The Borderland Line
This video looks at the revamped service on the Borderland line in north-east Wales. The previously very unreliable hourly service worked by Class 1590 dmus was replaced in June 2024 by a 40 minute interval service which eventiually will be entirley worked by diesel-battery units of the Class 230. Until sufficient are available two trains are operated by two-car CAF-built Clas 197/0s

    Yes, you are right about the GW fast charge batteries. Apparently the TfW units are due to receive upgraded batteries so we shall wait to see if they make a difference. It’s hard to know what other lines these diesel-battery units could work on. The Borderland line has no severe gradients to tax the batteries. I hope they won’t become expensive failures.

  • @MervynPartin
    @MervynPartin Před 6 dny

    It is a pity that the VivaRail D-stock conversions have not enjoyed more success. The best performance so far seems to be the GWR battery trains on the Greenford branch with the fast charge facilities, so this might be the way ahead with the Borderland Line. The GWR units have already shown that they have excellent range between charges. I believe that it is the diesel generators that are the cause of the reliability problems. The 197s were meant for other duties, so I'm sure that TfW will want to get something sorted soon with the 230s.

    Some lovely sweeping shots there.....I especially liked the views taken in the fields. I take it 'top and tails' is a requirement in case of breakdown rather than a feature of the line?

    • @GarethJonesPilipala
      @GarethJonesPilipala Před 2 měsíci

      The main reason for 'topping and tailing' the trains to Broadway was that it avoided time consuming running around for the locomotive. Having an engine at the rear of the train meant it could depart within about 5 minutes of arrival instead of the scheduled 15 minutes. This allowed any late running to be reduced.

Note that "Elch" (the large red diesel from the Furka) is not considered as a replacement for steam when we'll get to the end of the line, but only as a capable helper and work train engine. Looking at the relative cab heights between Nos.8, 12 an 4415, the Kerr Stuart diesel can't have fouled Garnedd Tunnel by much. Time to get someone up there with a bolster and lump hammer?

    • @GarethJonesPilipala
      @GarethJonesPilipala Před 10 měsíci

      I went through Garnedd Tunnel behind 4415 last year without any problem, so has the loco been reduced slightly in size? I think it would be a major job to lower the tunnel floor. A few inches was taken off the floor sometime towards the end of the 1960s so that the larger carriages being introduced would fit. The Chinese loco also just fits the tunnel and I assume JSII will fit.

    They are good trains, dependent on where you can sit. The engine car produces unpleasant sounds. I presume this will not be the case when the lines are electrified. I like the extending board that bridges the gap between carriage and platform, I like the clear screens that give information on which station the train is arriving at as, particularly at night, passengers cannot see the platform signs because of the bright interior lighting. I don't like the frequent audible announcements. I appreciate that people with impaired vision (I was virtually blind before recent surgery) need information but this should be reduced to station information either in Welsh or English but not both. Nobody is interested in the other safety information; we all know how to use trains. All in all I am positive regarding these trains and do enjoy my runs from Caerffili to Cardiff and back.
