can i ask a stupid question ? why not use the VSR to switch power to the house when the start battery is charged rather than charge 2 at the same time ??
Hi LisaF, Thanks for watching. They are no stupid question ;) Some people prefer the old way, switch over the VRS, It’s a personal preference. I do have also the video for VSR check it out :) czcams.com/video/7TinRz-H76k/video.htmlsi=8Q91PiH1c2Fw7lI2
It seems like the point where your idle speed control cable is preloadong where the swing arm bottoms out. Would you recommend this or just adjusting idle screw to preload
Hi WarpTide, thanks for watching. They were more adjustment needed on the Idle speed control. But this video was just to adjust the idle screw 😊
Thanks for this video, I'm late finding it. I have a broken upper locking pin lever, that I'm going to try and replace. I wasn't sure what all I had to remove.
Ok so the yellow wire is direct to the battery and no fuse, does that drain the battery?
Hi anghiggy, Thanks for watching. Unless your radio requires a fuse on yellow then you can put a fuse. The yellow wire is the one that will keep all your setting in the radio like your favorite radio stations and what ever can be saved. So yes, with an extreme long time it will drain your battery (we are talking months here). You if have a battery draining problem this would not be my first suspicion. Hope this helps :)
@@joetheboatguy5394 OK. Thanks, it was only a week, we thought it was a little strange, but it is the only thing we have changed. The battery stayed up all winter. Installed new radio to existing wires except this one had the yellow wire where the old one only had the red fused.
Make sure all your connections are good if one wire does not have good connection. It can creates resistance which more amperage passes, which makes the battery work more. If you really suspect that wire, you can unplug it and see if the battery keeps up for a week.
@@joetheboatguy5394 I so appreciate you conversing with me. That is my plan is just to disconnect the yellow wire, we don't really need the memory. But yes, all my connections are good. I left one thing out on my last comment. On the video I watched to help me change out the radio it said to tie the yellow wire in with the red wire. You show them connected separately. Do you think that can make the difference? I've seen a few things since the battery got drained that said not to twist them together. Your help is much appreciated!!
yes, the yellow and the red both come from the batterie. The difference is, on the red wire there’s a switch so basically you connected the red wire on a wire that ONLY has power when the key is turned. So, radio shouldn’t go ON if the ignition key in not turned on. So red wire should have 0V if key is not turned (OFF position) and 12V if key is turned.
I did all this and still no power to the radio
Hi AtwoodBoxing, thanks for watching. Do you have a multimeter to measure the voltage between the red and the black wire of course after the fuse make sure there’s 12 V.. If there’s no 12 V, make sure your fuses is good and that you’re grounded correctly. Start with that and let me know 👍
@joetheboatguy5394 yup I did all of that and still don't turn on and I tried 2 different radios
What is the model of your radio? I will look it up..
@@joetheboatguy5394 dual dc426bt
Ok found your unit. You need to make sure you have 12v at the yellow after the fuse and red wire. What is your power source? A battery? Also when measuring your voltage, make sure you’re using your radio ground (black wire).
Thank you for the video! Just one question. There are so many different bus bars online, what amperage does it need to be in order to have both batteries and the motor grounding to it?
hi baileyschornak, thanks for watching and comment, Bus bars are usually high on amperage (200A). It all depends on what you are plugging on the bus bar. But if you get a 200A one, I'm pretty sure you will be fine :)
So my boat is exactly like your video. My boat has a 3 male 1 female attachment. All the videos I have seen are the opposite and 3 female 1 male adapter. Does this matter? My truck was built to fit with this setup you've shown.
Hi Erik-Veedee-Veechee, thanks for watching. If you get your hitch installed from a dealer this is the way they would have it. Some people prefer the other way but doesn’t change anything in the wiring. :)
Yeah I was confused. Thank you. So with the one brown wire can you run it down one side and then just connect from the side marker down to the left light or how do you make 1 wire run both ways?
Yes your brown wire will go to all your marker lights. You can split the wire with connectors splitters or the old fashion way splice the wire directly. 👍
Will the brown wire make the side of the light fixture light up in the back? I have the big round part light up but not the side of the square. I haven't put the marker lights on yet. Also does it matter if it's grounded on each light AND I'm running the white trailer tounge ground?
The brown wire will receive 12 V as soon as you turn your car lights on. Whatever lights you want ON that’s the wire it needs. So side markers backlights will have the brown wire. For the ground, you can use the trailer chassis for ground or the better way is to pass the white wired to all your lights for ground.
Very simple. Thank you!
forgot battery on/off switch
Hi ultimatejay, thanks for watching. Adding an on/off switch is an option, but it will only lead to human mistakes. In the event that you turn off your switch and plug in your charger, your batteries may not be charged the following time you want to go out. So, adding a switch on batteries can be a double edged knife.
Joe what about if the house battery is empty and the starter battery almost full?
Hi ioannisvarkoulis. In this diagram the starter battery is primary. But as soon as your voltage is higher than 12.8v your house battery will get charged also. The VSR is there to make sure your equipment doesn’t use your starter battery. 👍
So i could change the VSR connection from solar charging and make the house battery prime. The starter battery will be charged from engine anyway Is that so?
But your solar panel will charge the house battery if your starting battery is full. your solar will charge both batteries but the starter battery first. Why would you want your house battery to be primary?
@@joetheboatguy5394 I’m afraid that when the starter battery is full the solar charger will stop charging and the house battery will not reach the same status as the starter battery.
Your solar charger controller should have a cut out voltage higher then 12.8V. So both your batteries should be full before it cuts out.
Thanks for the video.I have a minn kota on my boat connected to my house battery.I used your diagram plus I have also a Victron charger 220v to 12v and a solar panel with regulator connected to starter battery. My concern is if all that will work without any problem. So starting the engine will disengage the rest?
Hi ioannisvarkoulis, Thanks for watching, if you have a single VSR it should work exactly like the diagram. when your engine is on if you have a voltage rectifier or alternator it will charge both your batteries since your voltage will be higher then 12.8 and VSR will let the voltage pass.
hi, what would be the best place fro a kill switch in this schema?

Hello Joe, I am writing from Turkey. I have the same engine. After the first operation, I cannot start it again for a long time. I was worried about going on a long road, but last time it stopped suddenly. In short, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Hello erdoganordukaya, thanks for watching. A no start can be many things. First check if your spark plugs are good then check if they get a good spark on start. Bad spark will cause hard start. When it starts does your engine run rough? If it’s really rough, it could be because your reed valve are damaged. They are other things to check first. If you have a hard time starting it, always pull to prime button and put it back in place before starting. It will shoot a little spray of fuel to help it start. Also make sure your fuel bulb is pumped hard. That can only help the start of your engine. If your carburetor is gunk up, running some Seafoam into it to clean it. When running, is your idol good? Your idle screw might need a little adjustment. Also, you might need to adjust your air fuel mixture screw, but that’s one of the last things to do. Let me know and good luck 👍
@@joetheboatguy5394 Thank you very much for taking the time to provide me with the information. Can you give me an e-mail or phone number so that I can send you a video?

I have a remote blue wire from the amp went to know when I’m in the back of the radio harness do I do the other blue wire or the power antenna wire or splice it some where else ?
In your radio harnessed, you should have a blue wire that only has 12 V on it when you turn on the radio that’s the one you connect on the blue wire or the amp. 👍

I try doing this none of the lights turned on but when i hoop it up the the yukon the light turn on what do you think was the promblem
Hi juniorsandoval, thanks for watching. The first thing I would check is the ground. Maybe your ground is not connected well. Are you sure your battery is good? If your batteries weak chances are not gonna get any lights going on. That is the two things I would check. Let me know. 👍

Great video, I have a three battery three perko switch set up, 2 cranking batteries and one house battery. My house battery loses charge fast if a forget to turn my switch to the all mark. I want to charge my house battery while I'm out on the water and not rely on my twin engines alternator to charge my house battery.
Very clear and simply explained!! Well done and THANK YOU!!
You're confusing me with choke open and closed, I believe you have it backwards.
Hi Kenhart, thanks for watching, when I say open choke mean it let more air in. Closed choke will let less air in. Hope this helps :)
Can you wire one of the switches to be a master power switch?
hi CaptainCal, thanks for watching. Yes, you can set a master power switch but it comes with some dangers. You got to make sure the master switch can transfer the amps needed if all your switches are ON. Also, your gauge wire size needs to be right. So basically, if you want a master switch, lets take for example the first switch connected on the water pump. So, the wire 8 will go to the other switches to pin 2. So, this becomes your main power to your other switches. If you turn OFF switch 1 the rest will turn OFF also.
@@joetheboatguy5394 thanks for the response! So I take the number 8 wire and wire it to all of the other switches pin 2?
Yes so your first switch will turn all other switches on. Without that switch being on the rest will be off. But like I said be careful that your main switch is capable to pass all amperage needed by other switches.
Nice video
Thank you good 👍🏼 jobs
If the tail-lights are LEDs the connections are "unidirectional"... so where does the brown wire go, and where do the green and yellow wires go? Or just try both ways and pick the one that works?
Hi eddiebelzebuth, Thanks for watching, you just have to remove the old lights, match the wires and mount the new ones. Please note, it’s not a good idea to mix LEDs and incandescent lights, so if you have have side markers or other lights on the trailer, make sure you switch those to LEDs as well. Wire shouldn’t change. 👍
What about wiring a trim gauge.I have a mariner 60 efi 2024 four stroke and bought the gauge but not sure how to wire up Can you help with this Regards Andy
hello User-fw1ry7mg9v, Thanks for watching, usually the trim wire go as fallowed. Red wire for power (+12V) with fuse, Bleu wire goes to the negative of the batterie, Black goes to your Sensor signal on your trim, Orange is for gauge light, so you can put (+12 v with a switch if you want to turn on and off). Let me know if this help :)

I do have a video on wire sizing but don’t know if that’s what your looking for czcams.com/video/c_9MxEdlRuA/video.htmlsi=2ynd4gJvpi54U4Rf Let me know if this helps. For the fuse, all equipment you have usually have a fuse specification.
I have the same motor, but everyday when I leave it overnight the next day it will only start with Carb cleaner and after the first start it would start after each shutdown without the need of a carb cleaner. Its only when the engine sits overnight. Any idea why?
Hi Hamond, thank you for watching. Are you running the right spark plugs? I know that sound elementary but it can affect cold starts especially. Check your spark plug cable make sure no cracks on them. Also check spark plugs make sure they are healthy. Another thing but rarely the problem, fuel filter make sure it’s changed. If you pull the “pull to prime” button it should help to start your engine when cold. It sprays a little fuel to help it start. Last thing to check would be your reeds but that’s an easy check. Let us know how it goes 👍
Thank you. This actually helped a lot.

Perfect, very comprehensive, thanks bro!
Hey Joe. Hope you've been well. So my son took my boat out other day. At end of day got caught in big storm. Motor, gas tank etc sat in 20+ minutes of downpour. I didnt think abytning of it as next day took my dad and friend out. Imnediatley noticed im only getting 50-60 percent top speed with throttle fully down. Also, as we ran motor longer and longee it started sputtering. Eventually made a popping sound, then smoke came out. Tried starting it and would try, but couldn't turn over. Gave it some time then finally started. Got to launch where it quit 100' away as it made the popping sound again and wouldn't turn over. Used trolling motor to get back. I realized half way through all that that the little valve on gas tank cap had been open the whole time the day before during big storm and gas tank must have taken on a ton of water. Tank when home last night was at half. I filled it up, with pre mixed gas/oil figuring it would help minimize the ratio of water to gas/oil. Also added some sea foam. Just curiois if you think water in gas tank causes a motor to run at half speed?? And i hope there's no permanent damage. Like could it be a coincidence of the storm, and now motor runnjng half speed? *** im only assuming that water got into the gas tank. Maybe only a little bit got in. But I'm not sure what else could be a reason for a motor to run at half speed the next day after a huge storm. The motor and gas tank got rained on for about 20 minutes pretty heavily. Anyways, I'm hoping to take the boat out in a couple days and I hope I didn't ruin it thank you so much if you have any input
Hey Mike, Ohhhh water in the gas tank is not so good. But it happens. The problem with water in your gas tank. Water does not burn like gasoline, and when it enters the combustion chamber, it can prevent the gas from igniting properly, leading to misfires, rough idling, and overall poor engine performance. All problems you described. Long-Term Issues with Water in Your Gas Tank Water can cause corrosion inside your fuel system and spark plugs keep them from monitoring your fuel delivery rate properly. I would start with spark plugs removed as to completely clean the fuel system. Let dry when completely clean. Put sparkplugs back and retry. usually works. Let me know!
Any luck Mike?
@joetheboatguy5394 so sorry for delay. I ended up putting some K100 I think the marina called it, a stabilizer which burned up excess water in tank and motor, and it ran like a charm a day later! Ran great a couple days after that as well. Then out of nowhere yesterday morning, with tons of boats in the launch, it wouldn't turn over. Was so embarrassing. Tried many times then saw smoke out back of motor. Frustrated, we pushed boat off to side because my truck was already long parked and 2 boats behind me waiting. Finally got it started but I had to start it and move throttle up as fast as possible or it would die a second later. Like It would stall out thr moment it started and in idle. Anyways, got it running and once I did, it started and stayed idle no problem after that. So I 'think' it's OK but we shall see in future usage.
@joetheboatguy5394 question for you. Do you have a donation link? I have a lot of expenses at the moment but wanted to see if I could send a small donation to thank you for your time with me lately!
Hey Mike, thank you but no donation I’m just here to help if I can. I’m just glad your outboard is running good. It’s hard to kill a mercury lol
Dumb question here. So, should i splice ignition wire and attach red speaker wire to it?
Hi chaoticcountryhomest, thank for watching, no you never connect any direct “12v” current to a speaker. Did you mean amplifier instead of speaker? Let me know 👍
@joetheboatguy5394 you are video states that red 12v is 'usually connected to ignition'. I guess I'm confused by that. I'm trying to hook up a boat radio. I can see how yellow is attached but red is throwing me off.
Ok I think I just got what you were saying , i got confused when you said red speaker wire. The yellow wire is connected straight to the + of the battery and the red is connected on a 12v that is only on when you turn your key like a car.let me know if this helps 👍
@joetheboatguy5394 . I do not have a orange. Can I splice red and yellow together and connect them to terminal block under boat helm? Will this drain battery even when it is turned off? Thanks
Hello, No it shouldn’t drain the battery but if you leave your radio on and turn your ignition off your radio will still stay on then it will drain the battery. But if you turn you radio off manually then your fine. Sorry for the delay I was gone fishing 🎣
Not that I see it on paper, I think I will try this because it stops alot of the going from side to side!
Great! But, don't you need a carbon pile load tester for 15 seconds with deep cycle batteries?
Hi olpreach, thanks for watching, This load tester is compatible with deep cycle batteries, and it can check the cells operating at 6 to 12 volts with 1000 CCA. The tester will display the battery condition within 10 seconds. The needle should remain in the green area. If it doesn’t, the battery is weak or bad.
I'll try to remember that without the trailer the boat doesnt go anywhere duh. Thank you for showing how to test the 4 wire port connection.
You’re going to be real embarrassed if you forget and you show up at the lake with your boat, but no trailer.
Awesome video

@@joetheboatguy5394 Good vids. I should have asked, How to identify existing components, then isolate them to the house battery. I'm trying to add a second battery to my boat. The issue is, my boat came wired without a GPS/Fish finder or a radio. My current set up only has a circuit breaker in the bilge area. And I want to add a second battery to run all the accessories and keep the current battery to just crank the engine. Thanks again.
Oh that would be a little hard to answer since I never saw your set up. Is you set up man made or is it from the manufacture? If it’s from manufacturer, then you would be able to find the wiring diagram for your boat. If it’s man-made then you would have to follow the wires to figure out what’s going on. Fuse box is always a good place to start Keep us posted 👍
@@joetheboatguy5394 It's a factory job from Tidewater. I found it online. Thanks for the reply. One last question. I see my boat is only equipped with a circuit breaker in the bilge area. Can I use a negative buss bar and fuse box instead of the circuit breaker? I plan to add a second battery for the Garmin and Boss Audio Radio. Thoughts?
I usually use the circuit breaker to protect the whole system. So, the circuit breaker would be between the batteries and fuse box. The fuse box is used to protect a part of your circuit or a specific equipment. That how it usually done. So having both is a great Idea. Hope this helps :)
the only time a ground wire goes to each light is if it is LED,,the frame is otherwise the ground.
Hi Kevindendy, thanks for watching, I use the frame as ground but not everyone likes doing that. Even on vehicles the frames are usually ground. 👍
