Lava Burns House in Royal Gardens
Note: This video was originally posted in June of 2009.
The surface flow on the eastern part of Royal Gardens has now covered Paradise Street and is halfway down to Orchid Street. It destroyed a carport and attached room next to Paradise and the house next to Queen Street shown on this video. This house was first isolated by other lava flows in the 1980's and had been abandoned for a long time. It burned to the ground in a matter of minutes when a small stream of lava came into contact with it. The house was already in a weakened condition from dry rot and termite damage.

Kilauea Lava Burns Highway 130 January 5, 2011
zhlédnutí 22KPřed 13 lety
Lava breaks out from under the surface at the end of Highway 130 and quickly covers a large patch of asphalt. The asphalt was not able to burn quickly enough as it was being covered, so superheated jets of gas were ignited as they escaped through the hot lava. The lava had reached the end of Highway 130 two days before and had stalled and crusted over. But a surge in supply created enough press...

NOTE: Some relief has been brought to the residents of Kalapana with a pause in the eastward flow and better control of the people going through the residential areas. Several locked gates have been added with keys given to the residents and a security guard is now working extended hours to control entry into the area. I will be visiting the areas to the west of the residential areas and up the...
Kilauea Lava Flow July 19, 2010
zhlédnutí 53KPřed 13 lety
Lava continues to advance in an easterly direction mainly along a section of Highway 137. This is a broad flow that is poised to threaten a residential area in Kalapana. Included in this video are clips showing the advancement of lava along a portion of Highway 137 as well as a very fluid flow which breaks out from under the crust near the front of the flow. Kilauea Lava Flow July 14, 2010
zhlédnutí 13KPřed 13 lety
The new flow making its way to the ocean had reached the coastal plain and was only 0.8 miles from its destination. These clips show the destruction of a small vegetated area of small trees and underbrush. The encroaching lava was very fast and buried much of the vegetation before complete combustion had taken place. As a result, numerous jets of flaming gases can be seen breaking through the l...
Kilauea Lava Flow July 10, 2010
zhlédnutí 7KPřed 13 lety
The lava flow which broke out from the shields was well down to the base of Pulama Pali and only 1.5 miles from the ocean. This flow was tracking down the east side of the recent flow which had reached the ocean several months ago, but had stopped flowing when its supply was interrupted and was replaced by a new phase of shield building in the higher elevations. Kilauea Lava Flow June 16, 2010
zhlédnutí 10KPřed 14 lety
A major flow has broken out from the southern shields and headed in the direction of the northwest part of the Royal Gardens subdivision at about the 1600 elevation and four miles from the ocean. The flow on the eastern edge was composed of gas rich lava which forms a frothy crust known as shelly pahoehoe. This crust easily folds over itself as it is carried downstream and encapsulates gas pock...
Pu'u O'o Lava Lake June 6, 2010
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 14 lety
Pu'u O'o has been serving mainly as a chimney to vent the majority of gases from Kilauea for the last three years but has recently come back to life with a small lava lake inside the crater. The lake is about 1000 by 400 feet and more than 100 feet down from the rim. A thin layer of crust floats on the surface and is continuously being overturned and sunk by the swirling currents in the lake. N...
Kilauea a'a Shield Flow June 1, 2010
zhlédnutí 69KPřed 14 lety
Most of the flow from the TEB vent on the East Rift Zone is now in the higher elevations near a new shield being built over the main tube. This shield is at about the 1800 foot elevation and five miles from the ocean. A smaller amount of lava is still being carried downhill in smaller tubes and producing small surface flows on Pulama Pali and the coastal plain. Shields resemble small volcanoes ...
Kilauea Skylight and Lava Breakout May 11 & 13, 2010

The tube system delivering lava from Kilauea's East Rift Zone is still developing from the top of Pulama Pali to the Pacific Ocean. There are at least two shallow tubes on the slopes of the pali and coastal plain as well as numerous sub-surface and surface flows. The first clip in this video shows a skylight on one of the shallow tubes. The rest of the video shows a surge of lava which broke ou...

zhlédnutí 35KPřed 14 lety
Lava from Kilauea has finally reached the Pacific Ocean after traveling about eight miles from the TEB vent on the East Rift Zone. Lava had not been reaching the ocean since the start of the year. The ocean entry is located outside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in the Kalapana area near the end of Highway 130. Recorded April 30, 2010
kilauea Lava Flow April 29, 2010
zhlédnutí 12KPřed 14 lety
The surface flows nearing the ocean continue to gain strength due to an increase in the supply of lava from the source on the East Rift Zone of Kilauea. On this date in the early morning it advanced to within 250 feet of the ocean and may reach it within hours if the supply is not interrupted. The first three clips in this video show a flow of lava break out from the developing tube about 1/4 m...

If you stand in the water near it I wonder how warm it gets as it retracts. Tolerable or way too hot for skin?
It's a shame that no one uses that molten lava to mold bricks with.
Outer layers of hardened lava are often used for building rock walls here in Hawaii. Most early traditional homes/buildings were built with these same lava rocks. Some still exist as historical buildings. Mostly churches. Making bricks from molten lava, good luck.
Even after eruption, the lava's still flowing. It's incredible. For once, I wish some precipitation would cool it down.
Nature is a great abstract artist.

@volcanochaser I have a question if there was a flow of ropy try lava (Pahoehoe) going along the top would it flow straight into the skylight and join up with the flow?
@volcanochaser I have a question @1:51 is this ropy try lava flow going into a underground lava tube to join up with the quick A’a flow underground going to the ocean?
Honestly @volcanochaser this is my favourite type of lava because of the ropy texture it gets from the slow movement. Also @0:19 that orange bit means there’s a active slow moving flow under the ropy try lava
@volcanochaser I’ve been to this place in Hawaii

Hi Bryan: We met about the time of this clip or a little later. I traded my gps to your friend lavageezer for his gas mask because of wind conditions that day. I arrive back to your tent about sunset where you convinced me to go back up for the night with you because it was erupting about every night. I remember while we were talking the top of one of the two spatter cone blew off, I think this cone here was one of them except it was taller but it had the same hole in the side of it. I had spent the night observing a flow go into the ocean, & spent another day climbing into several dormant spatter cones in the middle of Kilauea Caldera (perhaps gone now) on previous trips but by far the night on Pu’u O’o was tops for me. I still prize the pic you took of me walking across the side of it with a telephoto lens. I don’t recall the exact year but my wife loves telling others of the particular day, I had called her from the top about 11:00 back at my friends place in Volcano Village telling her of my plan to stay longer than planned (they were sure I was going to die) so she says ‘’oh by the way, happy Valentine’s Day honey’’

You have some of the best footage of Kilauea's Pu'u O'o eruption! I remember hiking out there numerous times to see the lava. Missed it. Now it is confined to the caldera.
Nice footage!
sounds like the Earth is breathing~~~
Water has surprisingly little effect on molten lava.
Are we talking 13 years ago????? Get rid of it.
