  • The pride of Marietta GA., Guadalcanal Diary. I don't remember them from clubs, although they did play 688. I don't know where I was those nights. Anyway, they scored a record deal and, man, did they use the studio well. Beautiful sounding record, although the picture disc has more surface noise than a normal LP. Pretty, though. I got to visit the studio when they were making this excellent record and watched John Poe overdub a drum fill using the buttons of a drum machine. They were my favorite Atlanta band! I saw them many times at 688 and opened for them at the Moonshadow Saloon. They headlined the biggest show I ever played, along with Love Tractor and True Believers, at an outdoor stadium in Sewanee, TN. I was playing with Mr. Crowe's Garden and I remember that their bassist Rhett Crowe asked us "why did y'all name your band after my Dad's garden?"

Haha! My dad's garden. Yeah, wish I had some tape on these guys. Speaking of tape, I just got my Tascam 122 MK III back from the shop. Studio pro cassette deck with pitch control, among other things.

Nice! Pitch control is a must-have!

This deck cost 800 bucks 35 years ago! I inherited it from the ad agency I worked at, along with the similarly priced Pioneer turntable with the strobe. I'm not a musician, though, and I sold my sweet Ibanez long ago so the tuned guitar bit is out. I do have an ear....

That sounds amazing - I can see why you got it fixed! You could buy a set of tuning forks or a cheap digital keyboard to tune to. I have a pretty good ear but I don't have perfect pitch and I wouldn't be able to get my tapes perfectly in tune without some sort of reference...

I think she was correct about the name. Mr. Crowe's Garden started in Marietta and Guadalcanal Diary (the pride of Marietta) were already well-established by then. When asked where the name came from, Chris used to respond that they had met a girl at a party and she said they should call the band Mr. Crowe's Garden. If Rhett's Dad is Mr. Crowe and he had a garden, I think it's safe to say that the band was named after it. Which means that in a way, the Black Crowes are named after Rhett Crowe!

Thank you. I saw them I'm pretty sure in a little club in Emory Village across the street from Jaggers Pizza down a little. You have so many great atl bands from that era.

Those were the days, as they say!

      It was probably The Dugout.

I don't think so. I booked all the rock shows at the Dugout and I don't think I was able to book them. I did get Dreams So Real, and also Love Tractor (though they played under a fake name - Wheel of Cheese!). It might have been the Moonshadow, with Arms Akimbo opening!

I yield to your Dugout credentials....

@@Ted_Selke I could be wrong, but I know I saw some great bands at yes The Dugout. That was it. Loved Arms Akimbo too. maybe it was them and I saw there and QD somewhere else. We need an 80s Atl/Athens band reunion fest. That's what I love about your site Oydave, All the great memories although fuzzy as they may be now!
