- A vigorous surface flow continues to advance through Royal Gardens at about the 1000 foot elevation and its front was approaching Plumeria between Alii and Hoku. This flow was mostly over an older flow which originally had covered this section of Warrior but was also burning some trees on the western margin of the flow.

Although fast by Kilauea standards, we are still talking feet per hour instead of miles per hour. Individual streams may be faster for short lengths when it narrows down in certain spots, but they will slow down when they reach a flat area and spread out. This video shows the same stream when it is narrow and when it widens. It was reported this morning (Feb 3) that it had reached the base of the hill about one mile away. So it traveled about one mile over a very steep hillside in 2-3 days.
Wow, this flow is much faster than the one closing the road a few days ago. It looks specially dangerous at the end, when you are recording downslope and the flow advances in your direction! Thanks for your amazing footage.
Very spectacular. 2:27 WOW !
Viewing lava in Kilauea is relatively safe most of the time because the intense radiant heat keeps you at a safe distance and the lava flows are slow except in steep slopes. Even with just the area around my eyes exposed, I could only be this close for a few seconds before retreating.
Thanks, no organization is affiliated with me.
2:33 How did you get so close? I'd be in some sort of mass panic. Wow.
