Florante Aguilar
Registrace 31. 10. 2006
Florante Aguilar is one of the most active figures in Philippine traditional music today. His arrangements and compositions reveal a deep understanding of the form, successfully crafting the right balance between respect and redefinition of a tradition.
His constant search for a tradition-based contemporary Filipino sound led him to champion harana music - songs used in the now-vanished Filipino courtship ritual of serenading. Aguilar's compositions, which use strong Philippine motifs in a modern context, include works for guitar, octavina, violincello, percussion, as well as song cycles and a zarzuela.

Part 2 - Ilocano Harana (Ta Nagsaway A Pintas Mo)
Felipe Alonzo (1934-2013) recorded a remarkable all-Ilocano harana album, Kenka Biagko, for Villar Records in 1965. Accompanied by Leopoldo Silos and his rondalla, this album is a treasure trove of poignant and beautifully sung melodies that many Filipinos outside the Ilocos region have yet to discover. Sadly, Kenka Biagko is no longer in circulation. I was fortunate enough to listen to it, thanks to an Instagram follower who found a second-hand printed album online.
This footage was taken in 2008, during my first encounter with Mang Felipe on the streets of Vigan, Ilocos Sur. While staying at a local hotel, I asked a worker named Aling Aning if she knew of any singers who still practiced old harana songs. “I know someone! He drives a tricycle in the streets of Vigan,” she replied.
Initially, I thought it can’t be that easy. Encouraged by producer Fides Enriquez (now my wife) to pursue the lead, I went to the street corner (sa kanto) with our film crew, and waited for this supposedly legendary singer to roll in on his tricycle. The rest is history (watch the documentary via the link below).
Featuring the charming old town of Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

Part 1 - Sarswela (Bayan Ko in Ilocano) by Felipe Alonzo
zhlédnutí 2,2KPřed měsícem
Many of us recognize "Bayan Ko" as a powerful patriotic anthem, but its origins trace back to a 1902 sarswela, "Walang Sugat" (Woundless) by Severino Reyes whose pen name was Lola Basyang. Kundiman in form and originally written in Spanish, it was translated into the Tagalog version we know today by Jose Corazon de Jesus, also known as Huseng Batute, in 1929. Stay tuned after the song for my in...

“Who is our inspiration? Isn't it those whom we pine for? If you're not pining for someone, life is meaningless.” - Celestino Aniel (Harana Kings) Spoken like a true haranista, we celebrate Celestino Aniel’s birthday (May 19, 1946). He would have been 78. Great to re-live these moments (Dec. 2008), hearing these songs for the first time and learning them. Excerpts from the songs O Pagibig na Ma...

A little tribute to the Boholano side of my roots. Not only is the island province beautiful (a designated UNESCO Global Geopark) but its respect for the arts and traditional music speaks to me. Hope to be back soon ! Ang Bol-anon is a popular tune written by Regino Dano that I've arranged for the classical guitar. Enjoy!

The Gumamela Project - Musical Connections Between the Philippines and Mexico

Introducing the Gumamela project! My new project celebrating musical connections between the Philippines and Mexico. Yes, we definitely have a lot in common musically. Our harana music for example, sounds eerily similar to old Mexican songs in melodic style, rhythmic patterns and vocal inflections. But it doesn’t stop there. Traditional dances and religious music also reflect shared cultural va...

What if we wrote a harana song today? What would it sound like? What if we use contemporary harmonies and chord progressions they didn’t use back in the days? And why not play around the traditional habanera rhythm? Will it still be a harana song? And what if it were sung by women instead of men? Naghihintay is a song I wrote with these questions in mind. Featuring Charmaine Clamor and Arwen La...

Being a classical guitarist, I honestly didn’t know what to play on a steel string. But when the leader of Loboc Children's Choir asks you to play, you play. So glad I did. When the choir started singing along, the result was magic. Thank you for this expereince Ma'am Alma Taldo and Kuya Lutgardo Luza Labad.

So happy to see rondalla is alive and well in Bohol. Rondalla was my introduction to music growing up in Kawit, Cavite. I was nine years old and the octavina was my very first instrument. As a child, rondalla is a wonderful introduction to the joy of music, the feel of an instrument, ensemble playing, not to mention keeping the Filipino music tradition alive. Dimiao is a coastal town whose welc...
