- Also known, incorrectly, as the Wuxtry Demos. this recording of some of their first tunes really cooks. Only Just A Touch survived and made it to an album. Drivin n Cryin covered Mystery To Me a few times to great effect. I really like that song. This is a repost of this show. My original post was transferred on a faulty turntable that was playing too fast. i know it's hard to tell with these early REM tapes but it WAS fast. I located a new digital source for this show and it's a better copy, anyway. Presented for historical and documentary purposes only. All rights remain with the copyright holder.
00:00 Dangerous Times
02:09 All The Right Friends
06:00 Different Girl
09:39 Narrator
12:25 Just A Touch
14:34 Baby
16:51 Mystery To Me
18:49 Permanent Vacation
Thank you for uploading.
My pleasure!
These 1980 demos are SO good. I sure wish the sound was better. Imagine if they had released this as an EP in 1980? Wow.
Yep....
The "All The Right Friends demo on "The IRS Years" release of Dead Letter Office is just as fantastic as this 1980 demo. But I absolutely love the energy and sheer passion in this demo recording. Stipe, in particular, is at his quirky, animated best here. But the whole band is just on fire. The harmony vocals with Stipe and Mills are amazingly polished for a first demo, too.
My vinyl LP of Dead Letter Office lacks that but at least I have this.
These songs are like if you crossed The Byrds with the speed and rawness of punk rock.
Thanks for posting this. I have a few early REM recordings, I love the energy of these songs. 1980 Athens must have been wild.
They were already one of the best bands ever when they recorded these early songs. Along with the B-52's, Athens was about to conquer the world!
thank you dave
I love how the songs were always a little different at each show back then... "Bodycount at Tyrone's" is probably my favorite R.E.M. record.
Yeah that bootleg knocked me out when I first heard it. - czcams.com/video/RLaqT1MycF4/video.html
@@oydave thats exactly what i was talking about. "bodycount at tyrones" and "so much younger then" have similar setlists but the songs have all evolved in the time between them. so cool.
In the first few years of the band touring they always ended their shows by playing "Permanent Vacation". It is a great show closer.
always enjoy your content
You got it man. Rock on!
Wow! I bought this on cassette in a record fair in Edinburgh in 1989! Loved it so much my first band even tried covering Narrator!
You picked a tough one!
I can hear The Jam in this early stuff.. not so much later
Actually several of these songs survived to appear on later REM releases. Besides, Just A Touch, Mystery To Me and All The Right Friends were included later on official REM releases. But, for me, every song on this demo is just as good as Just A Touch.
You are correct, sir! I can't say they're all as good as Mystery To Me or Just A Touch but they are fantastic. Check out the 1982-05-14 Piedmont Park show on my page. It's one of the first shows that I've heard to feature none of these early gems but rather the songs that would make up the imminent EP and LP.
Promise me this ain't A.I.
