Drivin n Cryin with Peter Buck 1989-12-10 Cotton Club Atlanta GA Homeless Benefit Audio Only
Chattahoochie Koochie Men
3rd Annual Homeless Benefit
2nd of 2 nights
Kevn Kinney - guitar, vocals
Tim Nielson - bass, mandolin
Jeff Sullivan - drums
Buren Fowler - guitar, banjo
Peter Buck - guitar, mandolin & ? (starting with Maddie Hope)
This is a companion show to the Fan Club Christmas Tape from 1992, recorded two nights earlier on Dec. 8. Starting with Maddie Hope, Peter Buck is sitting in. Lost & Found is great, Honeysuckle Blue has a sweet intro, Iron Mountain still crying for that upbeat bluegrass arrangement that will never come. Then Trail Of Seasons thru Hey Landlord is especially sweet. Presented for historical and documentary purposes only. All rights remain with the copyright holder.

The first reunion that I was aware of. Anne called it quits in 1986 but the pipes are in terrific shape. I’m pretty sure the open space in the picture is where the stage was. They played four tunes from their magnificent debut album. The original lineup, too. Presented for historical and documentary purposes only. When they burst on the hot Atlanta music scene, two things struck me most, Anne's awesome pipes and Bob Elsey's impeccable and tasty lead guitar. Still true to this day. The old record has a small bit of surface noise here and there, which is polite talk for scratches. Hell, when I bought it, I was living in a warehouse a block from the Omni with a K-Mart stereo. Great that it sounds this good....

This was a very special night. It was a delayed honeymoon trip for my lovely bride and me and we timed it so we could see our new favorite band while there. San Fran was very cool, a bit of a pilgrimage for this old Deadhead. The day of the show we went to the famous flower district with the vague idea of sending some to the band backstage. No biggie. It was Sunday and everything was closed but...

The second set was not a second set, if I remember correctly. You had to have a ticket for both but of course we did. Some tunes are repeated but the whole thing is great, just like the early show. He does his usual raps between songs and they are a little more audible on this tape. The same squeaky door is there. Thanks to Ken from Baltimore for the last three tunes. If anyone has had an eclectic career in music, it's Alejandro Escovedo. Not going to run through all his laurels but here he's performing all acoustic with three string players and another guitarist, if I remember correctly. Sublime, beautiful and moving. He talks a lot between songs and it's always interesting but, unfortunately, on this recording he is mostly off mic and some of it is missed....

It sounds real nice. Victorian Amphitheater. What could it be like? It was like an empty lot with a wooden fence around it and a low stage at one end. Then they stopped the show because of the crush at the front, which didn't look like much to me but then I was at the back because I was late. Kev, you shoulda kicked into an acoustic set immediately instead of Saddle On The Side Of The Road. We ...

Two Ricks sling the real stuff in this opening set for Drivin n Cryin. The two Satellites lay down some down home acoustic sounds. First rate set. To me, this is the holy grail. A pristine recording of my favorite REM tune, Skank, the show stopper from the first six or eight times I saw them. Sourced from the 1987 unofficial LP. Pretty Pictures. It was recorded on 11-09-1983 at Rhythmic Rivers Studio in San Francisco. They put their heart and soul into it in just like they did every time I heard them play it live. I am skeptical of the stated source for this recording. The boot LP I sourced it from had other errors identifying sources. Comprising most of the first side of this 1987 LP , this is a great tape but I have no idea if that description is accurate. I have the bootleg album and that's what it says. The highlights are Tighten Up with Mitch Easter on vibes and There She Goes Again. There's a pantload of tape hiss but I'm not about to apply noise reduction to these gems. Good times. My late wife and I would have been head bobbin' in that sweaty crowd, beer and wine in hand. Saw the Q's so many times. All over. The music scene in the eighties and nineties was unparalleled. It was a good time to be young and free. It's looking more and more like that will historically be the last time America was 'free'. My, how things have changed.......

    You must be a big R.E.M. fan if you’re watching this. Hopefully you can appreciate just how much Bill made the R.E.M. “sound” what it was. Not just his unique beats but his perfectly haunting vocal harmonies on most of these early songs. It’s a big reason why R.E.M. became so irrelevant when he left.

    • @oydave
      @oydave Před měsícem

      The Merlin's show is a great tape. I have that and love it. The Skank is a medley with Stumble, right? What I meant by pristine is that they were doing it in a studio as if they were going to put it on a record. Clean. Now the tape that was used to make the boot LP was a dub of a dub of a dub, so the tape hiss is tremendous but the original studio recording must be spectacular. I've since learned that they were going to make some of this session an extra on the 25th anniversary edition of Reckoning but couldn't locate the master in time.
