quite literally, a tenfold increase in content and creators). Every PokeTuber at the time saw a modicum of success because it was fairly tight-knit and most people were willing to check each other out instead of brigading with one person instead of never branching out (of course, a dichotomy still existed but they were usually the ones with more capital to start it up in the first place), but any time somebody even tip-toed out of Pokemon as an uncommon variety stream, viewership would tank literally up to 90% of the typical viewcount. Going from several hundreds or over a thousand concurrent viewers to often times sub-100 was not an uncommon sight and you were borderline forgotten if you didn't do something Pokemon-related anymore. I still know a handful of creators from the time who have branched out and have seen minimal amounts of success, still struggling to climb back to their old glory day numbers 8+ years after the fact. Even some who tried to go *back* to Pokemon content have been essentially forgotten and treated like nothing ever happened. YouTubing is a rough landscape that, the more popular your category, the less likely you are to sustain an audience going to something else. The creators mentioned in this video really should be treated as the exception, not the norm, as you really have to have a devote cult of personality to make such a move and still maintain something to your name. What Ster, Jerma, Arr-Tee have done should speak numbers to their personalities that they can do what they have done and still maintain enough income to treat what they have done as their full-time career. It's a stunning example of Dunning-Kruger where you start off as being you as your pitch, then charge blindly into a niche, only to go back to realizing that being you is your success.

To the last point about TF2 Bubble only existing in creators minds, I've seen it in other YTers too. iNotorious being known for his CSGO "how to use" videos and hating how they were all anyone watched. Like you said Jerma did it best by tying his audience to his personality rather than the games, so by keeping that personality people would watch him regardless. When the content made is focused on a specific game and people watch for it, there isnt that same support for the creator.

I blame Valve, the community is so starved for content that they cling to the very few tf2 content creators so hard that they get super miffed when their youtuber dares to do something different, because they think that they are gonna be abandonned just like valve did tf2

im a day 1 jerma fan (not quite day 1 more like 2012) and I love that man so much, and I actually came to him via Ster, and eventually I "switched sides" and became a bigger fan of jerma

i still watch a handful of newer tf2bers in the scene like vorobey, great blue and shounic, all super entertaining and creative in their own way. id likely still watch all three if any of them ended up switching their content, and now im speculating about how graceful they could eventually depart if they chose to do so. super sick video, i really enjoyed it

Game being bad or mismanaged by Valve isn't the only reason players have left, perhaps it isn't even the primary reason that people have left the game, as you have asserted in this video. People get tired of doing the same thing. They move onto something different to keep it interesting. There's a reason basically every game ever has a smaller player base than it used to.

US Army Field Artillery soldier here. 1) Love Team Fortress, been playing for over a decade now and I still play occasionally 2) The cartoon art style makes the game easier to relax to. The game is super goofy compared to Battlefield or COD. 3) I love soldier, but I have much more fun playing engineer

I love TF2, I love the game but damn so I hate the community and more so Valve for just abandoning it. It's a shame that people will just give Valve a pass. I hope the FixTF2 movement does something but I'm not optimistic. People have like an allergic reaction for criticizing TF2.

I’ve always been team TF2 and I enjoyed the stupid questions like: Which is better TF2 or Overwatch? Who would win in a 1v1, Scout or Tracer? If you put TF2 players and Overwatch players on a map, which team would win? These questions meant that both games were thriving, after all, if the TF2 community didn’t see Overwatch as a threat, why would the debate even have started. Although I would say that we “won”, what exactly did we win, and at what cost? And I would think that some of the TF2 community also think the same thing. At this point even we are telling Blizzard “Stop, stop, he’s already dead!” I wish things could go back to how they were, where both games were thriving, but it sure looks like that without a miracle, things aren’t going to get better…

This may be a very dangerous comment to leave, but I am kinda curious as to what trans people think about the last segment. Obviously, being trans isn't just about changing one's name and pronouns, and people have different reasons for changing their names specifically, but I'm genuinely curious if the whole "Your name doesn't define you, you're the one defining your name." thing sparked any sort of interesting thought in anybody.

Hey Lucid, saying that actually 100% of the people in the military around the age of 20 to 30 know about TF2 is unfair. Your data pool is too small to make conclusions from. If you would have asked more people and kept it military only, I believe your data would've been better.

dang this was a great video, i already knew about rtgame because I've been watching him since a little after he was able to leave the bubble. but I had no idea jerma was actually a tf2 player back then!! he has such a strong internet identity these days and I'm grateful these CZcamsrs were able to use this game as leverage into the larger content created sphere

While playtime, truly, isn't a #1 win-it-all argument, it can still be used as a good supplement to back your claims with in ceratin scenarios, so it's not entirely useless
