      Part of the game unfortunately mate. I keep doing the same tbh. Main things I would say are striking quickly while the fish is still moving away so that you pull the hooks into the corner of the mouth and make sure that you are using sharp hooks. Other than that it’s just luck mate.

    G I’m not convinced of your theory of water temperatures. Lochs, in winter, have the warmest water at the deepest parts (4*C). That’s why ice forms on the surface. Pike settle in these deep waters because the temp. Is stable. Winter sunshine isn’t going to heat the surface of the water enough in a day to make a difference. A phenomenon called turnaround where denser colder water sinks aerates the loch in the winter. In the summer turnaround doesn’t happen as much so the lower depths don’t have as much oxygen. I reckon your success at the mouth of the stream is more likely to be the food chain. Food for smaller fish is being washed down the burn so they congregate there. Where there’s bait fish there is predators. When spring arrives everything thaws out and surface water temperatures rise………..the bottom of the loch is still 4*C. Only in the height of and late summer will the bottom of a loch rise above this………deeper lochs are very unlikely to change as it is so deep. Even if a shallow loch was to freeze over it would be highly unlikely that the bottom layer freeze.

    Great video G. Time consuming but well worth it. Easy access to that loch. I fished exactly where you set up and was plagued with eels. I suspect that’s what took the lamprey at the end. I had a mackerel stripped to the bones on one trip and an eel wrapped round my trace that took 20 minutes to get free. Keep the videos coming.

      Yeah they’re a pest mate. That’s why I use lamprey and eel now. That last one was definitely a decent pike as there’s were teeth marks along 6”s of the bait but been pestered by them before.

I cringe when i see people playing a fish and they a constantly moving their drag, how do they know how tight they have tightened it.

    Sorry, but I was cringing watching the unhooking. 'A quick tug, and the hooks will come easily' you say. You sped the video up in places because it took so long. One time you were hung up in the landing net. Your main problem is trebles hooks. Singles would come out easier and the video would look far better. It's also better to unhook a pike with it laying on it's side. Holding it up will only induce the pike to thrash about more as shown. And no one in their right mind would hold a trace in their mouth to keep it taught when there's a possibility of the pike having a thrash about. Sorry, but it didn't look easy for newcomers to the sport at all.

    • @thescottishpiker2010
      @thescottishpiker2010 Před 5 měsíci

      Firstly thank you for you for your comment. When I sped up the clip that’s is correct as yes it did take a while to find the correct angle but once I did they came out easily which was my point. Rather take your time than yank hooks out causing damage and by having the fish in the water you give yourself more time. As a beginner I think keeping the fish in the water it is far safer as if you do drop the fish or it wriggles free then it won’t be damaged. It is also far less likely to get caught up in the net despite what you say as long as you have a deep landing net. If you listened to the video you would here that I say that holding the trace in your mouth is a last resort if you are on your own. Do you suggest leaving hooks in the fish instead? Because that is the only way of pulling the hooks out of the fishes stomach in the worst case scenario.

      Hi, pike fishing has to be the most difficult of all angling, and we all have different ideas on how best to deal with the catch. I'd never leave hooks in. As I use singles, if it happens to gut hook, it really is a piece of p*ss to get them out. Any type of unhooking, scissors, wherever. When alone, you can use tension of your rod and line. Lay the rod parallel with the pike in front of you with the reel in reach. Use 2 tent/brollie or banksticks, one behind the reel where it meets the rod, another on the opposite side near the butt end. This should hold the rod in place. Tighten line with reel, then slide pike backwards on the mat to get the desired tension. Using a mat makes life a lot easier. With care you can lift a gill cover as it lays there and get to the hook/s with forceps through the gaps in the gills. It's like doing surgery, but I've found that it's the best way. Holding a pike up by the gills is not good practice anyway, yet everyone does it because they think it's what you do with pike. If you do have to do it your way, I'd suggest looping an elastic band around the trace real tight and hold that in your mouth if you want to keep your teeth in one piece. We know these pike can flick their head in a flash. Better safe than sorry. Still at the end of the day, we're all trying to help each other for the best of the pike. Good luck with your piking ... and ... try at least one rod on singles. You may be surprised. Tight lines.
